  • Ditzy socialite with a heart of gold, Irene Bullock (Carole Lombard) finds "forgotten man" Godfrey Smith (William Powell) in a scavenger hunt. Eventually Godfrey is taken in as the family butler for the Bullocks and screwball antics and romance ensue.

He's so fantastic--I love him in every movie he's in--he not only adds his trademark wit (which is such a pleasure) but nearly always a rare humanity. I look at the best things of civilization and William Powell's name is always on that beautiful gold standard of the 'best of us'.

A classic--so enjoyable and witty--and with a keen social message that still resonates. Lombard is her usual divine ditzy self, Powell---he delivers with pleasurable wit, as expected, but is also touching here as the washed up man. He should have gotten a Oscar nod.

This is one of my favorite movies! My mom and I watch this every Chirstmas along with Bringing Up Baby. We just sit back and crack up at the crazy people. This movie is the bomb--seriously. LOL. We laugh @ Carlo's antics and that ol' mother the most.

Thank you for posting one of my all time favorite films of the 1930's. A true gem of that glamorous, elegant era. Carole Lombard, Gail Patrick, Alice Brady and William Powell were a force to be reckoned with. Few had as much talent and beauty as those.

It seems like as I was growing up, my network channel would put this on around the Holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas. It has a classic, black tie and tail feel about it. It is so romantic and the chemistry is fantastic between Ms. Lombard and Mr. Mr. Powell. Irene is hilarious against her sister Cordelia. It's just a hilarious movie. I miss it coming on television these days!

Another version of this movie is 1938's Merrily We Live is just as hilarious. Laugh out loud funny. Watched it last night on Turner Classic Movies, & I was howling! You said more than a mouthful, I totally agree; and that is my main reason for looking for movies and TV programs on the Internet so that I can pick and choose decent videos to watch. I kicked cable/satellite to the curb a few years and I don't miss it at all. LOTS of channels, but not enough decent shows (for my personal liking) to warrant my paying their high fees to watch junk!

I'm a huge fan of William Powell, especially the Thin Man films. I think I saw this once, on late night television some forty years ago, but I don't recall the movie. Fifteen minutes in at this point, and I can see why people call this movie a classic: Powell is wry and knowing, as always, and Lombard is delightful.

    • @waynes866
      @waynes866 5 лет назад

Okay. Having gone to the end, I'm pretty sure I've never seen this, not even in my teens. It's a charming film, to be sure, and one can see why Powell insisted on Lombard for the role of Irene: she nails it.

I agree with you and Rentaghost76, and I did the same re getting rid of cable/satellite. I love watching movies from the 30s & 40s. They made sense, they were decent and more of them are being seen as "classics" which is great.

Carole Lombard and William Powell were actually married but divorced three years before they made this film. Powell refused to take the role of Godfrey unless they got Carole Lombard for Irene. The year they filmed this, Lombard became romantically involved with future husband Clark Gable while Powell dated Jean Harlow. Of all this, Lombard and Powell were the best of friends. Now THAT'S what I call remaining in good terms!

This may be my fave screwball comedy of all time. Right up there with "Bringing Up Baby". Carol Landis was sexy, funny and endearing in this role. William Powell was a perfect foil for her antics. The character actors were among the best Hollywood had to offer in the late 30's. It's a shame that Carol died in a plane wreck a couple of years later. I do love this movie...

Meryl Leech and Goldie Hawn. The did a movie with Bruce Willis called Death Becomes Her. Bruce Willis is Meryl Leech's husband and Goldie Hawn's ex fiancee and he plays the biggest nerd you ever saw. Bruce Willis made this movie in between Die Hard and Pulp Fiction and it shows you the range that he has.

Carole was a kindly and dejightful person, a humanitarian and a member of the Baha'i Faith. She wrote Abdu’l-Baha, one of the Cental Figures of the Faith, and told of her love for Him and longing to be a successful actress. She said, “If only He approves, I shall not fail.” Abdu’l-Baha’s reply made Carole deliriously happy: he promised to pray for her to be an actress, and a successful one. Sure of success, she began her career.

It was also 1936 and obviously very "old-time" and old fashioned, when women and even men were expected act proper in all public forums. Men probably cussed and joked amongst themselves when they knew women weren't around, and probably the same with women. But not in public....

Carole Lombard was absolutely brilliant, whether it was comedy or drama. In fact, she would have been a brilliant foil for Bill Powell in the " Thin Man " films ( in a different, but not better way than the superb Myrna Loy of course )

  • @jimbronaugh

Jean Dixon (Molly) had so much screen presence that even Carol Lombard faded in the scenes they shared. She was a very successful stage actress who did few movies and it is a shame. I thought the writers stole a lot of Carole Lombard's strength from her by not giving her the chance a the 'close up' which where she, alone on the screen could shine. The frantic main shot kind of left her blended with the scenery.

From 1:00:20 to 1:01:10 is one of the great scenes in all cinema. William Powell is slightly tipsy (but still maintains his dignity, of course) and clicks his heels in an almost comic manner but the swells don't even notice. It's just the butler being the butler as far as they're concerned. The scene is great because it's so under-played yet the comedy still comes through.

William Powell had an innate dignity that was no affectation. Listen to him talk to the swells from 2:40 to 6:30. He might be a "forgotten man" living in a Hooverville but he never conforms to the idea that he is somehow beneath the rich. In his mind those nabobs are NOT superior to him as human beings. He's as good as they are.

I agree in respect to that in this golden era, they were truly STARS and enduring. But there are a few who can do that and have lasted like Sandra Bullock who can still get young leading men and is not being press ganged into playing mums. Jennifer Aniston has transcended well into movies. The younger ones coming up are Mila Kunis, Katherine Heigl, Emma Stone and Anne Hathaway. But that's only my opinion :)

In response to lordalesson's question: Possibly Coutney Cox & Teri Hatcher may be able to pull it off. Great movie. I adore the classics even though I'm not of that generation. Would have loved to be a movie director or script writer for the classic movie era. Very very very few movies of this generation measure up to the classics. Makes one really disheartened. Oh & maybe Sandra Bullock. Judith Light is still Looking gorgeous. And I Believe Pam Dawber could pull it off come to think of it.

Though Lombard is a hard act to follow, even then,Sandra Bullock is a good and easy choice
!- William Powell's part would actually be more difficult to cast!
Who could play Godfrey with that degree of charm and charisma these days??
The only one I can think of, off the top of my head, would be Hugh Grant, but even he would play it different
