Had the same issue recently just helping out a friend of a friend but don’t usually do work for people i don’t know for this reason, diagnosed 2017 mokka head gasket failure, spent time picking car up, roadtest, pressure test, sniffer test, compression test etc, gave quote which wasn’t a crazy price imo to remove head skim pressure test etc, then get a message saying taking it somewhere else for repair and not even an offer of paying me for my time for diagnosis. If i had been given the job i wasn’t to bothered about diag fee as i seen it as helping someone out but realised again why i dont like dealing with strangers. Don’t do anything for free now. sorry you got stiffed on that diagnostic. some people expect everything for nothing. As you rightly say any self employed tradesman is worth his wages. did the other mechanic actually diagnose or just go on your diagnostic ? you are so right about main dealers, I needed a new part coding to the car and it was a fortnight wait for an appointment slot. Keep up the good work !
I feel ya man! You and other skilled trades people, shouldn't need to be explaining why your time isn't free. I'd suggest you create a e-sign document that you can email/msg your clients, that dictates that they agree to pay for the basics at least: Call out & diagnosis. Most e-sign documents are 1-click PDFs, meaning you have uneditable proof of a agreeable contract. Uneditable by yourself and the client, which prevents questions like 'You must have changed the price after signing' etc.
That’s a very good idea, I’ve never taken deposits etc as 99% of customers keep their appointment times and also pay straight away etc it’s just a shame there a few out there with no morals
@@kerbsidemobilemechanic Always the way pal - that few that ruin it. Most people don't have a problem signing, yet some are put off. I explain to people that it's like a garage ringing up to ask permission to do the work. Accepting the work to be done agrees to paying for it too.
Pain in the arse those mini cooling systems. The pressure cap usually fails and the coolant backs up to the expansion bottle. Can see that’s happened here as it’s all over the bulkhead. They also like to burn exhaust valves. Lucky you didn’t have that one this
