I am ao sad I cannot understand this except through translation! I have had this song stuck in my head from time to time, and it always felt like the joy of looking back over your life with this deep appreciation of all the happiness you actually had, and the fact that you get to take that with you forever, to light your way wherever you go. It's a part of you now. It never felt like it needed translation to me before, it was just so beautiful and happy the way it was. But it occurred to me today to look up the translation, and it kinda blew my mind how close the feeling was to what they were saying. That music can transcend so many obstacles and just get right into the heart. Even with language barriers. Still, there's this beautiful flow to the words that can't be translated. If anyone ever wanted to explain little differences, I would be deeply grateful. My favorite poet is rainer maria rilke and he only wrote in German or Austrian. There's a flow that makes the translations lose an indescribable beauty. Like the words become clunky and don't carry the same lightness it did in its native language. I appreciate so much the people who spoke both English and German that helped carry Rainers deeper meaning across that divide; the use of sayings we wouldn't have really gotten, certain words that have double meaning in their language, things like that. Anyway, I'll post the English translation in the comments if anyone wants to help. I feel like I'm missing out on something beautiful here.
