  • The past two weeks I've been in TECH for Pride and Prejudice at the Actors Co-op. What is tech? Why did it make me miss a week of videos? Answers here!

I've never heard it called tech week. But our shows have almost always been chaotic. I had a single day to do all light cues and teach the spot how to use it for our last show.

I've never heard tech week be called hell week before. I've only been immersed in theater for one semester so far so maybe that's why. I love tech but I think it's important to be aware that you won't be having high five, endless laughing kind of fun. It's more of a stressful fun that you don't mind doing because you know the work you're doing is important. I really liked that you called the appropriate attitude going into tech week having forced hope.

Last year I did the follow spot for a small production with school. Tech week was my favourite part of the whole experience 😀

Thank you for not calling it "Hell Week." I follow the same philosophy with my high school students. We love tech.

I have never heard a better metaphor for Tech so thank you I'm now using that 😊😊

Question - with actors equity you said there was an 8 hour limit on working. However, how does it work if you spend the night painting/making props? Is it just personal time or what

Joey McGinn Actors Equity only governs Actors and Stage Managers. Painters, Designers, Directors and Technicians all have their own unions. So, as a member of equity, those rules only apply when I'm working as an actor or Stage Manager. When it comes to Tech, they do allow for 2 twelve hour days, with a 2 hour break in there (we call those 10 out of 12s).
I'm also not in a tech or design union, so I'm not working under any restrictions there other than my own. However, all those unions have rules in place that allow overnights, etc. They just place hour and break restrictions that keep the workers safe.
