    Met Cozy (and his Dad), Newcastle City Hall.
    Was great to have some time with Cozy, then met his Dad, who introduced me to Richie and I got his autograph.
    Next night, met Richie again, and he remembered me. We had a discussion about Richie smashing his guitars (as he didn't the previous night).
    2nd night he obliterated one of his Strats.
    Memories like that are priceless.

    Cozy Powell was a true professional. I first became aware of him through the Jeff Beck group on the Rough and Ready album in 1971. His given name was Colin Trevor Flooks so it's obvious why he changed his name to something more memorable. Apparently he named himself after the great Jazz Drummer Cozy Cole.

    Cozy was a major inspiration as a drummer. He played with all the biggest bands. He was tight, steady and hard hitting. Always locket in the pocket. And then he had his own solo records going on, that were major hits, at least i Europe. For me his work with Ritchies Rainbow and Black Sabbath stands out, but again he played with so many. Drum solos can be a bit boring but Cozy elevated it to include classical, Beethoven-like, music and light shows etc. RIP Cozy !

He had been dating a married woman who was having problems with her husband.[11] Upset, she phoned him and asked him to come quickly to her house which was approximately 35 miles (56 km) away. As he was driving to her house, she phoned him again and asked "Where are you?" He informed her he was on his way and she then heard him say "Oh shit!" followed by a loud bang.[11]

      @cotr-christmasontherocks4649 Год назад +6

      @@saralemirande3504 Ian Paice and Cozy Powell had great respect for each other and always spoke positively about each other.
      And they knew they were made of similar stuff when it came to their drumming. Both liked Bobby Elliot and his way of playing the drums.
      They played the way R. Blackmore wanted and liked. Of course, Ian Paice would have passed the 15-minute shuffle test as well.
      Cozy was always louder, but not necessarily better than Ian Paice. Ian Paice was a more technically skilled drummer, he could do all the big band drumming like Rich, Krupa and Bellson, but he could also play hard rock and bring those swing influences into his playing.
      It is/was common to both of them that there was actually very little that they could not have played brilliantly. I'm not sure if both - purely in terms of speed - could have kept up with a Dave Lombardo, I rather doubt it. But it's also more about quantity than quality, so a comparison with the fastest Speed Metal drummers is nonsense anyway.
      Cozy's successors at Rainbow, Rondinelli and Bürgi, played "cleaner" and more "American" than Cozy, but that was also intentional - by Ritchie Blackmore ;-). From around 1981, towards the end of rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore favored a more American sound.
