John, My Wingman!!! You honor me Sir! Thanks for your very professional, frank, fair, and awesome video review. Well done Sir and I appreciate how much you get it! You fully understand the SXB, it's capabilities, how it is supposed to be used, and have did a great job with it. Thx again brother!!! EJ
Dude. I personally own this blade and I can say that this sucker is a Workhorse of a knife. Great job on the design. As a courtesy I have to tell you this story. My girlfriend and I live in North Carolina and we're making our way back home from Crowders Mountain. Given that it was dark we didn't see a deer hop out in front of the vehicle until it was too late. A couple of people that lived in the area heard the crash and went to investigate and luckily my girlfriend and I were okay as well as the vehicle. Cosmetic damage only. I had the knife on me at the time in order to show it off to a good friend of mine who joined us on a hike. Given that we didn't want the meat to go to waste my girlfriend and I took it over to her uncle's place who lived 10 minutes away from the area we were in. I was able to gut the deer, skin it and quarter it with no issue. When I was quartering the deer so we could stick it in a cooler for the ride back to my place, that knife was cleaving through bone like a hot knife through butter. I have done further tests on it from hacking away at dead trees as well as seeing if I could make a temporary survival shelter with this blade. The sucker has been used and abused and it still ticking. Again, great work on this blade.
My mom got me one for Christmas... though I haven't had a chance to try it out yet (I've only had it less than a day) I can tell this thing is a beast of a knife. it has good heft, but not so much as to make it unwieldy. Nice and sharp straight from the package. The blade shape gives it both knife and ax characteristics. I'm already in love with this knife...... The only thing that I don't like is the indentation between the blade and guard, to me this is just an area to get caught up on.
Great review. How does it compare to Tom Brown tracker ? I thought that would be discussed. It obviously longer . Chris from prepared minds 101 hated the “ Tracker “ he said. And couldn’t review it. Conversely he loved the SBX. They both are so different from other knives. Both are beasts.
This is one I may have to pick up. I like the tracker design but the standard 10” version just seems to small to really reach the full potential of the design. I wish I knew someplace local to get my hands on one to see how it feels in hand.
I just bought a Cuma evolution by tops and i was kinda worried about the rocky mountain tread since i had heard many folks don't like em but as soon as i got it in hand it all went away and i absolutely love the rocky mountain tread! I could just grip it all day long, it feel amazingly comfortable! Next knife will be the SXB i cant wait
Great knife review as always. I don't own one yet. If you haven't tried the tops Kukuri 7 get your hands on one and give it a shot. It will really surprise you. I like and have the tom brown tracker. I think EJ is a no BS guy and I'm looking forward to getting this knife.
I know this is a old video but for Gods Sake put a piece of bark or wood underneath the log already to stop it from rocking back and fourth early in the video when you work with the knife . Besides that great video .
Nice job on the SXB Gauntlet Review... Overall, I like the big multi-tool perspective concerning this large knife. The design seems to provide that get-'er-done multi-purpose blade having the variable geometry and features. Looks quile a bit more functional than the TB Tracker built more from an entertainment platform. No doubt whatsoever that it is based off the TBT... however SXB is quite obviously tweaked favorably for wilderness use to achieve more tasks in the field vs. the TBT. I liked your comment about the location of the sawback (indexing it forward for comfort, ergos/safety). I see it's achilles heel being for those dependent on firesteel performance... unwieldy, big for focusing a shower of sparks. The windier, colder (as in freezing) and frostier or wet the fire task becomes... this blade will perform exceedingly poorly, and you'll wish ya had something like a MORA light-my-fire knife as back up. Probably best to include e a steel striker like a piece of hacksaw or jigsaw blade, etc. as kit.
I decided that after the useful dialog, critique, good points by all, compliments, and mutual respects... to say to Skullcrusher Survival and the Wingman 115 you've got a friend here in Alaska. Ever in my neck of the woods, info, my services, logistics, need whatever, cooperation, correspondence, camaraderie, or lending helping hand... welcome to the Last Frontier, and my door is open anytime.
Nice review sir. It is always good to see reviews where the knife is actually put thru its paces instead of some headless pair of hands twirling it this way and that, then telling me why it is so great, or such a piece of...well, you know. With this in mind, I have a question for you. Are you familiar with the Tops M4X Punisher, and what are your opinions regarding it ? I have one already, and will be adding a Cuma Tak Ri and an SBX to it relatively soon, but still would be interested in your opinions. Thank you, and again, a great "Functional" review. P.S. I do not get all Butthurt if people do not agree with my choices. I value the opinions of "Users" more then "Handlers".
I have the m4x punisher and without a doubt it is a very functional tool that if used correctly it will do everything it's designed to do and more. I can't speak for the sxb because I have never used it. But I have a tom Brown tracker #3 and it's in my EDC rotation.
I feel one of the greatest issues facing this sort of blade is the entertainment factors vs. real world simplicities and reliance. Not even a reference to size factor... what it may or may not perform well on task-wise. Another BIG problem this knife has is wasteful in the areas of real estate and could use corrected angle to the rear portion handful of space on the handle to reduce fatigue, slippage, and knuckle banging. The designer could learn a lot from alternative tool companies that make modern Ice-Climbing-Axes for example. This would put that surface area of the weight forward belly at a much more efficient, higher energy transfer, with increased blade bite, plus hold edge longer. You would achieve bigger/stronger/faster/leverage/longevity, all at same time.
Alaska Raft Connection thanks for your comments, but until you put one in your hands and fully understand it, you will never be able to make an honest assessment. all the things you claim are wrong and can't do are way off base. the weight transfer and shifting based on tasks is amazing and very much right. it was designed not only as a survival tool but a fighting blade, so weight transfer is critical. you make some valid points but they really don't fit the SXB. I encourage folks, get one in hand, get the feel of it (longer than 45 minutes), then review and critique it. just looking at videos and pictures is in MHO a bad way to judge anything.
+Alaska Raft Connection - Alaska-BushRafter On the contray, I find you engaging and highly intelligent. Why i decided to respond, Im not defensive, critisims are the only way to truly make you take an honest look at things to make them honestly better. Ive seen alot more reviews than you know. I also like for folks to read about the journey it took to get to this point. I just point out things when folks comment that arent true. IE. the prototytpe we 1st designed the SBK-9 was exactly all the things you stated, why we drastically changed to the "SXB". I wasnt designing an axe so I had no need to see what "Alternative Tool Companies" were doing. Trust me, alot of factors went into this blade, research, multiple balde testing, hours with multiple different knife makers, studying steel. Lots of testing. I designed it out of need and practicality for what I do. My knife broke in Tanzania only 10 days into a 21 day survival challenge, not good! I was rough on it and pushed its limits, but failure is just not good enough wehn you only have one tool. So I went to work when I got home, that was 3 years ago. Extensive testing went into the SXB, personally. 6 months. My final test was 41 days in the field making sure it worked. It works very well in the real world and for why it was designed. One tool and nothing else. Not saying I always go out this way, quite the opposite honestly. I hope you get one in your hands and give me some real honest feed back on it, your the kind of person I like to have it. I also hope you can share with me the knives you have designed over the years cause Id like to check them out too. Im a knife junkie. lol. Until then I wish you well and survive on!
+Skullcrusher Survival I agree with you... I tried to edit a few things to be constructive and edited whatever all the strange extra text popping up on my reply. Thank you for thoughtful response. I also appreciate that as the true end-user you test and rely on your gear. Highly likely I'd appreciate it more in hand as a one tool option per your designated needs and know Tops made it reliable. I feel also now better dialog between us with mutual regards, and kindred spirits for the real wilderness places. It is best to understand one another vs. make fences. Thank you again. Brian (with a bit of luck this goes thru and I removed the old stuff... I wish us both to be successful in our endeavors.

I promised a hard use test on my personal SXB. To make it way more fun, I sub-contacted that job out. It's now in the possession of Tactical.
Sounds like the making of a fun video.
Awesome video! excellent knife review 👍 I've been looking at this knife for awhile now an I'm sold on it thanks.
Great video. The intro transition where you walk in was cool. Love the videos, keep them up!
Thank you.
I saw it in some Videos and thought that this is a big knife.
So I bought it and its more than big. Outstanding knife/hatchet!
Definitely getting one of these beasts, great geometry too an weight ratio an good length.
Thanks for watching.
Anytime
Very nice review. That looks like a real good survival tool. I may have to add it to my list. Thanks for what you do!

all blades have their limitations and intended uses. this one is awesome for survival and fighting.
I totally agree.

Hey Wingman long time no see.

They probably have narrow cliffs to hang the spine over for multi slow heat cycles to "Back off" the hardness on spine while leaving the edge fully..
I took the insert out of mine and made it left hand carry. Not a problem😀
Nice review its one tough design thanks for sharing atb John

I like this knife but for me it seems like it would be too heavy for a woman. What would be a smaller version?
Which ever one you pick is what I will get sxb or steel eagle delta class for a survival-combat knife
By the way if you answer I would get a kytex sheath if I got the sxb
Don’t put that on me brother. That’s a personal choice.
Wingman115 I really can't go wrong on either I think the sxb is a slightly better knife so that's what I will get thanks for the video
Wingman115 sorry if a put you on the spot
No worries. If I had to choose between the two then SXB. EJ designed a great knife.

would the first hole for the handle scales be a problem considering its right where the steel is at the thinnest?
