William Friedkin is indeed a master - the equal of Kubrick - in my opinion - who has been directing for more than half a century. I remember watching his 'Cruising' which I considered to be a masterpiece. Friedkin created a hypnotic atmosphere - in the world of gay - sadomasochistic sex - with e serial killer on the loose - yet amazingly the movie was panned - as was Sorcerer - his tribute to Henri Clouzot's Wages of Fear. Although Friedkin followed the same plot - with desperate characters holed up in a South American backwater who compete to drive a truck with nitro-glycerine to stop an oil well fire - his tribute exemplified his own brilliance as a director - and exists as a superb example in the art of movie making. Similarly - To Live and Die in LA - was unknown to me until recently - yet it was made nearly fifty years ago - and hasn't aged - but to see it recently was a revelation. Every linking scene was enthralling Friedkin's movies are an antidote to the many awful Hollywood blockbusters churned out - as if produced on an assembly line. Why he hasn't been widely recognised for his undoubted greatness as a director before now - beats me.
Such a humble director, full of wisdom, humor and a great visionary director. RIP Mr. Friedkin.
I switched off at "Standing ovation just for the Hell of it."
