Build a steam condenser? Fitting and sweating pipes together is probably even easier than all the amazing work you are doing to get the basement built!
Thanks for the update.! Will be working on a DIY steam condenser in my next video. Some trial and error involved but I can’t vent outside without permits and approvals so it HAS to work! Best wishes!
Planning is progress, good work.
Thanks for the updates! You'll be brewing before you know it. Cheers!
Hopefully by this weekend!
The first beer at the new brewery should be a Kellerbier 🙏
Ah man that's a great idea!!
There is a Solids/sewage lift pump you can get to move your wastewater to where you need to. They make them for retrofitting basement utilities.
That is the eventual plan when putting a sink in. It will plug into the GFCI receptacle I just put in.
so far so good!
See you soon!
Looks like a fun project! Thanks for the updates, it’s interesting to watch!
I'm definitely having fun, its slower going than I'd like but hopefully I'll be able to get brewing with the minimal required upgrades by this weekend!
Very cool!!! I’ve been waiting for an update.
👍🏻👍🏻🍺🍺
Thanks Tom!! Still a ways to go but definitely a bit more progress
@@TheApartmentBrewer yes sir!!!
I can't hide my jealously! This is going to be such an awesome home brewery. I can't wait until the day I have my own garage where I can make my own permanent setup. Good luck with the rest of the build!
I'm excited!!
Things are coming on! Looking good so far. Eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
Hopefully won't take too long!
You will get there and be up and running in no time. Nice update video.
Hopefully by this weekend!
Thanks for the update. I like to see how other brew rooms are set up.
Glad you're enjoying it!
How about diverting your unwanted water into a rain barrel and fit it with a sump pump? I would even toss in a diverter so I could capture hot water to use for cleaning in another vessel, like a 10 gallon igloo cooler? The sump pump would keep the waste container clear without you having to do anything. (Might have to be careful about hop/grain debris in the pump.) Full on sewage pumps are quite expensive and it seems you want something less permanent.
Maybe, we will see. A rain barrel will take up as much space as a sink though
Good things are coming 👍
Can't wait to get going!
Super interesting updates! Looking forward to more! Cheers! (Also, just keep the window closed to make your next video "brewing in a vacuum").
Haha I like avoiding Carbon Monoxide poisoning though
Just a heads up on the hood from someone who vents hoods for a living. The flexible duct you are planning on using will cut the airflow considerably compared to hard pipe. Usually 7”hard pipe will cut a 1000 cfm fan down to about 400 cfm. Flexible pipe will cut it down to around 250 cfm. That however may work for you. Just keep in the back of your mind, if it isn’t venting how you would like, consider 10” rigid pipe.
PS, really have been inspired by your channel, keep it up!
Im in the same situation and your comment is very appreciated !!!
Good to know!! I was aware of the CFM reduction with a small diameter vent pipe, or a long run, but I figured by getting a higher CFM fan and larger diameter (8") ducting I could counteract that. I did not know that flexible pipe reduces it even more.
@@TheApartmentBrewer i have a 250cfm hood that exhaust through the back wall in a 4in pipe so my cfm could be less and it does a good job. I have a 120v robobrew so it probably doesn’t boil as hard as a clawhammer but even if you get 400cfm out of your 1000cfm fan it should be enough.
Nice.. I've never considered a floor drain in my basement.. keeping a dedicated mop and bucket for the brewery is a perfectly fine alternative.
Yeah, I figured I'd be fine with a mop and bucket too. No need to spend that much time and effort on something like that unless I know I'll be in that space for like 5 years
You can fit a weldless TC port to your existing lid and mount a steam condenser to that, I'll try to use a shotgun-style condenser to partly eliminate my steam. If that won't work I'll mount spray for cold water.
I may end up in that direction but I want to see how well the hood works first.
👌🏼
FWIW - steam condensers work fine with a flat lid - just as long as they make a tight seal. My steam condenser attaches to the side of the kettle near the top via 1.5" TC. Once the steam condenser is running it creates a vacuum that pulls the steam out whatever port you're using for the condenser.
I bought a similar one from Bobby at BrewHardware. This is pretty much the same location I have mine and it works amazing: ruclips.net/video/sNfRkdncQzg/видео.html
Good to know! Do you need a gasket of some sort to achieve a good seal? With the Clawhammer being metal-on-metal is that sufficient?
@@TheApartmentBrewer Not sure about that - I assume it depends on the kettle and lid. I have a Brau Supply kettle and my lid sits pretty tight without any type of gasket.
Hey great videos. Entertaining. Love the grain to glass style. Been brewing on and off for a few years now. Just wondering…. You ever considered doing a segment were you try fellow brewer/ subscribers home brew to critique them?
Glad you like the videos! Realistically I probably won't end up doing something like that, sorry
No worries. I stumbled on a channel that does it and thought it was a neat concept. However, i understand the hesitance since you never know what you are going to get from someone especially since you are consuming it. Keep up with the videos
Looking good! What's the link to the hood, would love to check that out.
Thanks Matt! This is the hood: amzn.to/3LiSXxq
If you use 4 inch square boxes you will find alot less effort to cram wires in the box especially when using #12 wire
Sadly I already got all my boxes, but that's a good point. 12 AWG is a bit stiff
Nice looking vent hood. Style points count. I am not so sure the steam condenser is any better than a hood as it wastes water, even if dialed in. If you think you want one, what does the Clawhammer Kettle measure across the diameter?
It seems like it will get the job done, at least I hope so. I am not setup for that steam condenser without a water supply anyway so it seems like a little too much for now. FWIW the kettle is something like 13.5" I think
@@TheApartmentBrewer should you decide later that you would like to experiment with a steam condenser, the Spike Flex fermenter comes in 2 varieties, no pressure is just Spike Flex, pressure is Spike Flex+. The only difference between the 2 is the lid. The bucket itself measures 14 in diameter. Both lids can be purchased from Spike. The Apartment brewer probably has some sway with manufacturers though. ;) I suspect that close of a diameter would be a simple marriage, as either lid has a port out the top for which to vent. Just a thought. I have always been a bit of a tester of engineering. Uneducated formally, steeped in the engineer's laboratory. Cheers.
@@beeroquoisnation So you're talking about more of a brew in a conical type setup? Interesting idea - I know you're working on something like that, and thats a very innovative idea! It's always fun to see how homebrewers innovate, there are so many different ways to get the beer at the end of the process!
@@TheApartmentBrewer Well, you mentioned that there was no lid available. Never let the marketplace dictate to you what is available or not. It is acceptable to take those matters into your own hands. You're not reselling it, you're using it. That lid would be easy to fit on your Clawhammer if you wanted such a lid. Finding a gasket comprised of heat rated silicone would be the challenge. I said challenge...not limitation.
Can you link the ducts you got? I’m in a room in my cellar as well and need suction through a window..
Sure, this is the duct and vent I got:

@@TheApartmentBrewer nice thanks. And the fans are from Amazon as well?

I guess so lol
@@TheApartmentBrewer time to update merch, channel name, etc...😂😂

We’ve got to work on your “ahh..ummm..” Sounds picky, or OCD, but..in just six minutes, you scored over 50 of them…it’s quite noticeable..yeah, feel free to give me a rant, but, I’m honestly not being hostile, or really even trying to criticize you, i enjoy you and your excellent content, I just want you to be aware that you’re doing it. It’s known as a “self comforting” mannerism, it helps audibly connect ideas and sentences while your brain is thinking of the next thing to say. You can’t stop a habit, only replace it with a new one..like a tiny silent pause instead of an ahh or umm..I’ll wait a while for you to see this, then delete it..
John, I acknowledge your constructive criticism, but this is the context - I shot this last night at about 10 PM after getting back from spending 72 hours in the field with essentially no sleep the entire time. I didn't want to spend hours editing this to remove the ums so it is what it is.
