I also love how All You Wanna Do doesn’t hide just HOW young Howard was, but explicitly says it. ”He was 23 and I was 13, going on 30”
There’s hints early in her song that all isn’t well. That’s one, and then the second guy is described with “gets what he wants and he won’t take no.”
I’m still beating myself up for not picking up those clues the first time I heard this song.
Historically he was in his thirty's not 23 so even more creepy
And it just shows how broken she is... That's why I love her character (and wish to play her) next to Anne of Cleeves and Anne Boleyn...
My only wish is that they would have actually mentioned that she was dead by 19, i think it would help understand her character more.
If you squint you could say, "well, she wasn't technically underage by the standards of the time because in those days, the age of consent for females was 12" (look at Romeo and Juliet--Juliet was fourteen with an offer of marriage and her mother had given birth to her by that age). But that doesn't change the fact that he was an older man in a position of trust, who had no intention or prospect of marrying her and bragged to others about what he got her to do and how he planned to have her "maidenhead". Just...ick. Especially when you consider that, for a noblewoman, her reputation determined her future and if it had gotten out, she'd have had no prospects of a decent marriage or any kind of a future. Manox had to have known that. And he didn't care.
The Only Thing You Wanna Do is such a jaw dropping song! The way it progresses from pop song bragging about being promiscuous to revealing her trauma and sexual exploitation throughout her life is just heart breaking and almost painful to listen to. It's incredible!
Andrew Jones it’s “All You Wanna Do” by the way, I don’t mean to sound rude just trying to help xx
It shot to the top of my list of repeat songs.
Also, its a BOP
Ramieverse ! You got that right!😂
Stops me in my tracks every time. Wish I could write like that.
A note on the costumes for the Queens, though...the only one who wears pants is Catherine Parr, the "survivor" (even if she only outlived Henry by a year before dying of childbirth complications). Anne Boleyn of course has her signature "B" necklace, but the Queens are also dressed in their "signature colors" that would've appeared on their official logos and mottoes (and that they were often wearing in official portraits). Anyway, Parr wearing pants is also significant in her life of "female empowerment through education and I'm also a legit published author when women were never published".
Also, both beheaded Queen's are the only ones with chokers
@@caoimh3 BRILLIANT.
Not to Mention both Aragon and Cleves prominently show the spiky headband because they were already royalty of their respective kingdoms even before marrying Henry
Ramieverse ! I LOVE THE COSTUME DESIGN FOR THIS SHOW
IWillBeHers I love cast costumes and not the understudy costumes only because I like the empowerment feel when I look at Parr rather than another understudy also having pants and it makes no sense for the character. Plus majority of the understudies have black clothing so it looks odd to see bright green and blue and the rest have black dark clothing. The costumes look amazing but the understudy costumes are not my favorite
Divorced, beheaded, and died.

Some may say I ruined their lives...

And tonight we are LIVE!
Yes! Other musical shout outs: Aragon is a mix of Beyonce and Gloria Estefan and Parr is very Alicia Keys.
Boleyn calls to mind Lily Allen, at least for me.
Cleves reminds me very much of Estelle.
House of Holbein is pure German rave Eurovision.
Katherine Howard is very Brittney Spears or Madonna.
@@starbites1984 Fun fact! The girls did an interview talking about who their sounds are inspired by/based on, and Katherine Howard's was Ariana Grande and Britney Spears!
#accurate
I feel Rihanna/Nicki Minaj off of Cleves
This is a big part of the musical, Queenspirations. Each queen has musical influences.
Aragon is Beyoncé and Shakira
Boleyn is Lilly Allen and Avril Lavigne (Millie O'Connell has also said she's inspired by Kate Nash)
Seymour is Adele and SIa
Cleves is Rihanna and Nikki Minaj (Alexia McIntosh also said she's inspired by Grace Jones)
Howard is Brittney and Ariana
Parr is Alicia Keys and Emeli Sandé
I can tell pretty quickly that this is simply not my thing, but I can also tell that is very good at being exactly what it wants to be.
Ryan Hall Couldn’t agree more!
Darn, you missed a chance to make this video 6 minutes long
Oof! 28 seconds short!
She also forgot to mention “Get Down” for some reason!
@@kieranstark7213 no she didn't.
@@isaaaaa1920 No but she did miss No Way
Have you heard the recording floating around of one of the Chicago Kat Howard’s? She starts breaking down in the final chorus, and it’s the most difficult thing I’ve evwr heard. The final “the only thing you wanna do is-“ ends with the saddest kiss sound and soft sobs instead of a sigh. I hope they have some expansion planned for Broadway, too.
archergwen oh I want to hear this SO BAD
Where can I find that?
That sounds incredible! I remember in the early days (back when Grace Mouat was the only alternate and they were touring) I heard an audio of Grace as Howard and it seems she has more of a "help please get me out of this situation" voice (idk how to describe it) towards the end. I just love seeing how the other actresses portray the queens.
@@ameliajames1463 Took me a mo to track it back down, but here you go! It's from tumblr. revengeparty.tumblr.com/post/185852757203/six-june-23-2019-chicago-shakespeare-theater
@@syd7959 I found it on tumblr, posted a link in another reply. The actress is Samantha Pauly.
If this were an alternative playlist based on who the Queens are influenced by:
Aragon: Beautiful Liar by Beyoncé and Shakira,
Boleyn: Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne
Seymour: When We Were Young by Adele
Cleves: Feeling Myself (ft. Beyoncé) by Nicki Minaj
Howard: Circus by Britney Spears
Parr: Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys
This is my personal list and I had to cut some songs that also fit perfectly which included:
Irreplaceable by Beyoncé for Catherine Aragon
F*** You and Smile by Lily Allen and What the Hell by Avril Lavigne for Anne Boleyn
Cheers (Drink to That) by Rihanna and ***Flawless by Beyoncé for Anne of Cleves
Hello, Someone Like You by Adele and Big Girls Cry by Sia for Jane Seymour
Thank U Next by Ariana Grande and Slave 4 U by Britney Spears for Katherine Howard
Best Thing I Never Had by Beyoncé and No One by Alicia Keys for Catherine Parr
Parr is my favorite. Granted I’m biased, as her castle/final resting place after Henry VIII’s death is near where I studied abroad, and I love her for being the first woman who’s writings published under own name in English. I have a small prayer book that adapts/modernizes her writings into modern English
It also helps that, in the show, she's the one who brings everyone together and makes them realize that they shouldn't be fighting each other.
What is the book's title?
Bartosz The Spice of Wisdom: Praying with Katherine Parr
@@nolanmcbride5653 Thanks!
Nolan McBride same I love her and how Maiya played her
another thing with all you wanna do is that the staging is almost hard to watch. at the beginning , the queens just dance around howard like you expect, but as the song goes on, the surrond her and while howard desperately tries to break away from them. the song ends with lights down and katherine just standing there. it’s actually really chilling.
I had NO FREAKIN IDEA this is what the musical was about, if I did I would have listened to it's OST much sooner! The people who wrote this are geniouses!
Espanholina ALSC yeah same! I just finished listening to it last week
As part of a summer camp I went to see Frozen on Broadway. I was in a group of six girls and as code names the counselor gave us names of the six wives. I was Anne Boleyn.
That's what really got me to listen to the music and I'm really happy I did.
Interestingly, this show had its US premiere at the Shakespeare Theater in Chicago (where I live) as it has a connection to Henry VIII, one of the Bard's early tragedies. They had a BRILLIANT hybrid production of Midsummer last year. I could see this as the British Hamilton in an instant.
Wait....Wasn’t “Henry VIII” one of Shakespeare’s last plays?
@@johnvinals7423 Last? Oh I'm so sorry :/
Cassandra Saldana Tis fine, Madame.
YES, that Midsummer Night's Dream production was GORGEOUS!
People always seem to miss that Cleves is inspired by Beyoncé, her song literally says “Ok ladies let’s get in reformation” which is a reference to the Beyoncé song formation
That's true, I think both the divorcees were based on her music (i mean have you heard no way)
maybe because they're single ladies???? idk man
Catherine of Aragon is based off of Beyoncé while Anne of Cleves was based off of a mix of Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. Also I am pretty sure that Anne of Cleves having the word reformation in her song has nothing to do with the Beyoncé song, but talking about reformation of the church because right before that line she talks about Lutheranism which started the whole reformation of churches around Europe and was also created in Germany, the home country of Anne of Cleves. Anne of Cleves was chosen to be Henry’s wife by Thomas Cromwell who wanted actual reformation in the Church of England to make it an actual Protestant Church instead of it being basically Catholic Church that was just run by Henry instead of the Pope.
I discovered this show about a month ago and I am in LOVE
I'm curious to see how this show plays in the U.S. since it's rooted very heavily in British history in a way that's mostly irrelevant to Americans. I think it could easily have cross-pond appeal, but I do agree that it might need a bit of expansion to be Broadway worthy.
MC Wyman that’s a very good point! But I think it could manage. For example The English audiences had almost no history on Hamilton but it is a huge success here!
@Rs2187 What state did you go to? I went to school in Florida and I don't remember the six wives being taught at all. Maybe mentioned in passing like "yes he had a lot of wives, many having terrible fates" or something obscure, never in detail :/
It kind of reminds me of Horrible Histories where it's more of a British thing but it does have its American Appeals hell I'm American and I adore Horrible Histories and definitely thinking about checking out this show it sounds fun really
Cathy A oh I adore horrible history’s! (However I am English!) but definitely check it out! It has a lot of the same energy as horrible histories just a bit more serious!
Rs2187 thank you!
Cleaver that Anne and Catherine wear chokers. Since they were both beheaded
Not only were they the wives that were beheaded, but they were also cousins since Anne Boleyn’s mother and Katherine Howard’s father were brother and sister.
Oh Diva, Can you review Rocky Horror: Let's do the Time Warp again?
TheSharpestofThorns ___ yeassssssssa (that’s the only song I’ve heard from the show and it’s good)
The original or remake?
And how about Diva aka Musical Hell aka Christi Esterle also review Citizen Queens?! It is so reminiscent to Six, except it is an acapella group that I got to see in person!!
Eh… not a fan of either.

Will you be doing The Lighting Thief musical for future Know the Score episode?
I absolutely love this musical. It's songs are really catchy and great and as a bonus they're also really educational. It still teaches people about the Tudors but makes it more fun than if you were to just watch a documentary on them. Songs are still real dark though. I'm going to see it when it comes to NY and I can't wait.
Cool pp and username
@@rowanelizabeth24 Duck is Lord.
The costumes remind me of the original Starlight Express. So now in my head all of Henry VIII’s wives are train cars.
I'm so glad it's not just me! Particularly some of the alternates' costumes.
This looks absolutely fascinating, Diva! I hadn't heard of this show previously, but now I seriously can't wait to listen to the soundtrack. It seems like this show might be a great new option for high school Drama clubs to put on, given that it has an all-female cast (and sadly most drama clubs tend to be mainly female!) and it fuses history with modern musical sensibilities.
OMG!! Thank you so much for doing this video!! I went to see Six in West End last month and it was absolutely amazing, so it's cool to have my favourite musical theatre channel talk about a musical I've actually seen
Oh my god, when I saw this in my recommended I actually screamed. I love Six, so the excitement when I saw you covering it was- well. a lot
I saw this show when nobody knew what it was. It was in a tiny theatre at the Glasgow SCC theatre and now its going to be in one of Glasgow's biggest theatres on tour and honestly? I'm so proud.
Also I'm seeing it on tour again in Glasgow. Subtle flex.
Oh my gosh! I literally squealed when I saw this!!!!!! *grabs popcorn* this is gonna be good!
I am a history nerd and through high school the Tudor age was my jam. When I heard about this musical I jumped on it. It's extremely accurate and even taps on some stuff that you don't realize was added well after the fact by secondhand sources.
This musical made me rethink Catherine Howard. Especially how young she was I always imagined her in her early twenties. Her age always seems to be brushed aside in most documentaries.
Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful show!!! I've never heard of it before, but now I've been listening to the soundtrack on loop for the past week!
I’ve been waiting for this review, for along time‼️
What is your opinion on the recent Cats trailer?! To me it looks insane, and I'm seriously wondering what kind of acid trip is Tom Hooper is on?!
Thank you diva!! Fantastic video
Also I just wanted to say that what got me into the show were the awesome costumes, the perfect mix between their pop diva and musical inspirations, Tudor inspired fashion, and each queen’s personality, they are *chefs kiss*
SIX for Best Musical
YES! :D Also stoked that it's coming to Broadway next Spring!
Wonderful video! I don't think I'll ever forget seeing "All You Wanna Do" on stage, because the choreography tells such a story.
@@dracolikesmoney From what I gather, it can vary from show to show. The one I saw, the other queens keep grabbing at her in the last chorus and at the end she quietly sobs on the last line. Then she perks up and goes "and then I got beheaded!" While that part was funny at the time, looking back I realize it's just another tragic layer; it's like she's putting up a brave face and pretend that it didn't actually get to her.
lydia the whole choreography is very Britney Spears inspired, it’s a dance pop with tons of hand choreo of grabbing her all over the place while she poses and sings, and as the song progresses she gets way more uncomfortable and the Hands get more forceful, the final chorus is her literally trying to break away from the hands of the other queens while almost sobbing and literally having a mental breakdown
Susana Lopez it’s representing how suffocating her life was and everything she dealt with. it’s easily one of my top songs. it sounds so happy when you first listen to it but the actual message when live is so incredibly well done
There was a time in my life when six wasn’t part off it. I thank you musical hell for making it part of my life.
Saw this tonight in Boston. Great timing on your part lol. The show was an absolute blast.
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO TALK ABOUT SIX!
as a BIG ol’ fan of six .. i’m so happy to see you cover this!
The more I hear about this musical the more I can't wait to hopefully see it one day.
Ahhh yes Six!!!! This show is so good and even better live. And also thank you for using Six Chicago footage became many people try to discount them and act they don’t exist.
Dang it, Diva, you keep convincing me to listen to new shows I had been afraid to approach because of all the hype, but do genuinely sound really cool. First "Hamilton", now this--I can't wait to give it a try! :D
“He was 23 and I was 13 going on 30.” Oh no...
“He takes what he wants and he won’t take no.” Oh no...
“Then he starts saying all this stuff, he cares so much and calls me love-“ oh no no no...
“Just mates, no chemistry. I get him and he gets me. And there’s nothing more to it. He just cares so much, he’s devoted. He says we have a conn....ection...” oh no...
“Bit my lip and pull my hair, as you tell me I’m the fairest of the fair.” I’m sad now.
Did???? One of my favorite youtubers??? JUST TALK ABOUT MY FAVORITE MUSICAL?
you had me at Tudors meets Spice Girls
I much preferred Six to Hamilton.
Both plays are freakin’ awesome!!!
both are awesome in their own ways
I'm so obsessed with Six! My only complaint is that it's short. I would have take more but as it is, it's close to perfection.
How did it take you this long to review this Diva? Figured it would be right up your alley!
*screams in All You Wanna Do*
What do you think about Beetlejuice the musical? It's really popular rn and it seems to be resonating with people, (and tbh i love it ) so I'm curious to see what you think.
As I understand it, Ann Boleyn's reputation as a cheater is largely unsubstantiated, while Catherine Howard's had actual evidence backing it up.
On the other hand, Howard was exploited by much older men (again, she was THIRTEEN when Henry Mannox was fooling around with her), and the law that made her guilty of treason didn't come about until after she was imprisoned. Basically they found out about her sexual history and then found a way to use it as an excuse to execute her.
@@MusicalHell Not just older men. At least half of them also had more status then her. Heck, Parr put it best in her song: "If Henry says it's you, then it's you."
@@MusicalHell You can thank Henry for that. He created the law of, "Not disclosing past sexual history is a form of treason," as a response for his wife's, "infidelity."
SEGASister And yet he was a serial adulterer. Yay, double standards!
I was lucky enough to see this show a few months ago in Chicago - it was absolutely amazing!
Just in time! I'm seeing this tomorrow and I'm super excited. I've wanted to see it for ages!!
Okay that premise is fucking awesome.
This sounds right up my alley. I hope to see this on Broadway if it comes here.
Previews on Broadway start in February!
@@MusicalHell Thanks! I'm def gonna save up for a ticket for this.
I'm completely obsessed with this music right now and will see the show in Canada soon! I agree that it could use some more expansion, but I love that, like Hamilton, it take a story you think you know and takes a different angle with historical figures. Well done, I say!
I’ve been putting off watching/listening to this, but a positive review from Diva? Now I have to investigate.
YAS B THIS IS MY FAVORITE
I'm so excited to see this show in December!!
I couldn’t really get into it because the genres aren’t really up my alley, musically speaking
but I appreciate this input
I gotta be honest, what they did with Anne of Cleves really irritated me. Now maybe they address this in dialogue and I haven’t seen a recording of the full performance, but speaking just for the album it’s pretty annoying to come out trumpets blaring “this is what actually happened, here are the misconceptions”, and then not use that Anne’s portrait was likely an accurate portrayal as the artist would probably have received some sort of punishment from Henry if it turned out his marriage was based on a false depiction.
Thank you for making me aware of this soundtrack because holy s**t its good!
I've been seen a lot of this musical in your blog. Nice to see a proper review of it.
I got to attend the last performance in Chicago. I enjoyed it, but agree that it could do with some expansion on its themes. And I definitely found "All You Wanna Do" to be the most powerful number - how many songs are their own dark reprise?
Exactly! The staging and dancing pulls it all together with the queens surrounding Howard towards the end symbolizing exploitation. Amazing!
I hope to see this in Brazil ASAP
I've always gotten GoGos vibes from "Don't Lose Ur Head" for some reason.
Thanks Diva for introducing Six to me, in April im seeing it
Amazing musical, saw it live in London. My favourite solo song is Hear of Stone.
You should do an At The Source about the history of the six wives
ngl i got SO excited when i saw this in my recommended
Oh yeah, you can DEFINITELY hear the Britney in the Catherine Howard song.... I think it’s the 6/8 swung feel and the bII harmonies.
Diva, do you plan on reviewing Descendants 3??
I recently heard the Australian cast and they made an effort to sound British. I also heard the West End version of Heathers where they affected an American accent. Funnily, Americans can't seem to be bothered.
I love this show nice to know a lot of people love it as well
Hi Diva,
Have you seen the broadway adaptation of Groundhog Day and what did you think of it?
Wow definitely gonna check it out
Please for the love of everything unholy, review the broadway Matilda. It is so adorable!!
After hearing all you want to do I take everything bad I had ever said about Katherine Howard being a stuck up who got herself in hot water
I really would love if they make a special remix of the cast album with popular artist like Adele, Brittney Spears, Sia, and others kinda like what they did with the Hamilton Mixtape
I saw it before it went to the West End and I'm so so glad that Six is goi g from strength to strength
Idea: a musical where figures from history that our often demonized/misrepresented (Caligula, Genghis Khan etc) are put on trial by the "heroes" of history (all of whom will be dickheads like Columbus and such) and the audience is left to mull over the morality of the figures involved (for the most part) with a devil type figure representing the "accused" and an angel type figure representing the prosecutors.
"And a Broadway production scheduled for early next year" *looks at date* ouch.
Yeah, that really hurt because the previews were scheduled to begin the day they shut everything down. It did finally open, though; I saw it in January and loved it!
They truly are queens
This seems super cool! 💜
I really want to see this one, I just have to find where it's playing...
i do love the music and the aesthetic of this show, but i also agree with a lot of the critics who say that six doesn't really deliver on the promise of subverting the audience's previous notions of the sex wives. this is especially true when it comes to anne boleyn and katherine howard, who both pretty much get treated as airheads, and not in the fun, cheeky way that lets you know there's more than meets the eye. a lot of people have pointed out that this is especially problematic when it comes to howard, because even in his day, mannox, who she sings about "conquering with her sexuality" was a known child predator who made katherine really uncomfortable. i love the depth that catherine of aragon and especially jane seymour get, but six frustrates me because it doesn't really dig as deep as it could for the more misunderstood of the six queens. that said, "ex-wives" is a serious bop.
Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of the concert aspect of the show. I do enjoy some of the songs like All You Wanna Do and the opening Ex-Wives (good god they're just so damn catchy), and I do like expanding more on history like Henry's wives for this generation.

I am going to have to check out this musical for myself. :)
For some reason, this musical never sat well with me. While I appreciate some of the historical accuracies, I was always sort of bothered how Howard was sexualised, when she was quite young- about seventeen when she died. Worse yet, she was molested by one of her teachers before she married Henry VIII, and although the musical does acknowledge the fact that she was young, I feel that it just makes it worse that she's portrayed as a "sexy" character.
Ocareening all you want to do, her song shows how bad it all was and has her have a breakdown on stage
I’d love to see a Groundhog Day know the score... it was done dirty by broadway
You know... I think some of them had it worse.
Cleves has always been Rihanna to me
Why is it that everytime there is power pop ballad in a musical people go straight to Adele? Her songs sound nothing like these ballads, which are more heavily influenced by 90s power pop and 2000s teen pop.
Adele is cited by Marlowe and Moss as Seymour's "Queenspiration" (along with Sia). I'd take it up with them.
@@MusicalHell I think most people think of her big voice and superficially compare her with the styles of Whitney, Mariah, and Celine, when musically she’s closer to someone like Carole King.
I'm insulted by the idea that Cleves is anything other than Rihanna-esque
Honestly (and don’t crucify me), I really didn’t like six. I’m always one for historical musicals, but this one let me down. It’s music is campy, cliche, and hackneyed. Six is a great idea with poor execution, and I expected wayyyy more from it.
I was like 666 lol
I'm not really a pop person but Anne's portrayal is totally inaccurate. She wasn't a homewrecker it's unlikely that with her education and devout Christian beliefs that she would have slept around. She certainly wouldn't have said was going to hell
It looks more like a pop concert than a full length musical
It's a one act musical STAGED AS a concert, still doesn't make it any less valid as a musical...
That's ok I gathered that it's just not my style I'm more used to musicals like le mis and the lion king.
While her portrayal as a seductress and flirt is 100% inaccurate, to me the core message of the song is her being unapologetic and outspoken. She was a queen who demanded what she deserved and would not let herself be pushed around and that’s ultimately what killed her. Her last words were lowkey “I really didn’t do anything wrong but I’m sorry you (Henry)felt that way, Please pray for him people” so in that aspect I feel like the show does get her in spirit
Anne was a protest? and she was charged with adultery with 5 men, which was one of the reasons she was excuted (that is if your talking about Anne Boleyn?)
all you wanna do sounds like womanizer
