The Shot against the Cavaliers. Switching hands in mid-air against the Lakers. The Shrug against the Trail Blazers. The Dream Team. Leaving the game having proved you're the best player in its history. Then coming back and proving it all over again. Fifty-five on the Knicks. The best regular season record in the history of the game. Seventy-two wins and ten losses. Winning a championship to top it off. The Flu Game against the Jazz. The Final Shot against the Jazz. Six championships. Two three-peats. Never lost in the Finals. Never even went to a Game Seven. The greatest scorer in the history of the game. The greatest perimeter defender to ever play. The archetype of what a true competitor is. An unrelenting will to win that will never be matched. The GOAT.

    The greatest ball thief ever. In ONLY 12 seasons with the bulls, MJ was already 2nd all time in steals! John Stockton is first, but he played for 20 YEARS!
    Just like Kareem's all time record, Kareem played for 20 YEARS! If MJ did that he would have like 45,000 points! Wake up folks! Forget the media and hype, MJ IS the most creative, most driven, had amazing fundamentals, super high BB I.Q, and was a great leader and clutch master. In the playoffs, his records are off the charts! He changed BB forever and took it international. MJ was schooling the best in the league EVEN BEFORE he was in the league and at 40 years old, was still holding his own against the BEST players in the league. NO ONE HAS EVER DONE THAT BEFORE! Not Kareem, Not Wilt, Not Oscar, etc, etc, etc, I could go on and on, but you get my point.

MJ as Chris said defied conventional wisdom. It was a big mans game but a shooting guard dominated.

    Jordan in his prime is a vastly superior defender to anyone in todays game. MJ shut down Isiah Thomas to under 10 pts for three games in one 1989 series. Isiah the next year would averaged 28 on 54% in the finals. So it clearly wasn't just the hand checking rules that made MJ a great defender.
    Then in 92 he shut down clyde drexler to 40% shooting. Lebron has never guarded a top 5 all time PG the way MJ did to Isiah, he played two quarters of defense on Derrick Rose. Nor has he shut down a top 5 all time player at his position like Jordan on Drexler. Instead, Lebron let Durant drop 32 a game on 54% shooting against him

      And to add to that, he guarded Rose like the last four possessions... Rose could have easily taken him to the hole and as great a chase down artist LeBron is, it wasn't guaranteed he'd get to Rose ball to block it cause we all know how deadly Rose was back then... Instead he just chose to take jump shots so yea, I can't really credit LeBron as saying he shut him down but I get your point tho lol.

In fact, every single all-star during Pippen's career scored more on Pippen than they did the rest of the league. Look it up. Pippen was a great, great team defender, but he is vastly overrated as a man-to-man defender. In contrast Jordan has the biggest deficit of any player in NBA history: MJ scored 30.1 points, while his counterpart score only 14.6. I often thought that MJ played with more energy on the defensive end of the floor.

    This is why I'll always consider Jordan the greatest that ever lived. Guys like Kobe and Lebron are incredibly exceptional athletes. No doubt about it. But they're always compared to Jordan from an offensive perspective, never a defensive one. Anyone defended by Jordan ran a substantial risk of having the ball swatted away, stolen, or intercepted. Hell he even swatted away one of Shaq's shots. It's why Jordan won Defensive Player of the Year in 88 and why the Bulls won their 6th championship when Jordan stole the ball from Karl Malone in the last minute of game 6. Even if someone manages to be [almost] as big of an offensive threat, it was Jordan's defensive skills and court awareness that elevates him far above all the rest.

      elbryan9 Lebron can't be compared with mj in defense because mj don't have the size to outposition people like david robinson or karl Malone or guard a kevin Durant head to head. Mj was king at off ball defense not great at on ball defense. Lebron is the biggest A hole in off ball defense history hence to his ridiculous speed and prediction on intercepting passes or chasedown blocks.

    • @elbryan9
      @elbryan9 9 лет назад +7

      shamier smith I agree that mj was better at off ball defense than on ball defense (one need only look at all his interceptions and blocked shots to see that), but to say that he wasn't great at on ball defense... I don't know about that. lol And yeah, his stature really wasn't conducive to guys like David Robinson and such, though he still did an admiral job (see what I did there :D ) - he swatted guys like Shaq after all, but he did a pretty remarkable job at shutting down smaller, much more squirrelly guys who are harder to defend against. And lets not forget, _nobody_, in the league wanted Jordan defending them, on ball or off...

    • @sirm.a.r.s4640
      @sirm.a.r.s4640 9 лет назад +2

      elbryan9 He wasn't great on on ball defense because nobody can name a all time great player he garuded consistently. Pippen was the one who was holding down malone garuded magic 90 feet in the playoffs and every other star in that era not jordan. Jordan tried stepping to iverson and got crossed. Mj is not that great when it comes to great players. He also swats behind the back of many players bigger than him. If you can find me a block of mj that resembles lebron swatting tiago splitters dunk face to face at the rim in mid air? I can give mj the nod buuuut no. Lebron swatted tyson chandler and spillter face to face mj never even swatted wilkins face to face let alone a malone, ewing, robinson or shaq. He did a great job of defending players that weren't the stars of the team.

      shamier smith you bring up pippen guarding magic 90 feet. Although it is true, you have to remember that Jordan was older and was out of basketball for 2 years without playing so he tired faster. Before that Jordan almost always guarded the best offensive threat head to head game in and game out. You must have missed Jordan in his prime. How many DPOY does lebron have ???

      whiteboiie15 Bulls played magic in the finals in 1991. How was mj older? Next, mj left the league after the 93 title against the suns and didn't play in 94. You just got caught brotha.
      Next mj never gaurded bird, isaih, wilkins,stockton, gary payton, or any of the great big men of that era game in and game out. Next, Mj got award because of his steals leading the league. Defensive rating mj was lower than hakeem and in defensive win shares. Defensive box plus or minus, mj wasn't in the top ten either. Through advanced metrics, many other defensive players were better and consistent on defense than mj. Mj just had the juice with all the scoring so he had that spolight hakeem was averaging two blocks and two steals and was top 5 in defensive win shares and box plus minus and defensive rating. Mj just had high average steals but not that high in blocks yet, hakeem had a even number of blocks and steals but mj got it. Eh it's an eh

      Alpha Omega Personally yes, Id say he’s more “complete”. He’s better at rebounding and passing. He’s better at shooting the three. Hes not as good a scorer or defender as MJ, but he was still great in both those aspects.
      Again, I know MJ is a better player and the GOAT, but you can definitely argue that Bird is the more well rounded player.
      Also Bird is not some laughing stock.. before MJ came around he was in GOAT discussions. And Bird held his own against MJ, has plenty highlights scoring on Bulls and eliminating them in playoffs. MJ didn’t have half the team that Bird had back then but still, if you hold MJ in such high regard, show respect for the guy who was beating him and his team.

    Jordan's ability to anticipate plays as they were happening, and his athleticism that allowed him to make the plays, was absolutely incredible. He's one of the small handful of defensive players who looked impressive playing defense, and the advanced metrics actually backed up as making an impact on defense.

    • @emmanuelenyinwa1443
      @emmanuelenyinwa1443 8 лет назад +2

      +mrmacross "and the advanced metrics actually backed up as making an impact on defense."
      No, John Stockton and Jason Kidd both have better career defensive rating than Jordan, as did teammates Pippen, Rodman, and Grant. Jordan is actually the 138th rated defensive player in NBA history. Look it up on basketball-reference.

    • @mrmacross
      @mrmacross 8 лет назад +1

      Defensive rating has some major limitations, and you shouldn't use it as a be-all, end-all stat to judge a player's defensive ability. I mean, if you're a perimeter player and you play on a terrible defensive team, you're automatically going to have an awful defensive rating. In 1985, Jordan had a pedestrian 107 D-rating. But guess what? The Bulls as a team were 110 defensive rating, so you could argue that the Bulls were already 3 points/100 possessions better with Jordan on the floor than without.
      Anyway, I never said Jordan's the best defender, and if you have to point out guys like Pippen and Rodman to put down Jordan's defense, that means you have to point out the very best defenders to find someone who compares favorably to Jordan.

    • @emmanuelenyinwa1443
      @emmanuelenyinwa1443 8 лет назад +1

      Uh, John Stockton had a MUCH higher career defensive rating. So did Jason Kidd.

    • @mrmacross
      @mrmacross 8 лет назад +1

      This is becoming pointless to discuss if you can't acknowledge that DRTG isn't a perfect stat. It's even more pointless when you bring up Stockton and his career 103.92 DRTG, which is worse than Jordan's.
      A player can affect his DRTG, but it's also a function of the team. In rare cases, like Dwight Howard, one player can anchor a bad defense to be a good one, but for perimeter players in particular, playing with bad defenders on a bad scheme is going to inflate your defensive rating.
      No one stat fully embodies a player's overall impact. And if you really love B-R's stats, why not use defensive win shares?

    • @emmanuelenyinwa1443
      @emmanuelenyinwa1443 5 лет назад

      @@michaelborchardt1527 No. I NEVER said it was. I was RESPONDING to the guy who said"advance metrics" back Jordan by pointing out the reverse is true. That advanced metrics actually show Jordan was actually a MEDIOCRE defender. Go look at his DPOY year. Hakeem Olajuwon DESTROYED him by every measure of defensive impact except media popularity--higher defensive rating, higher defensive win shares, higher defensive box plus minus. The ONLY thing Jordan had was higher steals. Because DPOY is a media given award, I tend to look at actual statistics.

    That leaning dunk by Michael Jordan in slow motion at the end of this video is a just marvelous thing to watch. He cuts off the passing lanes and intercepts the ball to start the fastbreak for an open court dunk. He sneaks from behind on the opponent and knocks the ball away. He often comes from the blind side and blocks the shot. He swats the ball from behind out of the opponent's hands as they get positioned into the post. He prys the ball away as the opponent comes down with the rebound. His offensive game is similar to a killer shark, but his defensive playing style is sneaky as a sly fox, but very effective

    8:44 is pure art.
    dude stands up to contact, knocking the ball loose, takes off running, reaches back to catch a pass, outruns two on the dribble, deeks, then goes behind the back to change direction, hesitates, crosses BACK over, beats his man, dives into paint between two trees, hangs in the air like a circus act until his shot is there, then decides to dunk bc, ya know... still above the rim, no biggie

    Many people say Pippen is a better on ball defender than MJ. Bullshit. I saw them play almost every game. Pippen actually allowed his man to score on him, regularly. Guys like Nique, Bird and Jamal Mashburn would light Scottie up. I've been watching basketball since the 60s. I've seen them all. Only Hakeem was better.

      rex waller The fact of the matter is Pippen always affected the game more defensively because of his TEAM DEFENSE. He was a very good one on one defensive player too, but it was his team/help defense that is the reason he's the greatest perimeter defensive player ofa ll time. In 1995 he was literally defending 3-4 guys on EVERY PLAY because of everyone else was such poor defensive players. With his athleticism and length he was able to get anywhere on the floor quickly. The fact of the matter is that Pippen never took a break off defensively either...his effort was absolute at all times. Jordan took plays off to rest...whether it was to save energy for offense or whatever doesn't matter.

      David In the second 3-peat, with MJ in his 30s. he often got assigned to an easier matchup because the Bulls needed MJ's offense. But during the 1st 3-peat that was not the case. MJ guarded his positional counterpart. Magic, Drexler, Dumars, Reggie Miller etc. He would often guard the best player in crunch time, including Isiah, Barkley, and Dominique. MJ was voted the top defender by the players in 7 consecutive polls from 87-93, taken annually by The Sporting News. Pippen was a top five team defender, all-time. And I admit that he was a better defender than MJ later in MJ's career. But in their prime I'd take MJ all day.

    • @BarstoolBlues33
      @BarstoolBlues33 9 лет назад +2

      rex waller The fact that Hakeem or Robinson wasn't 1 on those polls basically goes to show what a bunch of horseshit that poll was. Dream is the best defensive player of the modern era (80 to now) and was at his peak in that regard in late 80s to early 90s. Robinson is the 2nd best defensive player in the modern era and won the DPOY averaging 4.5bpg and 2.2spg...in the 92 season. The fact of the matter is, no great defensive SG will ever have more of an impact than a great defensive Center. This was a popularity contest. Realistically the top 5 in any list like that should be all centers. You don't think its a joke that Jordan was voted the best defensive player in the league when Hakeem and Robinson were around? You can't seriously believe Jordan had a bigger impact on the defense than these guys...if you do, then you clearly are being subjective and not objective or plain just don't know anything about basketball when it comes to defense.

    • @RatedRex1
      @RatedRex1 9 лет назад +3

      David The wording in the poll was, " which player do you not want defending you during the game." MJ would win by a landslide. The annual poll also asked, "which player do you not want to defend." Jordan won that one 7 consecutive years, too. I think centers are more impactful, overall. But guys like MJ, Pippen, Rodman, Khawhi Leonard, Bobby Jones can shift a game or series defensively. Personally, I think Hakeem is basketball's greatest defender. But I have MJ ranked second. Kenny Smith said that NBA teams usually started their offense on the opposite side of MJ. He was that disruptive. I remember, the Bulls won because of their defense, not their offense, even though they had no great shot blocker or intimidator.

    Shows exactly what his defence was about ; pressuring, harassing his opponents frontside but also coming from the side, and from their blindside; when you feel the Black Cat is reaching it's too late, ball is lost...

    A master at knowing where the ball was going and the supreme athleticism to get there! This is why Jordan is my favourite all time player. Stats can be manipulated, although he sits at the top of many categories. Records can be broken, although he still holds many. Winning largely depends on teammates and competition, although almost no-one is a more decorated winner than he is. But no one has ever looked this good whilst destroying the competition. No one has ever worked harder than him, every single night. We miss you Mike!

For me, it honestly was "the best of times". Hey Mike, I really do want to be like Mike. Just had to say that. We both graduated H.S. the same year, 1981. Would of loved it , if my high school basketball team could of played your's. California is a long way from So. Carolina. Rock on, Mr. Jordan !

    Jordan’s the best SG in the history of the NBA
    the best defensive SG to ever play the game
    (9 All Defense selections & 1988 Defensive Player of the year)
    he was a winner and a legend
    6x Champion
    6x Finals MVP (all-time Record)
    5x League MVP
    10x scoring leader
    When it comes to winning, Jordan’s under the same breath as a Magic Johnson a Larry Bird a Bill Russell a Julius Erving a Tim Duncan & a Wilt Chamberlain (oh & also Kareem)
    I don’t believe in who’s the greatest of all time, they were all great in their own way and had succeeded in the NBA which not too many have
