Buffering with a moisturizer that has just the right amount of occlusive ingredients (Aveeno calm and restore oat gel moisturizer) is how I was able to finally get tretinoin to play nice with my rosacea!
You are an incredibly valuable doctor AND educator! Thanks for all you do.

If you buffer it with a moisturizer, does it lessen the efficacy?

@@LemonSpeaksFrench in my experience definitely not. I use tretinoin between moisturizers and it's still extremely effective. Retinol is powerful stuff. I'd recommend waiting at least 15 minutes between steps too.

    • @LemonSpeaksFrench
      @LemonSpeaksFrench 3 года назад +4

@@missromley hey thanks! I also found out that retinol works on the upper layer of the skin so it doesn’t have to seep into deeper like moisturizers, also moisturizers help the gradual release of retinol to the skin, not surprise it with strong actives. So definitely it doesn’t affect efficacy

Dr Idriss said that applying moisturizer before the retinol buffers it, making it weaker. Does the same thing happen when applying moisturizer after retinol? At night I apply retinol after washing my face than I wait about 20-30min to let my skin full absorbed the retinol before applying my night time moisturizer. Am I weakening the retinol by doing this?

As a person who live in tropical region, which practically summer for a whole year, I don't get the perfect time to start the retinoid like the fall or winter. My derms prescribe me tretinoin from 0.25 to 0.5. Fortunately, My facial skin is quite resilience with it. In addition , since I life in South East Asia, avoiding the sun in order to not get tanned is quite a norm. So, stay indoor, wearing hat, facial mask, and umbrella is quite common and helps me adapting to tretinoin.

The Olay Retinol 24 is such a game changer for me. Been using it since early February this year and my skin texture is much more even with pores much less apparent now. I even recommended it to my brother who started using it since May and his skin is greatly improved as well. I can see why it is a best seller. It works so well as a beginner's retinol and the price is very reasonable. Here in Malaysia you can get it on sale for as little as $15-20 so I'll always buy at least 2 or 3 tubs to stock up. I would normally use it with the serum as well and so far, my skin is loving it. In fact I've been getting compliments about my skin and some even thought I'm a 20 something person! (I'll be 35 this September) Love it so much and so happy it gets the attention that it deserves! 💖 💖 💖

For the last 2 years I've been using A313 and ih has been great! Works just fine. I am 44 and my little sister, who is 31 and a lot of her friends have also started using A313. Everyone had good experience with it.
I was thinking I'm switching to something stronger but as you said: Constant usage is better than no usage. I'm satisfied with my skin and the proof of that are jealous looks and questions on what did I do and what fillers did I use for my face. No fillers, just good old A313.

Because of you, I asked my derm about Altreno. She had never heard of it and told me “you’re being sold a bill of goods”🤦🏼‍♀️ when I told her it had buffering ingredients. Whatever, she prescribed it and I LOVE it! ZERO irritation and I use it 6 nights a week (I do glycolic one night). As a night cream, I use Bioderma Atoderm. 9 hours later, and I can still feel it on my skin without clogging pores. Highly recommend for dry skinned folks! Sleeping on a silk pillowcase also helps as Cotton absorbs product.

Medical resident here, I watched a couple of Doc Idriss' videos where she said a Niacinamide serum may help with the situation. I have oily acne-prone skin and even though Doc has said skip the moisturizer, I found moisturizer has actually helped with the mascne. I also recommend using a KN94 mask, some Korean brands have reusable ones that you can soak in soapy water (I use a bit of bleach tbh) so you can reuse them 5-20x (depending on the brand and wear and tear). The KN94s are far less irritating than the single use surgical face masks. The most well-known KN94 brands Ilwoul or AirQueen are a bit pricey, but there are off-brand ones that work just as well as IW and AQ.

I have dry cheeks and sometimes oily in the t zone, rosacea, and somewhat sensitive skin. It comes and goes. ( I have noticed that differin has actually made my skin come forth with more oil.) Best retinol I´ve ever used is the skinceuticals 0.5. It´s just phenomenal but expensive with an 80/90 euro price tag. I´ve used prescription 0.25 and I prefer the skinceuticals because the added ingredients make my face glow and it even fades away nasolabial lines. I am looking for a less expensive dupe though!

Very interesting timing Dr. Shereene! I ran out of the La Roche Posay retinol serum ($40) I was using and needed to replace it but money is a bit tight. My local pharmacy had a small sample size container of the Olay retinol 24 in the travel section ($6) so I decided to try it. I agree with your review. It is very gentle and I have been able to bring it down to my chest. The cream is also nice and hydrating.

I'm using First Aid Beauty Skin Lab Retinol Serum 0.25% which was recommended by Dr Idriss in one of her retinol videos. I would highly recommend this one. No. 7 is great and helped ease me into tretinoin. Still I had to 1. buffer and 2. avoid chemical exfoliators (caused chemical burns on my face) and B3 (vitamin C in the morning was surprisingly OK). My skin became incredibly sensitive even though there was no peeling or “purging”. The composition of moisturizer I used to buffer at night was critical. I went for glycerin, squalene, shea butter and nothing much else, despite my having combination skin (la roche possay toleraine ultra cream). It took a while to figure out that niacinamide was the culprit making my skin feel like it was on fire. So introduce ingredients gradually. It was hellish trying to figure out what was causing the reaction. 7 months later I can use niacinamide again and AHAs (5% toner)/BHAs (2% toner) and I’ve been on tretinoin for 5 months going up to 0.05. It’s all been a long process but worth it.

I am a retinol beginner so I loved to hear that fall is the best time to start a retinol routine! This week will be my third and final week of mixing retinol with my moisturizer twice a week. Next week I will do test patches on my face, neck and chest. Then apply the moisturizer. I've heard it's a good idea to put retinol on and then wait at least 20 minutes before applying moisturizer. Is that true? I did learn that I should be using retinol on the back of my hands! That makes sense. Thank you, Dr. Idriss for your awesome RUclips videos. Please go more in depth about the percentage of Centella Asiatica in these products. Purito has always been my go to (and the results are actually amazing), but I do not think the percentage of Centella asiatica in their products means what we, as consumers, think it means. If Centella Asiatica is formulated in a complex, the percentage in the complex might be e.g. 50% but if the percentage of the complex in the entire formulation is e.g. 10% the overall percentage in the product is 5%. The percentage of the complex in the entire product is usually difficult to find out.

I hope G&G get super popular so they open in the US because to get “free shipping” I have to order $70 at a time 🤷‍♀️I want to try their new product but I didn’t finish anything yet from my last order

I have been using the Olay Retinol24 Moisturiser, Serum and Eye Cream 6 nights a week. And then use Tretinoin 1 night a week. Seems to be working out great so far. The Olay makes my skin feel really soft. I will be ramping up the Tretinoin usage as my skin gets used to the ingredients.

Such an informative video. Thank you. For some reasons i never get attracted to Olay. I always feel its rubbish. I haven’t changed into any other brand other than ordinary when it comes to ingredients. Roc is actually very good for retinols.

I love LOVE watching your videos! I am just now figuring out my skincare journey at 32, thanks in no small part to your information. I’m dipping my toes into the retinoid game, because I know they can be transformative, but I would love to hear your take on in-office procedures like lasers and peels. Part of me wonders if I should just go for something a little more drastic if I want to see major improvements. And along those lines, I would love to hear what you think about hair removal techniques. Thank you for educating us on so many skin care topics! You are a smart, driven, lovely woman and loads of people respect your work!

Hi Dr Shereen Idriss, i just started retinol for 6 weeks but i decided to stop for a while because my face got breakout. Lately i just found out that there are some ingredients that can not be used at the same time. Like retinol with aha bha pha, retinol with vit C. I would love to hear more about this from you. I Love you 😘😘❤

Can I use this Olay retinol moisturizer daily at night? I'm currently using it in 1-day-gap frequency.
    I have oily, sensitive skin.
Am a fan of your videos.

I live in Florida and I use The Ordinary Granactive 2% Retinoid Emulsion 5 days per week and on Sundays and Wednesdays I’ve moved up to their Ratinal 2%. I had zero interest in trying any of their retinols in squalane, so my only choice was going from the granactive retinoid to their retinal emulsion. No irritation as of yet, so I might move to using the retinal 3 days and hopefully be able to use nightly. My entire routine is all The Ordinary. I use their squalane cleanser both day and night, and during the day I use their multi-peptide + copper serum with their aloe + NAG serum on top. NO true moisturizer over here and my skin does fine bc I’m giving it all the nutrients it could ever need for the retinal/lids to do their thing and allow my face to hydrate itself, essentially. I do have the beta glucan moisturizer, but personally, it’s too thick. Anyway, just thought I’d share.

There is another derm in RUclips said and promoted that retinol should be applied until your skin become red, flake, like inflamed to get the result. So, I am so scared to try as in my country, seeing derm is soo expensive, i don’t know to what extend is normal for my skin. Glad to watch your video and find something to start with.

it is a marathon not a sprint..take it slowly.. as long as you're consistent..if you rush and your skin gets irritated because you overdid it, you'd have to wait again until your skin barrier gets repaired.

I'm using the Pixi retinol toner and their retinol serums. I also have their glycolic acid toner and serums. I will use them up and see how I feel about repurchasing. They do make me a bit itchy for a while, but then my skin calms down. So far so good, but I've only used them like 3x each in the past month, rotating the glycolic acid and retinol.

Could you talk about if foods really do cause breakouts and how? When I was in college I tried to research published works about dairy and acne since that’s one claim I had heard, but there was no significant data about it. So, what do you know about diet and skin (positive and negative effects)??

You can try the laneige sleeping mask. This works amazingly for me i wear it right before sleeping and my lips are so much more hydrated and plumped. Also you can exfoliate it off w a wet cloth in the morning. Always wear spf on your lips ofc and like even simple Vaseline can work great. I heard the kosas lip balms really good. I've tried nipple balm on my lips, it works so good espescially if your lips are cracked and dry. The palmers coco butter swivel stick is really nice for your lips, knees anywhere dry it'll sooth and soften the area with contious use, i like it a lot. Check out the summer fridays lip balm, kopari, the rose vegan lip balm and the curel ones. To exfoliate, you can use a gentle lip scrub even the lush ones seem fine for me.

The No. 7 seems to have piqued my interest. My favourite drugstore retinols so far are the CeraVe resurfacing serum and the Neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair moisturizer. They are gentle but very effective and they have Dr Dray's stamp of approval - which is how I found out about them. Lol. I use tret on my face but I can't tolerate it on my neck and chest so that's when these drugstore alternatives come into play.

My first retinol was A313, my skin like it even if it is sensitive and dry. My neck don't like it as much, it becomes itchy. I am not sure if here in Sweden we have any tretinoin type of retinols.🤔 What would you suggest for my skin as a next step? Thanks in advance! 🙌💞
