  • We're sure most horse enthusiasts have heard of the Lipizzan Horses or may have seen a performance from a traveling performance show. But did you know they are an endangered breed? From the HorseTV Global Archives we bring a story of a concerted effort to increase the number of these horses in the world.

Saw them perform in Austria. It was a dream for me to lay my eyes them after seeing them ridden and perform in a movie starring Robert Taylor.

Such beautiful horses. I had the pleasure of riding them when on a holiday in Lipica many years ago. Truly gorgeous horses to ride. I will also always remember the wonderful sight of the herd of mares and foals being driven loose, through the village from daytime to night time pastures. Awesome. 😍😍😍

I've seen them perform in Vienna and in Canada. But I much preferred the Vienna show!! They are magnificent horses to watch!! Thank goodness for Mr. Podhajsky and Gen. Patton! Because without them, we might not have these beautiful horses performing today. My first riding instructor had been classically trained by Mr. Podhajsky. And that's how I learned how to ride. Unfortunately missed them when they were left around here in 2012 in Ohio and I wish I had all my heart I wish I'd gone to see him because my mom saw him and she lives in Washington state I think she still have about 2002 .

What about the ones that were sent to South Africa during WWII? The
South African Lippizanner School is the only recognised school in the world outside of Vienna, and there are stringent standards. Lippizanners are also bred in South Africa. Don't know which blood lines.
Disappointed that this wasn't mentioned in this documentary.

Stallions are gelded and sold to good homes, so are mares . I was told that when I was there in the early nineties.

disappointing. thought they'd be an exhibition. also, feel bad for horses as their mating [stallion sessions] is too controlled by humans! not natural! but their dancing [horses] are wonderful to watch! so smart

Even desert Arabians now control breeding. These horses are too valuable to risk injury from the wrong mare or stallion.

Yes they are beautiful and graceful. But that horse there showing when they're training it and all that drool coming out of its mouth that's fear that's nerves and I don't like that. I had horses and I trained a lot when they start doing that they're very nervous and scared.
