Catherine Hoke describes the program she started in 2010 that “transform the hustle” of formerly incarcerated men and women. Her non profit has produced groundbreaking results, including a recidivism rate of less than five percent, and an employment rate of 95%. After being given a second chance of her own, Catherine founded Defy Ventures, a national nonprofit organization that “transforms the hustle” of currently and formerly incarcerated people. Defy has produced groundbreaking results, including a recidivism rate of less than 5%, and an employment rate of 95%. Defy’s vision is to end mass incarceration by using entrepreneurship as a tool to transform legacies and human potential.
Catherine was named a #MakeTechHuman Agent of Change by WIRED and Nokia for being one of “17 Global Influencers Expanding Human Possibility Through Technology.” Catherine also received the MDC Partners Humanitarian Award on behalf of Defy Ventures (2015). She was named by Fast Company as one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business (2014) and is an Ashoka Fellow (2013). I am a Defy Ventures graduate, Catherine Hoke actually undersells the impact of Defy on its EITs. It was the most incredible experience ever. Defy took an ex-con and gave me back my humanity

This woman is amazing. I wish she would give a TEDx talk on why she is so successful; how she keeps rising from every crisis, and what makes big money so attracted to her. She is such an effective steward...
We do not understand the laws of money. Some people are not taught financial independence and how to make it work for us.
We are all humans and we err. It is very brave of you to share your story and humble yourself. I have always admired people not for their success but for their ability to lower themselves and admit to their failures.
I was given such opportunity when I hadn't earned it. I was tracked with wonderful students, though I didn't know it. I almost flunked out of college in my freshman year, I was SO embarrassed! I fell into friendship with people from my public school, and they taught me how to get better grades, it took me over half a year but I earned straight A's. I was fortunate, because I could have failed, probably predicted by others to fail. And I became a good parent and a decent employee, and I'm happy. When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, John Lennon said, "HAPPY,"

I've now had the privilege of attending a Defy event on three different occasions. All three were powerful, honest, and transformational experiences. We really can make a difference!
Catherine, this is my first time learning about you. I would love to become more like you. I have been in a much different kind of prison; the prison of a low self image. Maybe if I had the right mentoring, learning to serve people the way you do would set me free. :-)
