Thanks for posting this. My budget requires that I do this with help from a couple of friends, We're deciding this week on the color of the shingles,. What color did you choose? The Malarkey color chart is difficult to compare. Those guys are great workers, like the two of you. It really looks like a house now and I get some vicarious pleasure from seeing your joy.
I believe our shingles are "storm gray." We're really happy with the look of them. Yes, it was so cool to watch these shingles go up! Even though we are glad we farmed this job out, I think you will be able to do this yourself. Once you understand the process and the order of overlapping shingles, it is just a lot of lifting and cutting. It will definitely be a job but you'll be able to make it work. I hope your friends are strong!
There is an ERROR in the shingles!!! Where one triangle meets an other THERE IS A BULGE. These shingles will break bearing ice and snow. I worked in a campus in upstate New York in the snowbelt Doing mineral shingles, half lap and full lap. Aluminium Steel and slate roofing On the change of angle the shingles SHOULD HAVE BEEN SLIT ON AN ANGLE AND Real silicone should have been put on the back of that angle cut to support the weight and hold the shingle so it would not then split. As is you can see the BUBBLE created on the bends of the panels What work we saw in these 60+ angled roofing joints; which in a year or two all would begin to break up and leak.
Thanks for the comment. Leaking is definitely something we've been worried about from the beginning. This technique for roofing the dome is what Natural Spaces Domes has used and recommended for decades, so hopefully they have figured it out and it will work long term. They specifically avoid using the caulking method because apparently that seems to fail over time. In case you are curious, here is a link to their website where they talk about roofing geodesic domes. naturalspacesdomes.com/learning-center/roofing/
Fascinating! I was wondering what/how this part of the build was to be done. I'm really glad you contracted this portion out. Looking great guys. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to my favorite self-builders on RUclips.
Thank you! Yes, we went back and forth deciding whether to spend the money to get this done, and I'm glad we did. Enjoy the rest of 2024 and Happy New Year to you too!
Wow! before you know it, you'll be working on the finishing touches inside and you'll have to do more gardening content :)
I can't wait to have more time to focus on the garden!

Out of curiosity - is there different specs for installation in an area that doesn't get but a dusting of snow per year?

@arkyartist - As far as we know, this is the same technique used across the board. I hope we did it right!
