How To Shingle A Geodesic Dome Roof - Part Two
Ever wonder how rectangular architectural shingles could fit on the roof of a geodesic dome house? Take a look, because we are finally getting Malarkey shingles on our dome! We've been working toward this step in the construction of our dome for so long, and it is finally happening! We hired out this step of our dome build and that was a good move. Watch as the experts put up 50-year Malarkey architectural asphalt shingles.

Putting Up The Porch Wall And Getting Roof Ready!
Просмотров 886Месяц назад
We put up another wall on this week's DIY geodesic dome house build! This time, it was our porch entrance. Figuring out how to put up a straight wall next to a curved dome is no easy feat! We also got word that the roofers are finally on their way! That meant we needed to do some final prep work to get the roof ready for asphalt shingles. We put two more holes in the roof for the bathroom vent ...
Door Deconstruction And Mulling Two Windows!

On this week's DIY geodesic dome house build, we cut out our door frame header and re-sized the rough opening to make room for our future insulated floor. We do it nice 'cuz we do it twice! We also mulled (joined) two Marvin Elevate windows into one. This means we finally put in the last window on our two-story extension! Exciting news! We now have two affiliate links for you! We Have Windows! Our Dome Now Has A Room With A View

Windows all around! We installed four sets of Marvin Elevate windows into our geodesic dome's two-story extension. With just the two of us, installing some very big (9 feet long and 5 feet tall) windows took a bit of ingenuity (and our trusty skid steer) but as always, we figured it out! We also managed to install our first exterior door for the dome, putting us one step closer to getting our d...
Velux Skylight Install...And Almost Getting Stuck On The Roof!
Просмотров 653Месяц назад
Our DIY geodesic dome house build is moving along! We installed a pair of Velux skylights on the two-story extension roof and that completed the roof work for the entire dome! Now that the roof is fully protected, we have just a few more gaping window holes to address next. Oh, and we threw in some chicken-sitting highlights just for fun. Encourage Brian to get chickens in the comments!
Drip, Zip, Grace, And A Graceland Wanna Be

Our DIY geodesic dome house build construction continues! This week we had to pivot to drip edge installation and zip tape for our two-story extension roof sheathing. We had an unexpected American Kestrel bird rescue from inside the dome and then shifted to Grace Ice And Water Shield for the roof. To keep things interesting, we had an Elvis day and it became very clear that neither of us has a ...

Skylight Switch-Up And A Window That Didn't Fit...Dome Build Woes!
Looks amazing
Thank you! We are pretty happy with how it turned out!
Buen trabajo🎉
Thanks!
We built our NS Dome a few years ago, hired out the shingling. Took us a while to find someone who wanted the job. He & one helper took all summer! My perspective moving forward... since the building is now dry, you could start interior insulation & panels. The siding can wait until warmer weather. Just a suggestion. Peace!
We've watched your videos for inspiration, so thanks! We're glad these guys worked out so well. It definitely was harder to find a willing roofer. You are spot on with our plans. We lined up a spray foam company so as soon as our extrusions for electrical/plumbing are done, we'll move forward with that. Our Tyvek wrap has been on our exterior for a while now though, so we do need to get that covered before it starts to fail. By the way, please feel free to share any insights! We love the input and ideas!
I've done a few roof but just enough to hate cuts. Someone who's done a lot of it just thinks of them as part of the job. But that's a lot of cuts on your dome and I mean a LOT!.
Yes for sure! We originally thought about doing a metal roof. After thinking about how many cuts that would require through metal, we opted for the shingles. Could you imagine fighting through angled metal cuts like that? The shingles were hard enough!
@@trippyacres And the edges. I don't think it would be worth the time invested to get the edges where you wouldn't get cut.
Those guys are good at their job, that's not an easy one.
You are 100% correct. I have new appreciation for roofers!
Thank for sharing the videos. I have been blessed to be able to drive by and see the progress from the road. Looks great!
Neat! Thanks for the comment!
I thought insulation would be before any interior work. Those guys did a great job.
That's right. We plan on doing spray foam insulation before any framing will go up. There is lots to do before we start that step!
Looks awesome!
Thanks! We're really happy with how it turned out!
That’s a lot of progress for a Trippy Acres episode! 😂 🤙
It's amazing the amount of work that can be done when we aren't doing it. :)
So exciting! Your Smurf plop has gotten so couth!
Indeed! It's coming along!
Your dome looks beautiful and the roofers did an excellent job. Thanks for all the details on the roofing. I'm currently immersed in the basement issues and my dome and basement ICCF will be delivered in April. You'll be enjoying views from the cupola while I'll still be trying to get weathered in.
Wow...April will be here before you know it! 2025 is going to be an adventure for you for sure! One small thing to note for your shingles, if you have a cupola, make sure the roofers treat that roof like they would the other triangles with overlaps instead of ridge cap shingles. It was fine that our guys used them up there but that meant we ran out and had to get more ridge cap shingles for the extensions. Good luck getting ready for the delivery!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Love it! Your Dome has an Excellent look, now with that beautiful roof. When the siding is done it will look Awesome ! Congrats !
Thank you! Those shingles turned out great. I'm anxious to get that siding up too. We've been trying to decide color, style, etc., so hopefully we will start that soon!
It really taking shape with the shingles goin up! Stay Safe & Stay Warm!
Thanks! It's been so cold here we've definitely taken a pause. Hopefully it will warm up soon!
Your Dome looks amazing! Well done!
Thank you! Now we just have to get the siding up to finish the exterior!
I cannot believe you have made it so far
It's taken over a year, but we finally got the roof on!
Looks so good!! I'm glad you hired out for this one too.... let their mother's worry about them for once.
I'm glad we hired this part out too! That would have been a huge challenge for the two of us. Just like when we hired out the foundation pour, shingles are another step that I'm ok with not doing ourselves.
Another day... Another week of OSHA violations!! Cheers!
Well, yep, that about sums it up!
Thanks for bringing us along for the ride!
It was quite a year! Hopefully 2025 will be just as memorable!
I get you Trippy-I give my 4Runner a pat everytime I go into the garage!
Part three left me smiling like the first two. I also love your skid steer. I have a New Holland 25S tractor which I need for mowing and the front loader, but it only handles a max of 1,000 lbs. A TOOL/Machine like your skid steer would be perfect, but at this point stuff is getting expensive and my tool budget has been slashed.
When we first moved here, we debated between a tractor and a skid steer (getting both was out of the budget and now things are just crazy). We are really glad we went the skid steer route. It sure would be nice to have a tractor though...maybe some day :)
Some people say glass half full Some say half empty Engineer says Glass Too Big 😅😅
Or..."need new toy to measure how full glass really is" :)
Or at half capacity :)
So, if the Dome doesn't work out (which I don't think it will), you can still perform as comedians. You are wonderful!
I'm not sure how many people would appreciate our corny humor! :)
Good golly- you guys better get back to the dome. There is snow forecast! Oh. Wait! Before you all left, there were shingles going up. Hope they finished before you started the vacay. ENJOY if you're still there and stay warm if you aren't. Love the crazy dances, lyrics (call them Mondegreens here) and Whitesnake reference. They go along with the crazy lines.
Thanks! We're back to "try to stay warm" because it is very cold here :) Thankfully, the shingles are indeed up. You'll see that next week!
Holidays over back to work. LOL
Yes indeed! We're trying to get back into build mode!
That's a big dome!
Yes, it's definitely bigger than we originally thought!
Part 2 was just as much fun as Part 1, and now there's going to be a Part 3! BTW, I not only know about Whitesnake, I have repeated a joke over the years from Jay Leno who invoked their name: "You can tell when your parents are getting older and their hearing is not as good as it used to be. When you go over to visit them they have the audio from Wheel of Fortune cranked up like their listening to a Whitesnake concert". Looks like you're visiting a warmer climate and having non-dome building fun there.
Yes, we enjoyed a "palm tree Christmas" this year. It was a nice change of scenery!
I love your videos... but not of fan of "best of" but you did a good job.... Just a humble fan's opinion
Thanks for the comment. Well, get ready for part three and part four :) Then we'll be back to the build next week!
Hilarious! Thanks for the laughs. I'm looking forward to part Deux. Happy New Year.
Yeah, going through the videos from the past year was definitely fun for us to see both our dome's progress and our antics along the way. Happy New Year!
Another Kiwi says Happy New Year to you both.
Happy New Year to you as well!
Ya might not have finished but you sure achieved towards those goals and the best part?? all the wildlife you interacted with! and wild times with the pivot master.
Yeah, those owls were definitely a highlight!
There's zero chance Brian does not have ADHD (I say this as someone who was recently diagnosed myself). Highly intelligent, risk taker... I'm very afraid of heights myself but I'm impressed with your ability, Brian. Love how you two work together. You seem like good sorts. Stay safe and healthy and happy new year from me in New Zealand.
Ah yes. I'm pretty sure I don't need a test to confirm that. :) Thanks, Eddie! Happy New Year to you as well!
Y'all sure got a lot done for just 2 people, respect 💯
Thank you! It's never enough, but looking back, we definitely made some progress!
Definitely agile enough to be a monkey! A belated happy birthday, Brian!
Thanks! I hope I make it to another birthday without falling! :)
You two make me smile. My brother was like Brian as a kid - up the top of the highest tree. Me - I'm terrified of heights.
We definitely wouldn't be able to do this if either of us were afraid of heights. If your brother can do it, so can you!
Huge milestone. Congrats!
Thank you! It definitely is!
There is an ERROR in the shingles!!! Where one triangle meets an other THERE IS A BULGE. These shingles will break bearing ice and snow. I worked in a campus in upstate New York in the snowbelt Doing mineral shingles, half lap and full lap. Aluminium Steel and slate roofing On the change of angle the shingles SHOULD HAVE BEEN SLIT ON AN ANGLE AND Real silicone should have been put on the back of that angle cut to support the weight and hold the shingle so it would not then split. As is you can see the BUBBLE created on the bends of the panels What work we saw in these 60+ angled roofing joints; which in a year or two all would begin to break up and leak.
Out of curiosity - is there different specs for installation in an area that doesn't get but a dusting of snow per year?
Thanks for the comment. Leaking is definitely something we've been worried about from the beginning. This technique for roofing the dome is what Natural Spaces Domes has used and recommended for decades, so hopefully they have figured it out and it will work long term. They specifically avoid using the caulking method because apparently that seems to fail over time. In case you are curious, here is a link to their website where they talk about roofing geodesic domes. naturalspacesdomes.com/learning-center/roofing/
@arkyartist - As far as we know, this is the same technique used across the board. I hope we did it right!
Ooo I love the roofing so far it’s beautiful
Thank you! We're really happy with it.
Great job roofers & Happy New Year Folks from New Zealand.
Happy New Year to you as well!
Wow! before you know it, you'll be working on the finishing touches inside and you'll have to do more gardening content :)
I can't wait to have more time to focus on the garden!
Thanks for posting this. My budget requires that I do this with help from a couple of friends, We're deciding this week on the color of the shingles,. What color did you choose? The Malarkey color chart is difficult to compare. Those guys are great workers, like the two of you. It really looks like a house now and I get some vicarious pleasure from seeing your joy.
I believe our shingles are "storm gray." We're really happy with the look of them. Yes, it was so cool to watch these shingles go up! Even though we are glad we farmed this job out, I think you will be able to do this yourself. Once you understand the process and the order of overlapping shingles, it is just a lot of lifting and cutting. It will definitely be a job but you'll be able to make it work. I hope your friends are strong!
What a progress at the end of the year! Happy New Year to you!
Thanks! Yes, this was an exciting step. Happy New Year to you as well!
Fascinating! I was wondering what/how this part of the build was to be done. I'm really glad you contracted this portion out. Looking great guys. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to my favorite self-builders on RUclips.
Thank you! Yes, we went back and forth deciding whether to spend the money to get this done, and I'm glad we did. Enjoy the rest of 2024 and Happy New Year to you too!
I can say for sure but I've seen "Ladybugs" like that before. They're some other kind of beetle and are invasive. Took my pest guy a couple months to get rid of them.
Yeah, I think they are Asian beetles. They stink too! It's amazing how many of them show up!
I love innuendos!
I’m sure he will find something to build with all his toys 😂😂😂😂.
No doubt about that! :)
Thanks for the update. I have decided against the metal roofing and will be using the same shingles that you are. My tractor only lifts about 800lbs comfortably and I'll need to rent a fork lift to off-load the pallets. Do you know how much each shingle pallet weighs? You skid steer was able to handle it pretty well. Thanks.
I'm not 100% sure but each bundle was around 60ish pounds (maybe 70). I was pretty much at my limit with two of the pallets as they were around 3100 pounds each. Not sure if you remember but when we unloaded, my ass end came up when I first tried to pick up one of those pallets. After we unloaded the truck, one of the main hydraulic cylinders started to leak and I hadn't done any crazy lifting with it since then. So yeah, unless NSD could break them down into smaller pallets, I'd rent something and break their stuff. :)
@@trippyacres Thanks very much for that assessment. A rental is what I will do.
Just keep up the fun building. Have a Merry Christmas folks.
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you as well :)
Thanks for putting the smile on my face and into my heart ❤😊
Aww...thanks :)
Another submission for "New Tools for Brian": Get an electric hand planer for when you need to trim a smidge off the end because its too long.
I love this idea! Would be a lot easier and quicker! (And I get another fun TOOL!) :)
I hate to admit it, but that really is a good idea ;)
