A bigger sensor with bigger pixels is great for low light video but daytime video will suffer the ability to retain details when cropped because manufacturers tend to use bigger pixels instead of using more pixels for more resolution 😭

They said that the Mavic 3 has a 200mbps videobitrate. Air2S uses 150mbps at h265 codec. I looked at the microsd cards that DJI recommended for the Mavic 3 and it said that the h264 codec is used for high video bitrate. As you know, h265 offers smaller file sizes with the same quality. In other words, I think that 200mbps h264 video in Mavic3 and 150mbps h265 video quality in Air2S will be the same. I would appreciate if you compare the video file sizes.
For me the day and night time footage of the Mavic 3 is amazing!!!!
Both drones have 20MP sensors. So both can produce the same resolution.
In the case of M3, video resolution is limited by software not by magic fading of pixels as their surface increases.
Perhaps the reduction in resolution has something to do with the crop needed for digital stabilization.
Or something related to insufficient hardware performance.
Anyway, DJI is unlikely to increase the video resolution in the upcoming updates because the specification did not provide it from the beginning.
Maybe they will improve the video quality a bit with greater sharpness and some exposition fixes, but I would not count on more
@@TheRapTrue I don't know whether increasing sharpness will resolve this, its looks like an image definition/clarity issue.

The reason the Mavic 3 example video isn't showing much reflections in the water is that the wind kicked up making the water surface rough. The Air 2S has smooth water with little wind. Easily seen. All other observations I agree on.

It’s nice to see a truly honest review. Too many of the drone RUclipsrs are DJI fanboys and aren’t being honest about Mavic 3 problems. You are the opposite of the Billy Kyle type reviewer, which I appreciate!!! I have both Evo 2 pro and Mavic 2 pro and will stick with E2P. Thanks for telling it like it is, good, bad, and ugly!!!
I can’t stand Billy Kyle’s videos haha. They’re so forced and one sided.
The fixed aperture is actually making the drone harder to use. If you think that it’s easier then why not just pretend that Mavic 3 has a fixed aperture too. You aren’t required to change it. With a fixed aperture you have to constantly change ND filters and that’s not convenient because you have to land the drone first

Good RUclipsLive Xavier. Quick and directly to the point. I like the Air 2S but will most likely replace it, NOT with a Mavic 3, but with an Evo Lite+. I have the Evo 2 Pro 6k and had the original Evo. I suppose I’m a rare breed but I like Autel over DJI drones. And you are one of a very few RUclips influencers that gives Autel a fair chance, which I greatly appreciate.

@@xavier_arthur I fly lighthouses up and down the East Coast. The ability to snap photos while shooting a video means I can carry fewer batteries along. Sometimes I’m only going to have one opportunity to get the video & photos I want, and Autel gives me the best chance when all is said & done.

@@RoyHarperLighthouseGuy Good point on photos. I also like the PIV feature. I had it set to snap photos at 30 sec. intervals, recently changed to 60 sec. The auto photos during video capture are a great documentation of flights and the flight logs will show all the positions they were captured at for review. That said I am planning some lighthouse shoots over the winter, but I'll pack the M3 along with Evo 2 Pro, probably Air 2 as well (not S, I skipped that update when I realized it was fixed Aperture. It's a big upgrade from Air 2, in terms of camera, but I think it's the ugliest drone I've ever seen. Not just awkward styling, it's offensive to me for whatever reason... I might crash it flying VLOS with my eyes closed, lol!
Wow, I really hope this is something that can be corrected with a software update. I know a lot people invested in the Mavic 3 due to DJI’s amazing track record. I personally will be revisiting the idea of purchasing this drone in January. I’m not in a rush. I am very happy with what I already own.

I've owned both the Air 2S and the Mavic 3. While it is true that the characteristics of the cameras are not simply that the Micro 4/3 sensor is superior in every single respect under every circumstance, still there is a considerable increase in overall image quality on the Mavic 3. I would not go back to the Air 2S. Pilot Institute did a 'torture test' on the two drones several months ago and the Air 2s did hold up with detail relatively better than the Mavic 3. However, my concern is landscape photography and video.
Mavic 3 Photos are crushing the Air 2s and EVO cameras.

I knew I wasn't the only one that felt the M3 was a bit lack luster. It's good, but I feel it's a bit overrated for the price. I honestly still fly my Air2s most of the time. If that January upgrade isn't out of this world, then I'm selling my M3 and putting my money toward something more useful.

Great vid boss! Way to go on the detailed comparison of true image quality. For all the pros the M3 offer there are still quite a few draw backs too. Pretty happy with my A2s, it looks to be way more durable! Looking forward to your review of Autel 3s new line up. Hopefully they can bring some improvements/refinements over the M3 since they are releasing behind dgi.
Budget-wise, the Air2S will not fail you but if you can go all-out then by all means, go for the Mavic 3!

My thought exactly. I think his M3 has a focus issue. There's no way .3K less resolution should ever look that bad. He says it himself. It's night and day. Even my Evo 2 Pro comparisons did not have the M3 with what looks like a focusing issue. He should exchange it to see. It's his money and B&H will happily exchange it.

Astonishing review, I'm sure you will stir up all the hyperbolic DJI fanboys with this assessment.
I own a M3 too, and to say I'm disappointed with the image clarity/definition is an understatement, given the money I paid for this unit.
Whilst manual settings might deliver a slightly different outcome, obviously I'm hoping these image quality issues can be resolved with firmware updates as I have skin in the game.
For image clarity/definition the Evo 2 Pro leaves the M3 for dead.

Why is the water in the A2S footage smooth as glass & the M3 footage of the water shows definitely not like glass? Confused & just never compare anything in full auto myself. What aperture did the M3 choose? Thanks for posting.

Wow, this is really something else. The comparison against the (now "old") Evo 2 Pro made the Mavic 3 look a bit dicey, but this makes it look outright ridiculous. DJI better get their act together for the supposed firmware update in January. If they delay that, people will be in the streets with torches and pitchforks.

I totally agree with all of the sentiments expressed in this video. Newer sometimes does not mean better. It's like night and day. The contrast and sharpness of the images are clearly different
I totally agree with the quality of the video. When I first saw the video on RUclips I was very disappointed in the sharpness. I would say my Mavic Air 2 has better sharpness.

He didn't use the Tele lens. He cropped in post. I strongly believe he has a focus defect on his M3. NY comparisons have been nothing like this.

I can hardly wait to see your autel lite comparison to the air 2s. I've narrowed down to these two at this point.
Xavier is one influencer you can trust to give Autel a fair shake. Too many other RUclipsrs are complete DJI fanboys. I’m likely replacing my Air 2S with the Lite+.
It would be interesting to see this again with the new Mavic 3 upgrades.

I have been holding off on my first drone purchase for a few reasons.
1. I would like to see a review on the FIMI x8 se 2022. It is only a half inch, but it has remote id and it should handle adverse weather fairly well.
2. Autel. If I am going to fork out over $1,000 on a drone, it better be a relevant product for more than just a couple of years. I expect remote id to be on the Autel products, and the cameras look like they are taking aim right at DJI.
3. I keep seeing reviews from folks on the Mavic 3, that are not that great. I mean when you are looking at 3K for the fly more combo, and 5K give or take for their special, it should be 100% ready to go perfect out of the box. I keep calling it a half baked drone. I agree, maybe it is something in the firmware that needs fixing, but who knows.
4. Waypoints. Not just hyperlapse but waypoint flying for repeatable flight paths. Autel, and Fimi have them. Not sure about the Air 2S or even Air 2, and we don't have any of that functionality yet on the 3.
5. Geofencing. If you live or fly in an area where it isn't a big deal it won't be a bother, but I don't like being told where I can and can not fly. I am a responsible pilot, so I will do my homework for the area I am flying and get approvals that fall under my 107 license. Other than hacking the firmware, there is no way to turn this off on DJI drones.
I'm a Fimi fan, and have flown all of their products. They are a small company, smaller than Autel, but have done well with the resources they have. Trust me when I say their Waypoint software is basically unusable. Undocumented, the POI has no adjustable parameters and it is essentially crap. Autel, while not perfect has extremely granular control over Waypoint Missions, even if a few things are broken it is quite usable. Sharing from someone who's put hundreds of hours with both companies drones.
@@BlairAir Although to be fair FIMI is like a 1/3 of the cost of the other guys, so there is that cost factor involved. Autel is looking really attractive to save up for. I might grab a FIMI just to start with and get my confidence up.
@@dan8402 I think Fimi is just about a perfect first drone. (X8SE 2020 or 2022, NOT X8 Mini, obviously 🙄) It's way above toy class, full sized and has most of the autonomous stuff to play with. A great controller design (can fit an iPad mini with no add on. If they keep the price near the 2020, I paid 550-ish for a 2 battery and soft bag, then bought a hard case with 4 battery rapid charger, and 2 more batteries. That plus filters and I was set. I have kept it even after selling off stuff to raise funds for Mavic 3. It's weather proof too. Not that I would fly in a downpour. DroneXfactor ONLY flies the Fimi when weather tries to keep him grounded! Good luck whatever you decide!

I have to admit; this surprised me quite a bit. I do hope this can be fixed in firmware updates to the M3 and it still has a great flight characteristics and flight time. You're right Xavier; this bird was rushed to market too soon and of course we all know why (Christmas). It's not unprecedented. Autel did the same thing with the E2. Hubsan with just about every drone. Sometimes I think these companies do this to use the end user as tester's. Microsoft has done just that with the Windows OS's forever. The fact is the companies can't test for everything. Sometimes it takes the customers with a critical eye to find these faults like you did here. I dunno; maybe they hope people won't notice. It sure makes the M2P and P4P look good right about now though.
It’s July 2022 and the major firmware update to the Mavic 3 has finally been shot down the tube … it would be nice to see a new comparison of the m3 and the Air2s again…. I have the Air2s and I love the thing but I would like to also purchase the mavic 3 also ….great comparison
Not sure for your drone. But my M3 looks great. Because it is not as oversharpened as the Air2S, but the image is still crisp. And if ou want it to look like the oversharpened Air2S, just add some sharpening. We fighted for years with DJI begging them not to oversharpen the drone footage out of the box - and that is what they, thank god, finally did. So try adding some sharpening in your Davinci and see if that helps. If not, check if your bird has a focus issue. And by the way: your reflection you keep talking about: That's not the sensor of M3 not getting it. It's just less, due to the wind making waves.
Nice comparison, I own fpv and I feel that dji isnt taking care on firmwares anymore fpv need some little thinks to be great but as I saw they will prefer to launch a new drone the same with air2 and 8k hyperlapse they never corrected and there is a drone unfinished. So why expecting will be great in firmware if recently they dont care

I’m I the only one who knows this…. DJI is holding out on their crazy new updates. It’s smart. Wait for Autel to release theirs flagship… Then DJI will release mind blowing functionality and imagery after the fact. It’s smart. Autel will have no idea. At that time. It will be too late. Why would DJI release the Mavic 3 early? So other manufacturers will think they will have DJI beat.. Then DJI will update and blow everything out of the water. Ps, I still love my Air2s better. $$. Your comment assumes Autel incapable of firmware updates. As someone who has and does own Autel drones i assure you such is not the case. Also, as I look at the Nano & Lite drones, I think the Evo 2 series of drones will continue to be Autel’s flagship drones for the immediate future.

A great review and really helps the Air2S's credibility- I think the 2S was a money grab, but a win win for both and in need of a few features to make it better than the M3. Of course that would not benefit DJI. M3vM2P, hmmm!
It was a money grab at the time especially when we were thinking that the M3 was around the corner and would eclipse the Air2S and everything before it, but it apparently didn't!

With DJI's investment in this sensor, I have to hope they can wring more out of it. I have to say it: It's resolution cannot be as bad as we see here when cropped. Your M3 may have a focus issue. Exchange it for another one. Even though I don't see focus loss like that when I compare my M3 to Evo 2 Pro like you did in the other video. Just saying. Agree or not I would exchange it. B&H will happily do so. Then you should retest.
I'm confused with the zoom comparison. I think the 3x zoomed shots on the Mavic looked more pulled in compared to the Air2s 3x zoomed shots. I wish both videos are as identical so we could really see how the Mavic 3 compares to the Air 2S
Because both the drones have different focal lengths like I mentioned in the beginning with their field of view being 88 and 84°. If I do line them up image wise then people will say one drone is closer and one drone is further which I don't want, I prefer to see how each one handles detail at the same point in space.
Trini? Thanks FINALLY for an honest review. So many other reviewers have been hyping this drone. I think it's a good drone but not worth the extra $$$. The EVO comparisons have been especially helpful.
all automatic ok but it would be interesting to know at which aperture the mavic 3 worked because there seems to be a lot of diffraction in that video, perhaps because the iso was too high and the camera compensated with a very small aperture. it would be useful to know the exif data of both. I'm sorry but I find it hard to believe that the mavic 3 is so poor
I was considering Mavic3 as the last purchase of the drone and it was very helpful. Until I buy my next drone, I'm running on the ground with a Mini2 with tires. I want to continue watching, so I will subscribe.😄👍！

At risk of saying the obvious, your 3 X zoom comparisons are not the same. The Mavic 3 image is zoomed in much closer?.... Surely both images should at least be approximately the same size as each other?...🤔😳😳🇬🇧

It looks like you switched the images: I just don’t understand why DJI would make mavic 3 less high resolution compared to mavic 2s
I don’t know what is the reason you are getting bad results with the Mavic 3, but my experience as an owner is the image quality is incredibly good. I also have an Air 2s which is excellent, but I have no doubt the images from the Mavic 3 are even better. I was curious by your 3x zoom comparison - the Mavic 3 does not even have a 3x zoom. It goes 2x then 4x?
Do those new Autel drones have GPS geo zone restrictions like dji drones? I hope not
Think you should have compared the 7x zoom...as that is the optical zoom on the M3.
You can't compare an optical zoom to a digital zoom, the result is a forgone conclusion.

I don't know, maybe firmware can fix because the pictures are retaining great detail, so maybe the code for video is incomplete, or maybe the hardware processor doesn't have the power to process everything 🤷
I don't know, I'm definitely not a expert, all I know is what I see, but one thing is for sure, Time will Tell.

This review makes me appreciate my Mavic 2 Pro even more! How could they get the Air2S right on day 1 but screw up the M3 which should have built upon the Air2S strengths??
I have said from the release date: DJI should have offered a discounted price on the M3. Unfinished , untested and unproven product. Everyone who bought it is a "test pilot". Real test pilots are paid for their risks taken. My Air 2S is my Work Horse Drone. It delivers every time! Looking hard at Autel as an alternative to the M3. Won't consider buying an M3 until well after the Firmware update and the net results. Poor choice by DJI. Maybe a bit arrogant in fact...

To be honest, the fact that the air2s shoots 10 bit video is all I will ever need as a colourist. For the price of the mavik 3 I can have 20 more batteries for my air2s and fly forever. So Dji really needs to do something to shift my perspective. The only reason I would invest in the crippled magic 3 is if It got compatibility to the dji goggles.
Thank you for he information, I really do appreciate it - but why compare "auto everything" when testing picture quallity? Different iso values alone will create drastically different images, not to mention using auto to aperture, shutter speed and iso can create so many inconsistencies from drone to drone. So many unknown variables makes this comparison on image quality incomplete. I would think the number of people who purchase the Mavic 3 and keep everything in auto are few and far between. Sincerely not trying to bag your work at all, just think that it kind of an unfair comparison.

Mike how did they get the Air2S right and not this? They were supposed to build upon the Air2S strengths. I was going to sell my Air2S and Mavic 2 Pro for the M3 but it appears both of them may still be better so why get rid of them? I can't imagine a firmware being able to fix these video flaws all that much.
@@DronePsyche To be honest the Mavic 3 was a drone that was half finished and the release was rushed, simply to make it before Christmas. The January firmware update is supposed to fix some of these things however I'm not sure how well it may improve the drone, if it does I may invest and buy it. I currently own a DJI Phantom 4, Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 and an Air 2S.

Really good comparison!, and about the ending... I am waiting to see some reviews of Autel Lite+, which has a 1-inch sensor, like the Evo 2 Pro, and I am wondering if it will have the same quality, anyone else here in the same situation?
Even if the Lite+ uses the same sensor as the Evo 2 Pro is will be the same quality.
I will be picking up the Lite+ to replace my Air 2S. I also have the Evo 2 Pro 6k. The camera is likely the same but video shooting options may not be the same, which is fine with me because I choose to do little editing. Unlike the Evo 2 the Lite+ will not have omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, again no big deal. The remote is going to be different but photos I’ve seen it looks solid. The app is going to be different. That I’m unsure about because i like the Explorer app. But, unlike DJI drones there are two things Autel brings to the table:
1- No geofencing. The DJI No Fly Zones are being added to the apps but there is NO plan to incorporate geofencing so it’s a matter of getting clearance if needed then firing up the drone without need for a code or anything to unlock the drone for flight. Advantage Autel.

@@RoyHarperLighthouseGuy You are very well informed! now the question is when are we going to see the first reviews, it seems we might need to wait after Christmas, in Autel store inside JD app (I am in China) now it says there is 29 days wait, but it is an estimation, they really don't know when they will be able to ship the new drones inside China.
@Victor thanks for the kind words. When any of the new lineup of drones will ship is something that seems unknown to anyone right now. It's almost winter where I live so I'm not concerned for now. It gets cold enough and we get enough snow that I do very little flying for the nest 3 to 4 months. Late March, early April will work for me to see the Lite+ show up at my front door.
