Honestly Brian, the way you explain and demonstrate concepts at just the right pace is second to none. We are all so fortunate to have access to such excellent teaching. Thank you.
As someone that had to self taught himself this tou managed to connect all the missing dots. One of the best guitar teaching I’ve seen in a very long time. I’ve been playing for over 15 years now and am moving towards advanced now that I’m 25 and this is the one thing I’d advise any player to know and have as a tool. Thank you
"This ist where the magic starts to happen"....this light bulb "unlock the neck moment" couldn't have been described any better! You really want us to learn and have fun playing the Blues! Denise
I have watched a lot of your videos and some of them several times. I am retired and old, but I am learning a few things. I started playing cowboy chords as a kid long before you were born.
I like these lessons. You are very practical with guitar knowledge. I dislike RUclipsrs who show you useless theory stuff. It’s nice when you put it to practice. I might check out the website for the premium membership
Most RUclips guitar teachers don’t give this type of stuff away for free. Mastering the chord tones within each of the changes of a progression and how those tones relate and guide each other is where it’s at. Music is for the ear.
That's very true! I watched a "short" the other day by someone who does ridiculous videos! That guy never gives ANYthing away! This "short" explained WHY he teaches finger strength building exercises (for guitar), but stopped short of demonstrating even a single exercise! I thought, "What's the point?!" And I had to comment on how useless the video was! Me? I can figure out my own strength building exercises, just as I have for every muscle in my body, for my whole life, lol. Yep. Brian knows he can give things away for free, without jeopardizing HIS OWN value! (Most ppl are disgusted by "teachers" who NEVER give ANYthing away, no matter how small. Those are not actual "teachers," who want you to pay richly for any little tidbit. They're also not very good at it, even if they can play well (or think they can.))
Genius video. Thank you thank you thank you. Lightbulb moments galore! You are a great teacher. This is the blues lead 101 lesson that I have been looking for for years.
Brian I watch Ep485 then I watched this one by doing this it help me to get a better understanding of about landing on the right note and how to find the right note they complement one another!
TOP teacher. Just got a sub. Love it man. Been playing for 30years, away last 10ish...I am back at full swing with you as my teacher. Gotta tell ya...TOP. Gracias...from Colombia
I started with Piano & formal theory as a child. When taking up the guitar the transaction would have advanced so much quicker if I had you for a teacher. Thank you Brian for sharing your knowledge. You instill the importance of discipline to advance my scales.👍
Hey Brian, this lesson happened to pop up today and I thought I already know how to improvise, so I watched it anyway. Light bulb moments. So much good information that I didn't know, honestly I didn't know that with the major scale you could find the 1, 3, 5 and 7 of the chord. You know how you used to show the micro lessons. You should put this lesson in with your regular lesson as a micro lesson sort of and sit back and see how many good comments you get from this one. Bet you, lol.
Brian, you are truly a gifted musician AND teacher. I really appreciate how you always explain the why's of everything you're demonstrating. Keep up the awesome work!
Brian, that was excellent. This "light Bulb " has the highest wattage compared to all the other " Light Bulbs " you have given us, Now, I can see the guitar road ahead.
This was a really wonderful way to hear and see the chord tones like a perfect pace to make the connection of seeing and hearing. It’s hard to describe but as a student I’ve heard it explained well and demonstrated well but this is better. Now I’m going watch it ten more times so I can finally make a nice complete solo instead of just cool stuff over the 1 chord. Lol thank you !
I’ve been doing your 2 chord minor blues exercise - alternating chords and licks over Em and Am. Great exercise for so many things. It soon emerged that E licks landing on E and vice versa makes a big difference. I wish I’d learned that easy exercise long ago.
Well Brain you see I learn guitar from books by myself I study the caged system but then didnotnew what to do with old a lot of ryhtm that the reason that I want to learn from you the way you explain its great,
Love your lessons learned that jazzy Christmas jungle bells rock a few years ago. Can you do lesson on double octaves? I have hard time understanding it how.play it. I seen some great jazz songs use it just in right place .. and sounds so creamy your teaching easy to understand
This is really helpful. I've been learning bass recently to help with my guitar and they always talk about using the 1, 3, and 7 which I couldn’t get why when all triads are the 1, 3 and 5. Odd but it helped connect guitar and bass a little more.
You just opened up so much for me. Do you expand on the different positions of the pentatonic and how all the different chords fit inside or is that part of our journey?
I know it’s kind of basic but a lesson on fast/intermediate strumming patterns would be awesome. I just seem to hit a wall with fast strumming even like standard funk style rhythm
I would be very interested if you put together a mini course on landing on the chords when leading. It continues to elude me. I have watched and worked at the videos relevant to that concept. I don’t know why but not yet. Perhaps I need a more methodical and very clear path of practice. I wonder Brian if you would take a couple students who don’t know how to do that and walk them through over time some instruction until they achieve it and see what it actually takes for them to learn how to land on the chords when leading, and then translate that to a mini course. I would be very happy if it worked and I would certainly pay for it. I have played rhythm guitar for decades and I’ve learned to get around the fretboard on the Pentatonics but I am not landing on the chord changes. I have been a subscribing member of active melody at various times over the past five years. It’s probably just me and something I’m not doing right with practice but maybe that’s the point. To figure out what it is to do during practice in a more clear path that may open this up for myself and possibly many others. No disrespect intended I love the videos obviously and also appreciate the advancements that Brian has been making in the look of the videos and all the backing track work. Thanks for considering it. Bob
Depends, if you want to add that blues spice to it while using major pentatonic, you can use the 7, if not, just stick to the 1 and 3. Or try landing on the 6 (also a good note for major).
Listen up, you young whippersnappers! In my day, we didn't have these so-called "expert guitar players" giving away all these "amazing guitar lessons" on this new-fangled "you-tube" thing! We were happy fumbling around on the blues scale that our stoner buddy taught us! And you know what? WE SUCKED!
You lost me after you first started talking about the 1-3-5-7 of the B-major scale, but then suddenly flipped into a conversation about B-minor pentatonic.
@@activemelody it's still a great lesson. It's just that you should explicitly point out how your shifting from using b-major landing notes (like the 3) on the 1 chord to some of the b-minor pentatonic landing notes (like the flat 7) on the 4 chord. That missing detail in the narrative caused me some confusion. For example, the 3 is not a landing note in the minor pentatonic, right? The b3 is. But not the 3. But on the positive side, forced me to break it down myself to see how this was a blend of major and minor.
I realise you can't play much slower just for the thickest student... I think I need to know as soon as I get information overwhelm... Take a break, see how world War 3 is tuning up, heating up and how my woman's cooling off...
Honestly Brian, the way you explain and demonstrate concepts at just the right pace is second to none. We are all so fortunate to have access to such excellent teaching. Thank you.
The best video on RUclips I’ve ever found that truly helps with learning to solo on the guitar

That is one of the most illuminating explanations of improvising over a 1.4.5 blues i,ve ever come across...wow ,so much in that one lesson !!
Oh now this is fun!! Huge. So sick of landing on the root.

Every Active Melody lesson is a breakthrough for me - if I could only keep up! Very well explained, as always, Brian! 💕
Super useful lesson. Long time premium member here. Money well spent!! Thanks Brian.

I just started learning scales cause lockdown. This man is an advanced teacher!
this is basic information, but holds true.
Brilliant! I instantly saw what you were doing here. Teaching a player how to hear the sound of the intervals and not just where to put fingers.
good lesson. i learn something from every one of your videos.

(7:01) "Arpeggio" (pron. "Arp-edge-o" - 3 syllables, btw - the 'i' is silent: it's there to turn the 'g' into a 'j') literally means 'harp-like.' 🙂
Awesome as always...this should help with phrasing so much, understanding the concept...ty

Great lesson Brian. Just one question. the suggestion to not target the 5th note of the scale, does that apply for both minor as well as major? Thanks
Why do I suddenly have the urge to play Pretty Woman? 😄 Great lesson though.

Brian - what to emphasize if playing major pentatonic? 1, 3, and ___?

What no short Jam track playing over top of example
You don’t need one for this. The composition this week works on its own - that said you can always play over any song and use these principles.
