Steve Martin stars as a womanizing sheet-music salesman in this lip-sync "musical" based on the drama by Dennis Potter (The Singing Detective). During the Great Depression, a married sheet-music salesman falls in love with another woman and uses cheery songs from that era to imagine a better life for himself. Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters and Jessica Harper form the triangle of this razzle-dazzler in which the era's songs are used to illuminate the inner lives of its characters in contrast with their grim outer reality.
    Directed By Herbert Ross
Starring Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Jessica Harper

I saw this in the theaters when it was first released. The musical numbers were pretty impressive on the big screen, and the great depression as backdrop was appropriate considering what the economy was like in 1981 (a tough time for me too). This film was unlike anything done by Steve Martin; a risky "downer" of a story and I don't remember anything funny in it. It was a musical drama and as such I think it was a success. Too bad it was a financial failure. It deserves to be rediscovered.

So ahead of its time it might quietly be one of the most influential musicals ever. Only took 30+ years to find its audience.

Fucking A. Never knew anything about the BBC version. But this- THIS- this was the the scene. This guy nailed it- PERIOD

I've seen hundreds of musicals and this is one of the greatest, saddest fantasy dance scenes ever performed, and most people have never even seen it; the way the guy does his bittersweet dance of hopeful hopelessness against a back-drop of cascading money, dreams and horror scenes from WWII, that part really gets to me too. I sure didn't like the way Martin's character was so mean to the guy at the end of the scene in the movie.

It's one of the strangest, most surreal, dark movies I have ever seen. Through all the oddities that this flick is, I have learned to like it. It was a brave, unexpectedly bizarre feature, and I have to give a tip of the hat to all who were involved.

This has got to be the most ingenious, surrealist scenes ever put on celluloid. Also a really wonderful, if depressing movie. There's a reason this was the "Greatest Generation." Anyone today who thinks they've got it tough should read a book on the depression. Ain't no comparison.

This scene has stayed with me ever since I saw it in the theater all those years ago.

+Vanilla Godzilla: My gratitude to you for pointing out what the description left out. Arthur Tracy was my good friend, and thanks to that scene he had an entire second career. Originally, the producers had intended to use Crosby’s recording-until they discovered Arthur’s Decca disc and were awestricken by what movie critic Pauline Kael described as “a song of hope by a singer on the verge of tears.”

It's so important to appreciate the things in life we already have. That raindrops are 'pennies from Heaven' is the most endearing thought. We should cherish everything we experience, especially those that come for free.

We are fortunate that this movie was made. A complex film, it has layers that can be investigated, or can just be taken for its great musical numbers.

Absolutely Gorgeous!! I simply cannot watch this without tearing up every time. Probably the most underrated dance number in history.

One of my favorite movie scenes from a great movie. The singer of the song is Arthur Tracy from his 1927 recording.

An achingly gorgeous film, and an indelible viewing experience for those willing to have their hearts broken by a movie.

Vermeil Bagneris’s dancing adds such grotesquerie to the song, especially considering the authentic Depression photo backdrops. Combined with the 1927 recording, the scene’s a masterpiece of tonal conflict. Perfect encapsulation of the movie.

I viewed this wonderful, interesting musical in 1982, I was captivated by all of the theatrics, from the twenties, the era the film had captured, I was memorized!!!! All of the The actors/actresses were excellent, I especially loved Steves/Bernadettes characters. While I truly enjoyed the entire movie, I absolutely loved the skit that Vernel performed in the rain here at the diner, his performance was Steller!!! What a treat to watch the film again on TCM an hour ago and now Vernel's skit on RUclips, 42 yrs later!!!!!! Thank you for showcasing Vernel!!!!!!!!!!
