    The laser cannons in ride being off also makes the scene especially weird, because the ride vehicles still stop and double back to avoid being run over by the cannons, except that’s not an issue. So if you’ve never been on the ride where the cannons work, it just feels like the droid driving is going a little crazy or taking a moment for a really tense dance break.

    "Soarin Over the World" at least makes thematic sense at Epcot, having it replace "Soarin Over California" at California Adventure was such a boneheaded move they keep bringing back the original for limited engagements.

    One of my favorite Disney attractions ever was Alien Encounter. It gave a palpable sense of dread beginning with Tim Curry’s voice for the robot SIR in the pre-show. They had Kathy Najimy for comic relief. The downgrade to Stitch’s Great Escape was a heartbreaking loss. Now that is gone too.

    I totally agree about the Imagination Pavilion tragedy! They ruined it!😢 that opening scene with Dreamfinder, the Dreamcatcher and Figment was magical! That was truly top level imagineering we will likely never see again. 😢 The fact that RotR has also lost its best effects is heartbreaking as well.

      I still have very vivid memories of how incredible the Dreamcatcher was - it's a shame it wasn't preserved and updated in some way. That's one of the best things about Disney Parks. People have been going on Haunted Mansion and Pirates for generations - and they've been updated in ways that really preserve the experience. My big wish for D23 is a new overhaul of Figment that brings back Dreamfinder.

    The Seas with Nemo and Friends- It's hard to compare the original with this relaunch, but the relaunch looks like 5 different group projects meshed together with effects that don't work well or at all. The jellyfish scene was done by a kinder garden class the night before the assignment was due. It's crazy how they could have added a really cool scene here (like from Na'vi River Journey) to immerse you into the ocean. The Anglerfish animatronic is rarely working. The animated tunnel should have shields around the projectors on the floor so (1) you can't see them and (2) it doesn't blind you and spoil the effect. This is something that is prevalent throughout the ride- they didn't take the time to conceal most of the projectors/lighting effects. Overall, very sloppy and not up to Disney standards. This could be so much better with just a few upgrades and maintenance.

    I have an idea of how imagineers could in theory fix the cannons in Rise at Galaxy's Edge. Redesign them so they don't move in front of the vehicles. But they move above them with a recoil like effect and maybe even shoot out smoke like they are overheating, That could be the reason that the R5s are scared to move past them. Just an idea.

    • @Guide2WDW
      @Guide2WDW  Месяц назад +17

      Very good suggestion! Test Track 2.0 was more of a side-grade for me. The Tron-esque visuals are cool, and I find the car designer game fun. But they made the story of the ride really muddled, the whole “see your design on the ride” thing is super buggy, and the scenes are less memorable than 1.0. I could definitely see the argument that it’s a downgrade though.
      Really hoping that the upcoming reimagining of the ride will be an upgrade.

    For the record, Kodak didn't think digital cameras would work because at the time, the storage media could only hold 2 or 3 low quality images at a time and since the internet was rare, you couldn't just upload them to have them printed. It was just one of those cases where they came out with a game changing device way before the rest of technology needed to make it work could catch up.

    • @Guide2WDW
      @Guide2WDW  Месяц назад +5

      That's a great point. Also, the first digital camera they developed was *so* far away from being anywhere close to a consumer device - but a huge tech innovation.
      So, did I give them an unfairly harsh time about that in this script? Yes.
      But did they also ruin one of the best rides of all time? Also yes.

    I agree with these critiques of Disney World attractions, but I would reserve the worst Minus of all time for Disneyland's People Mover. It was "upgraded" to the Rocket Rods using the Test Track ride system in an effort to give TomorrowLand another E-Ticket class ride at a fraction of the budget. Unfortunately, it used the original People Mover track supports, which weren't up to the task of withstanding the ride's forces. Even the effort to slow down the ride vehicles around the turns (which created a herky-jerky lame ride experience) didn't prevent the supports from experiencing structural fatigue approaching catastrophic failure. On top of that, a low guest-per-hour capacity and unreliability shut the Rocket Rods down, and the remaining infrastructure was too damaged to revert back to the People Mover. A case of an attraction that was literally upgraded out of existence.
    The same thing nearly happened to Disneyland's Space Mountain, but that's another story...

      @Guide2WDW  29 дней назад +2

      Both the People Mover and Rocket Rods were before my time visiting Disneyland, but I find that whole ordeal fascinating! It's such a shame because having that track empty is such a detraction in the land.

      Rocket Rods or Eisner's folly a classic case of if it's not broken don't fix it. The Disneyland people mover was beloved nobody wanted it to be a E ticket attraction. I was a teen in the late 80s early 90s my friends and I loved the people mover sure it wasn't thrilling but it had this cool 60s swinging soundtrack and you could just chill for 10 minutes. I look at Tomorrowland today and I want to cry because now it's a eyesore a compilation of half measures and compromise and it's lost all it's identity. I would love to see Disney take the wrecking ball to Tomorrowland and completely rebuild bringing it back to it's previous glory. However I don't have any confidence in Disney's current management.

Once all the new stuff coming to DAK opens up in 3-5 years, which will also be just after the 20 year mark for everest, it will be about time to retrack the ride. With all that new capacity it will be a good time to close it without having too much impact on ops. Tower of Terror is one that not many people bring up in terms of how much of the show effects are broken or messed up in some way, it's honestly shocking just how bad it has gotten in the past few years. Projections not having color, audio being completely out of wack, even the drop sequences themselves were toned down slightly.

To my huge disappointment in late 2022, major portions of Indy were not functioning, such as the iconic boulder chase. Additionally, many of the fire effects seemed diminished or non-existent. Overall a huge let down! In general, Indy just seemed tired and broken (kinda like the movie franchise). Anyway, I hope it has seen some love in the last 1.5 years.

    Being super pedantic, your statement at 8:45 is technically incorrect. The full name of the ride is Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain. The ride takes place on a fictional mountain called the “Forbidden Mountain” that has a train that traverses said mountain and would take you to the base camp of Mt. Everest if not for the broken track. The mountain facade of the ride is portraying the forbidden mountain. So it is not ‘based on a real mountain’ unless you count the name only.

    • @Guide2WDW
      @Guide2WDW  Месяц назад +2

      That’s definitely a good distinction, and I’m kicking myself that I forgot that detail. I’d still argue that the spirit of my statement is correct: Imagineering drew inspiration from a real world location to create the ride, just like with Matterhorn. Probably “they’re the only two Disney rides named after real mountains” would be more accurate.

    Enchanted Tiki Room WDW version after they ditched "Under New Management" was top on my list of downgrades (at least DL one is intact). It's a shell of the original. Also, I was told by a cast member that the reason they changed Rise of the resistance was because they had to cut out a certain number of seconds due to a California law during the pandemic that limited the amount of time that people could be in an enclosed ride vehicle. So they had to shave off a certain number of minutes. Probably doesn't apply to the gun room scene though since the vehicles go through the same dance, just without the guns moving.

    Gotta add that the Kodak decision to downsize the ride was also because the original opening to the right where you fly with Dreamfinder was, just like the Yeti, super ambitious and constantly broke. I need to make a few corrections regarding Expedition Everest and Matterhorn:
    1. Matterhorn didn't debut its yeti animatronics. Those were added after Expedition Everest opened in order to sort of tie the two rides together.
    2. Expedition Everest, despite the title, actually isn't based on Mt. Everest itself, but rather a fictional "Forbidden Mountain" in between the ride station and Mt. Everest base camp. The closest real-world mountain to the Forbidden Mountain, based on its placement and shape, is Pomouri Peak.
    3. Disney actually did put a lot of effort into fixing the Yeti. They reinforced the Yeti's foundation and mountings, adjusted and tweaked the force on the pneumatic cylinders, and have even replaced individual parts of the animatronic. The problem is that every time they manage to fix it, something else breaks during testing.

    • @Guide2WDW
      @Guide2WDW  29 дней назад

      Thank you for writing in and sharing your insights. My understanding is that the Harold the Yeti figures were added to Matterhorn in 1978, which were updated in 2015 for the 60th Anniversary. I definitely dropped the ball on the Forbidden Mountain location, and saying "only two rides with real mountains in their names" would have been more accurate. And I didn't know about those specifics about Disney's attempts to fix the Yeti! Very fascinating.

    I'm a huge Stitch fan but even I thought that "chili dog burping Stitch" was in poor taste and not at all in line with his character of being an alien that didn't receive all of his genetic programming in creation. After all Stitch's entire movie Lilo & Stitch is based on Autism and development disabilities. Reducing stitch to regurgitating something based on fart jokes was by far the worst decision Disney Executives had made with refurbishing Alien Encounter. There were so many better ways to include Stitch in that attraction without resorting to Farting Sounds/Noises. Also toilet papering the Castle was in my opinion a cheaply thrown together" how do we dress up the castle again" to mark Stitch's arrival to the Park. Stitch may be mischievous but whoever's idea it was to toilet paper the Castle and make farting noises a part of the refurb of Alien Encounter, I sincerely hope that person was fired.
