In this video, I teach you what a still air box is and why one is needed in mycology! This is my original (and only!) still air box that I made out of a Sterilite container. I melted arm holes in it by heating a large aluminum coffee can on the stovetop and then pressing it through the plastic. Hope this helps you learn why you need a still air box and how to make one easily at home!
CHAPTERS
🍄 00:00 A still airbox is essential for mycologists to minimize contamination and improve mycology efforts. A still airbox is a game changer for mycologists, providing a contained area to stop air movement and improve mycology efforts. Minimize the risk of contamination in mycology procedures to give mycelium the best chance to succeed and produce a great flush of mushrooms.
🔬 02:18 A still air box is a cost-effective tool for home mycology work, providing a clean air environment to prevent contamination with a 75% success rate. A still airbox is an effective and more affordable tool for conducting mycology work at home, providing a clean air environment to prevent contamination. A still air box has a higher contamination rate compared to a laminar flow hood, with a success rate of around 75%, but it still greatly minimizes the risk of contamination.
📦 04:44 Use a large plastic container, sterilize it with isopropyl alcohol or bleach, and douse everything before using it as a still air box for work.
📦 06:28 Use a still air box to create a clean and sterile environment for working with mushrooms and other materials.
🔍 07:48 Cut arm holes in a box with a good seal to create a still air box for clean and precise drilling.
🔧 09:13 Use a drill bit to create clean holes in plastic, but go slow to avoid splitting, or try burning with a hot coffee can for a different method.
🔥 10:34 Make sure to measure the hole placement carefully, use caution when heating the can, and be prepared for smoke when using the burning hole method to create a still air box.
🔥 12:05 Apply pressure when using a still air box for mycology work to reduce contamination rates.
KEY INSIGHTS
🌬️ A still airbox is an absolute Game Changer for mycologists, and once you start using one, you'll never go back to not using it.
💨 Using a laminar flow hood is the most effective way of doing mycology work, but it can be expensive for home use.
🍄 A plastic bin can be used as a still air box and then double as a fruiting chamber for mushrooms, making it a versatile tool for gardening.
🔍 Using a drill bit to cut a hole in plastic can be tricky, as going too fast can cause the plastic to split.
👀 Quadruple check the distance between the holes for your arms in the still air box, as it can affect the comfort and functionality of the box.
🍄 "This is a still airbox. It will change your life in terms of your mycology work."
