Bit of a different one today! Never done anything like this before but thought I'd give it a bash, entertainment and mixing in some education as we go! Really hoping they don't come off as disrespectful but honestly if a tutorial is crap then a tutorial is crap, the intent doesn't absolve the authors from any criticism, I've had several years of that hence why I feel fine doing it... many of my own tutorials could be ripped apart from the early days and I might even do that as well here! But just thought hey, something different!
I've been following 'SolidWorks Tutorials with Aryan' and find him to be very good. Goes into a lot of detail. I have found it very difficult to find decent tutorials for SolidWorks. I followed yours for Inventer several years ago but there's no maker licence options. SolidWorks is £10/month so went with that. Obviously there's the option to pirate but I'd rather have legitimate copies with bug fixes and security patches. Your tutorials were top notch and still reference then whilst working in SolidWorks.
@@larry365 Ohhh I recognise that name, I came across his name when 3DConnexion released their utterly tripe keyboard... I remember looking around to see who else might have one and he popped up and was getting a bit of stick about coming across like a commercial for them! But his video looked high quality though, never seen any tutorials though. Yea a maker license for Inventor would be useful but at this point I think that might be Fusion 360...
@@Neil3D Fusion is definitely the more affordable option but unfortunately still out of reach for a lot of people. For me personally, I cant make the justification for £100s a year until I have got to a stage of reasonable competence; everyone's circumstances are different.
I think this series you are trialing is worthwhile. Any creator worth their salt will only take onboard your criticism as a way to improve in the future. And as you say, crap is crap. It's out there and it's making it very difficult to find decent content, especially with the removal of the dislike button.
Perhaps after you've "reviewed" a few channels, you could compile a recommendations list for people entering the space.
@@larry365 Thanks that feedback is super useful, I wasn't sure if this series would just be taken as unreasonable snark! But yea for Fusion, I meant the free version could be seen as a maker license although the restrictions are quite tight on that now. But I'll probably be putting a bit of pressure on Autodesk about the lack of a maker license soon as they're about to introduce something similar for another product which I never saw coming, and if they can do it for that they can do it for Inventor!

You cannot be compared to the cheap content on RUclips that has been manufactured for audiences that live on mind numbing entertainment. You sir have created something that has indeed allowed for a greater purpose of educating the public in a topic that has changed the world. I for one started working with CAD (Autodesk Inventor) about two years ago in high school and you were a huge part of my start. Since beginning my CAD journey I have learned so much from your videos and because of that I have been given some incredible opportunities such as designing and building a massive trailhead kiosk for my Eagle Scout project along with gaining my first engineering internship doing CADD with GIS software working for my city. I have been able to create countless things that I would have never been able to do without quality content such as your RUclips videos. Thank you for everything you have given to me and the rest of this community. You are appreciated and I hope you continue to produce this type of content!

I watched your videos when I just started working in the drawing office , no one wanted to teach me how to use inventor ,if it wasn’t for your tutorial videos when the channel was call TFI I would never have learnt how to use inventor,at the moment I teach new workers how to use inventor and I am in charge of all CAD software , thank you so much for the helpful tutorials
I second your post. Finding Neil's channel was absolutely crucial to my shifting from AutoCad to Inventor as my primary design and modeling program.
I third the previous comment. I was taught prncipally by you.
Initially I thought this was a little harsh as any content is better than no content. The more I think about it the more it is completely justified as this is professional software. I have been using it for about 11 years now and am amazed by how many people don't know the basics. I still don't understand why it isn't a requirement to have professional training. I am expected to have a degree in engineering but designers aren't expected to be trained in the software they use!?!? Many learn on the job picking up bad habits and when you are working in vault with multiple other engineers those bad habits can and do cause serious problems.

I still remember 5-6 years ago I was introduced to 3d modeling and Autodesk Inventor was my native software. I was totally in love with the software and watched your tutorials all the time. I prefered your channel over all the other channels because the content had quality. Unfortunately though, the amazing Inventor is not so renowned in the industry as the other competing softwares. Being a young mechanical design engineer, at every stage of my life I had to adopt a new software based on the company preference and start from scratch. I am currently on my 6th software, Solidworks (after Inventor, creo, NX, Catia, Fusion 360) trying to achieve the level of expertise I have in Inventor. Even to this day, I feel my life would have been much easier if you made tutorials on other softwares or atleast if there were enough people who could match your caliber in making the tutorials more immersive and knowledgeable.
You are surely doing an excellent work shaping the future of the industry. Please carry on doing the same.

Hi Niel. I have watched a few of this guys videos and yes very frustrating. As you say, a lot left out. I’ve only watched his solid works videos as that is what the company I work for uses. There are no solid works tutorial channels that come close to TFI as it was, at least none that I’ve found. It boggles the mind that so many people would rather engage in mindless shite online like hamster funerals than good solid tuition. Unfortunately, a sign of the times I guess. I’m an Inventor die hard, love the software, and I recently also started playing around in Fusion 360. Fair play Niel for all the effort and sacrifice of your time to help people like me. Love it Neil! I used to be a certifed Inventor trainer etc 5 years ago. Happy to be back in the field for 5 years for a change of pace. I can say I look for your tutorials to glean more information, because even certified guys can learn from others! Keep up the great work!
I thoroughly enjoyed this kind of video. You are also teaching us great little tidbits of knowledge for beginners, such as one sketch per feature. It also has its benefits for the creators of the tutorial as they get honest criticism on their work. Please keep this kind of content coming! 🙂

I learned a lot from your video, and I'm glad you put it online. sometimes I look back, to show a person how it can be done. they are very educational thanks
People tend to assume that teaching id easy and anyone can do it (for views, for profit, for visibilty of skills, etc). The public in general assumes that someone who uses many softwares are high skilled. For someone awared that studying, really knowing something, practice to be really skilled this kind of content in general is somewhat complicated.
If you know and understand this situation, do not be disappointed. I really enjoyed the old videos back in the day. Unfortunately some good content tend to have low view numbers, etc.
Being an Indian and a CAD professional/trainer for almost 15years staying abroad ....tbh this is a piece of crap. These people doesn't have a proper sequence and explanation and we get into trouble when a new customer comes to me and says" I learnt from youtube" and i have to ask what channel you followed.. Or what i do is ask them to wipe their brain and start over again... Teaching is not an easy task and these people just want to earn from youtube with all misleading informations.... Thanks a lot for this video and you are 100 percent correct whatever you have explained...Great.
Hi Neil That is why I still seek out your old TFI tutorials. I certainly did appreciate your sense of Pommy humour. One thing I do hate about a lot of other tutorials is that they sellect and click on icons so quickly that I have to replay the video a few times to see what is happeniong. Cheers mate. J

Hi Neil. I just want to thank you if you see this for your tutorials back in the day. It was about 10 or more years ago when I was learning Inventor on the job and your stuff was one of the only sources of educational material which got me through some situations. Not on this account but whatever account I used way back when. These days I am studying Industrial Design and have put out some videos for Solidworks beginners, welcome to roast me haha. When time permits I want to do more videos about ID and 3D modelling in general but as your aware it takes a lot of time and dedication (and consistency which I lack).
For mebCADCAM TUTORIAL is one of the best RUclips tutorial for beginner. He explain it very well, and no shaddy background skips.
If you want to learn solidwork, I recommend that channel
I would recommend the Engineering Applied channel. Very informative and explains the different buttons/options and what they do.

Neal! Long time no see. (my fault) I remember the first non Autodesk support site I found when I was first self teaching Inventor Series 9. It was sdotson and I think it later changed to something else I can't remember. They had a competition to see who could create a part model with the fewest sketches. Kind of became a habit for me to create part models with the fewest amount of sketches. That was long before I learned anything about "best practice" and other basic terms I think should be taught to people new to any CADD program. Now that I'm retired, I would like to get back into Inventor just to stay current. I've always enjoyed your content and your style. Looking forward to seeing more of your content. Sdotson now runs a robot/automation company, I have him on LinkedIn but yea I remember the challenges from a while back. There was the Inventor World Cup which might have been the same thing. I'm gonna make a video about that best practice thing though, seems to have peaked a lot of interest!
@@Neil3D Maybe you could throw a little more into that video. Like proper terminology, program set up and configuration, internal standards. All the stuff most new users are never taught. Most of us were just thrown into the deep and and expected to be productive. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I work in Inventor although I 'use' AutoCAD for part and model information. I sometimes have to 'google' for help and I NEVER get your tutorials via google. I am subscribed to your youtube channel, however and love your content. It's help more than a few times!
So I started learning Autodesk Inventor, but recently decided to go the way of SOLIDWORKS.
Personally I don't know if one is better than the other, but as a mechanical engineer in Nigeria, everyone asks about familiarity with SOLIDWORKS hence I switched and I'm currently trying to find my way about it.
I just want to get an advice on whether I made a right choice.
By the way, your video about workstations really helped me make a great decision on my current laptop for CAD... Also a workstation. It's a couple years old, but it has a mind blowing performance.

Hamster funeral, brilliant example you found there. I don't think you are going to find too many tutorials you would be happy with. This one at least was short. I tend to click on yours first even if they are not the latest.
Yea I haven't quite figured out what I'm gonna do with the longer ones... I might have to just jump cut through them and only play the parts where I interject, else a 30 minute tutorial could be a 45 min long video! But thanks, tutorials aren't for me any more but at least with this type of content I get to pass on some education whilst also trying to build a channel!

There are a lot of those ‘demonstration’ videos in the IT computer space. These videos show that they know how to use the software, but don’t show someone else how to use the software.
Where can find a playlist of all ur torturials? I've seen severals but never been able to find them all sortet togheter. Great videos, keep it up!
Now you can see what we have to deal with. Broken English, broken terminology, broken concepts. Please don't stop producing tutorials.
It's the WORST when you are trying to follow along with a "tutorial" and something subtle happens on-screen which you can't duplicate. It's so difficult to wind back your experience and show something like you doing it for the first time. Anyone who has tried to give IT advice to a friend or relative over the phone will know how hard it can be to forget about your own assumptions.

Well, just had a look at the comments on original video. Many people thanked him for helping them out. You should make 'tutorial' videos on Fusion 360 for millions views. ;)
I would "speculate" they remove negative comments because I couldn't see a single one, all tutorials get negative feedback even the best ones! But nah I'm trying to build a proper channel now, you can't build a channel on RUclips around tutorials as the audience engagement is far too inconsistent.
I watched nearly all of his "Tutorials"......I'm not a pro in using Inventor, but i've had the same thoughts as you like "why he's doing this in this way?`"
I've had my first steps with him in Inventor a few Months ago........this days i try to build an Airbus A380. ;-)

Hi Neil I quite agree with you about the amount of fraudulently based drivel on you tube but you can never compare this stuff to your tutorials for like minded people as ourselves were a small gang but we totally needed you and still do need you to keep giving us direction prompts and solutions I instruct PHD students in our Makerspace and your tutorials are my go to direction for them 10 min tutorials work . Thanks for all your efforts please don’t lose the faith . Best Robb
If people spent half of the time they are watching crap like you mentioned, on some kind of informative video like history or pollitics or w/e, they would be a much better version of themselves. That way, watching your videos my laser cutting and press brake workflow became a million times smoother. Appreciated!
How did the hamster die?
I watched a lot of your videos. I'm still new to Inventor and I'm not sure if I will use it since where I work they want to keep using AutoCAD 2D/3D. We do more aluminum structure so, very simple but I believe Inventor would prevent a lot of errors in production. I watched this tutorial and as a new user noticed some of the issues you pointed out. BTW, do you have videos on how to create iparts for frame generator? I've been trying to create my own profiles because Inventor doesn't come with Aluminum framing just steel frame with the rounded corners. I'm having issues with the length. It doesn't register correctly when creating the partlist
Thanks! And nah to make a proper part that works with the Frame Generator needs to go through a proper frame authoring process, I don't think I ever covered that. I haven't tried to do that in years but it used to be quite a chew on, but it's the frame authoring you need to look into and figure out. It needs a ton of parameter mapping from the sketches in your model to the parameters that the frame gen uses to position and manipulate the frames i.e. G_L etc

Hey, have a look at me! Education Alive. I have bugger all views. I basically learnt inventor off you and now use RUclips myself. I saw you coming to Australia. Would have loved to catch up but busy teaching.
You're a brilliant explainer, if you create a course on platform like coursera or something like that we would pay for. Many people make videos but not how to do the things on the right way and then the learners learn with a bunch of mistakes, I'm trying to Learn autocad and I'm watching a lot of videos... And you realize that many videos teach you how to do things but wrong way and then you believe that you learn right.
Great fun Neil, and you're absolutley right some of these youtube video's - rubbish - 3 minutes of talking to start, no explanation etc, etc and you come away with 'what the hell was all that about ?'. A cautionary word though. Keep the anglo saxon expletives to a minimum on here - this is a world wide audience - you're better than that !!.
i run a very large Inventor facebook group and i do not allow member tutorials to be posted. I only ever allowed promotional posts from 1 person who is your Brother :) I dont allow them because they are usually low quality, inaudible and dont really explain anything in depth

I often make as much to single sketch and then select different profiles or use different features. I don't trim though.
Why would that be bad practice, I might have learned wrong in my 9 years of Inventor use.
Because when you over complicate a sketch, it becomes really difficult to go back later on to edit it. That was a very very very basic example of it but if you pack fillets and patterns into a single sketch, resulting in one highly complex 3D feature, it makes future editing really difficult and quite hard to find what you need to edit. And editing a packed sketch is a mare. Whereas if you do 1 sketch, then 3D feature extrude. Another sketch, then fillet. Another sketch, then pattern etc all those features will be in the browser tree and easily visible for editing, you can even name the 3D features for better visibilty. Editing a 3D fillet feature or a 3D feature pattern is also a lot easier and more manageable than editing constrained entities in a sketch. Like I said it can all end with the same end result visually, but for ease of use and future time saving the "sketch per feature" route is just best practice if it can be followed.

Now imagine my whole country ( indian) learning to use professional software using following demos and never learning the basics.
sadly I learnt CAD from such videos since paid courses locally had this exact problem but we had to give those exams to get the certificates.
Wow the paid courses in India are like that too?? Are these from official Autodesk partners or e-learning sites?

@@Neil3D local authorised ones are similar but I have not done it myself just what I have heard from my engineering professor's.
there are local diplomas and Upskilling programs which allow you to get a certificates ( MSCIT is one such body) which are hit or miss since teaching faculties constantly leave due to little to no incentives to teach properly as they get paid the same no matter how many students pass.
in many places here the teachers only teach with the objective of gaming the exams.
@@Neil3D From my experience, the "official" Autodesk affiliated one are often not much better. I think they need to look more closely at who they approve and the material they are using, making sure it's done with every release.
I did learn a lot from your videos in the past. I never minded the length of the videos, just wanted to understand why a certain command was used, and learn about best practice. Videos like this wouldn't be much help as you'll never understand the very basics of what you are trying to achieve.

In regard to @11:29 it's fine to say something is not best practice but also just as important for you to state why the correct way is better.
I wouldn't normally comment this but since you are being so critical on this guy the same applies both ways.
Hmm yea I could have, but I intentionally didn't at that point and that was a conscious decision at the time, because I made a point of explaining what the best practice is and I felt that was enough for just 1 thing. Laying out arguments for everything I'm commenting on would be beyond the scope of the intent of this series and make it significantly longer. I understand it leaves people wondering why what I said is best practice but to then explain that fully with context could be a video in its own right just for that one subject. I'll take it on board moving forward but definitely can't lay out arguments for everything I comment on 👍

I found your Channel while researching computer hardware and specs to run Autodesk Revit and Inventor on a budget system back in 2014.
since then I have graduated , started working moved to a new city etcetera.The world has drastically changed but today after watching you have the same energy as back then is really nice to see.

@@konstantinoskonstantinou3553 Ahh nightmare, yea there's nowt worse with a tutorial when the person just races on and doesn't explain what they're doing and what it means. Thats what I mean by a tutorial needs to be teaching, not a demonstration. If its an advanced tutorial then its fine, but this one was explicitly a beginners tutorial so all that stuff needed to be explained.
