- On this St. David's Day of 2013 as Hollywood FINALLY observes Burton with a star on the walk of fame this is my offering to those who love Burton and his legacy as well as those who may not know much about the man, the LEGEND that was..is..and will always be RICHARD BURTON.

Thank you so much for your postings. I had the wonderful good luck of having seen both of them on Broadway. I saw Burton in Equus, his return to Camelot, the both of them in Private Lives, and Elizabeth in Little Foxes. The stage production of Equus had "student" seats on the stage and being around 17 years old at the time, I was able to get one of them. Could you imagine my joy at watching this man act, so close up??? One of the things that stood out was, of course, his voice, however it was also his diaphragm! He had such a strong voice, such a strong diaphragm, that when he breathed you could see his muscles move right through his suit jacket. What a voice!!!!! She was equally mesmerizing in Little Foxes. In addition, I met his brother, Graham, when I was a cocktail waitress in a hotel in NYC. As soon as he walked in I thought he resembled Burton, however it was the signing of his check that sealed it. As soon as I read the last name, Jenkins, I knew it was him. He stayed in the hotel for several days and shared stories with me of Elizabeth and Richard. Upon leaving, Graham asked if I would deliver an envelope to Kate, Burton's daughter. I did. I can't recall in which play Kate was performing at the time. I went backstage to give her the envelope. What stood out was Kate's dressing room mirror. She had a wonderful photo of her father as Hamlet, posted to it. It was great fun growing up in New York!
*The man was brilliant, driven, tormented, more than a little self-destructive, thoroughly addicted, and a man never to be forgotten. He threw himself at Life and his art.* among his peers: he was a prince, ... sometimes a sneering prince, but a prince nevertheless.
Richard Burton was a great man he loves the bottle more than him self he could have lived longer
@@radhikasamuels9252 Richard was too mentally tormented to give up the drugs and especially the bottle. sad, but true.
Well done.
Impeccable prose.
Thank yuo so much THE WORLD OF RICHARD BURTON for uploading this great great ACTOR.Never forgotten.R.I.P. Richard and Elisabeth togheter.
They say he was the most intelligent actor who lived. My favorite movie is Becket. Burton cannot be replaced.
Burton was ONE of the most intelligent actors ever. Britain and the U.S. have had at least another half-dozen of the same category, ... but just not at fabulously famous.
Elizabeth Taylor said how knows we might have got married again . Burton was truly a Great Actor and was the worlds highest paid actor in his time , a great man with a great voice .
Brilliant man and actor. God bless him
If he had lived past 58 he'd have been even greater - look at how measured and understated he was in that '1984' clip...such a shame, a real lesson as to why one shouldn't booze to excess, it isn't big nor manly nor clever - it destroys in the end. Even my Grand Dad was one and it destroyed him aged 69 so I should know...RIP RB.
What an amazing voice. Just brilliant.
Greatest actor ,most intelligente man so amazing man.Great Richard yuo are a true actor and lovely beautiful man.God bless yuo in heaven.
Thank you for the upload.
Such a wonderful man, RIP Sir Burton, you're one of a kind.
And Elizabeth loved him all the rest of the days of her life. Forever in her soul...
No, she didn't, she never forget of her needs, but true is thatt she didn't find such a man who was equal to Richard.
Elizabeth KNEW that she would never find another equal to Richard Burton. yes. but in her own way, she was infatuated with the man and his uniqueness.
@@leonardohummel8658 Weren' they infatuated with each other? I think their psychological issues were fairly equal as well and both good actors.
@@levertige1ET COULD NOT CONTROL RB AND HE WAS THE ONLY
MAN SHE COULDN'T.
I just adore this man ...
It was alcohol and hard living that did him in well before 60. But there is no doubt about how FULLY he lived his life and the great talent he gave to the world. He was a very rugged, sensitive, tempermental and very masculine man. Sure he had his flaws, ... but he was brilliant. absolutely brilliant at his best.
Well said and well put ! Sadly, years of heavy drinking and even heavier smoking (allegedly about 100 cigarettes a day !) certainly took their toll on his body. Poor chap.... :-(
@@jubalcalif9100 I think his harsh childhood stuck with him his whole life as all of our childhoods do for better or worse.
@@brianwalsh1401 that's for sure
He was also very ill from other physical problems, his spine for one which led to drinking a lot to numb the pain etc. He deserved to win an Oscar many times over and rumour was it that because he'd slept with so many women married to or became married to powerful Hollywood types they denied him such an accolade out of spite. I also admire him for his 100% love and loyalty to his siblings, something my OWN Sister has never had for me.
TheMasterNo6
What was wrong with his spine.
I hope that is not true.
He was married with one woman until he met liz taylor . After the crazy stressy life with her he married two Times. His Last wife was on his side . Liz was a Diva and she got what she wanted . For him it would be better he never would meet her . I believe she is like Virginia Wolf in privat .
@@dagmarzoepke6960 get a life, sally is a witch and bad person
@@suzettebennett9112 About his spine? Yes, it's true.
The fact is, most of us ONLY DREAM of living a life as active, creative, fantastic, and CRAZY as Richard Burton.
but also: the obsessive smoking and drinking got to him. he was pretty wreckless about his mental and physical health. and that was, to say the least, somewhat self-destructive in nature.
sir Richard Burton was and will always be a genius in the motion picture world
Thank you for posting. Your hard work will allow many people the opportunity to appreciate this brilliant actor.
Thank you Ali. I was introduced to Burton in my youth (5 years after his death). I think it would be a terrible shame if Richard Burton is unknown to future generations.
Since I was a young girl (I'm now over seventy) I have been able to recognize his voice the instant I heard it. His clear, perfect diction was a joy to hear ,you could understand every word ! This, together with his beautiful looks and his great acting made him one in a million. I loved him!
The World of Burton N
Thank you for the kind comment. I know there are so many people here in the states even from generation (born in 1976) who know little if anything about Burton, his work, and his life. He should be remembered as one of the greatest actors of all time, not just as Elizabeth Taylor’s husband
There are definitely some women you wish you had never met. I'm sure our old buddy Rich is the president of that club. My favorite movie of his was "Anne of the Thousand Days." I saw it in the theater when I was about fourteen and it's a good example of the kind of high quality movie nobody seems capable of making anymore.
Great actor!! I love him very much!!!!
richard and Elizabeth completed eachothers and no one will be able to separate their names from being next to each other u cant talk about Richard and not mention her and u cant talk about elizabeth and not mentioning him even them did that they admired one other and i love them for that iwish i could have and live such beautiful love like theirs and respect and be respected by my partner 💕
Such a powerful actor the perfect partner for ET!
The first movie I ever saw him in was "Anne of a Thousand Days". It was brilliant.
Where Eagles Dare and The Wild Geese are a couple of my all time favorite movies
Don't forget "Bluebeard" and "The Klansman" !!
We should all have our lives acknowledged.
And by that I mean witnessed.
for anything truly GOOD OR WORTHWHILE DONE: yes.
For those who have not see Burton's performance in 1984, I highly encourage you to watch it. I think it's a masterpiece....and certainly rings true today.
I ADORE READING ...
Good keep it up. I use to read a lot more but now I'm addicted to youtube videos.
Hail Richard Burton. May He live among His followers around the world as a living Spirit...
Bhaskar sen
what a great star so talented and smart liked him in the movies Cleopatra and who is afraid of Virginia woolf talent and great dynamic energie with all woman. andy
Burton is an all-time great and yet dumb critics like to pretend he "squandered his talent". Name me any movie star who has not had flop films? Clooney's films religiously tank at the box office but no one says a thing.....
ThAnk you Jason :-)
Said he drank between 2 1/2 to 3 bottles of liquor daily, at his worst. That and his chain smoking did him in.
Richard could not get rid of his tormenting "demons", so to speak. he was truly haunted by his major mistakes in marriages, relationships, and film.
@@leonardohummel8658 I think to me it looked like he was tormented by his unresolved childhood issues as are a lot of addicts. Childhood is the foundation of our lives and bonding with our parents and having our needs met is so important. He was abandoned by his mother dying and his father giving him up to be raised by his sister, While this might have been necessary because of circumstances kids don't know that.
While he had a great life and career but he was tortured by his "demons" as you put it as are most addicts.
@@leonardohummel8658 his childhood
Such a great talent he was . Unfortunately didn't live up to the expectations as one thought .You need to be disciplined in life in order to achieve your goals and to be financially stable.Though his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor brought him fame but that also became his downfall. Heavy drinking, chain smoking , lavish spending, multiple affairs the list goes on.
He became an example of what an actor or any upcoming actor should not do.
+Shahazadh Sadhiq His first wife Sybil did not turn up at his funeral or any of his memorial services. Neither than his stepchidren Michael and Christopher.
don't blame elizabeth, his father was an alcoholic.
Genial actor!
When he starred in the Exorcist sequel, I knew things must have been getting difficult for him.
he was an actor who should have won
He was a very very VERY handsome man.....only if he had a strong woman on his side to see deeply of him and pull out the best of him.....someone who would listen to him....Elizabeth was a woman who had the world at her feet...so of course she was selfish in that area...always interrupting him in their interviews....you can clearly tell that she was the one who wanted to be in control.....Burton would just go along with it.... secretive, keeping many things hidden to himself ...why would a man drink so much while married to one of the most beautiful famous women? He was definitely trapped, lost and hiding some things in him....
+queenkish His relationship with Elizabeth Taylor did not last any longer than his relationship with his first wife Sybil.
queenkish Very well put! So many people almost HAVE to believe his marriage to Taylor was the best thing that ever happened to him but if anyone reads Melvyn Bragg’s “Richard Burton a life” or even excerpts from his own diary either accepts the truth or laughs it off. Thank you for your comment on one of my favorite uploads. If you’re on FB feel free to join my many groups and pages if you haven’t done so already.
@@robinreed1603 I don't think who Burton would've been married to would've mattered. They all would have ended the same way and the same with his life.
You're welcome. Since I'm the one that put it together I had better know. heh Glad you enjoyed it.
Jason Smith did u know that in the Melvyn Bragg docu..he said..i hate my voice..hate my face.hair.body and hate myself ??..i can understand that if you'd like me to explain.
@@jacquelinepaul9731 Probably because he didn't get his needs met as a kid and was traumatized by his upbringing. Most addicts have similar experiences.
Show me an addict and I'll ask about his childhood. I just read about Richard Burton's and then everything made sense to me.
I enjoyed The Voyage and Brief Encounter that he was in.
sadly Elizabeth was a woman with childish whimsical temper and needs and eroded his talent and brilliant skills making him feel frustrated and looking for his demons in the bottle.
Happy man with loving woman having all the world at his feet would never allow such a waste of his genius. Elizabeth was very absorbent and possessive person and he drawn-out in her world, what a shame...RIP great voice, talent and beautiful blue deep eyes...never will forget his face nor voice reciting Shakespeare...
For balance - if you check out his diaries - Taylor had a great deal to put up with from him, too. He admits he sought rows with her and shouted at her unprovoked. Drink was always a problem to him, though undoubtedly Liz appears to have done next to nothing to help him stay off it. He also did not relish or particularly enjoy stage work; especially after the first few weeks of a run. It bored him. And in fact despite his prodigious talent and the occasional enthusiasm he had for getting back to work, he usually longed for the filming to end, to get the money in the bank and to have long holidays in the sun. In fact, he planned his vacation time much more thoroughly than his work projects, which he was always desperate to finish ASAP. He always wrote about retiring as soon as possible and generally how much he deplored having to act. But he enjoyed the rewards so he felt trapped and was rather bitter about that.
Yes,am agree with your comment however there were always patterning aspects of Liz behavioral problems/profiles...I remember D.Heyman's Liz biography where is always underlined her notorious "prosecution" of Richard and it was since very beginnings...she did not almost anything about his depressions and alcoholism resulting from...she needed company to her own drinking and there was not matter which price was involved to pay for...she did not know to live any "normal"life at normal times (day or night) and she needed an huge court of helpers, companions, workers and confidents as to put up with her work demands and whimsies. They both, apparently were unable to organize their own lives and loved money, huge publicity and - shopping and - sadly, drinking was the most used remedy for them - for anything whether good or bad...
Never think that that Richard wanted to be married Elizabeth. She forced
him to do that. And he felt a great fault for his children, he was a
theater actor not movie, but with ET he had to do movie-money. He lost
himself. That's why he was drinking. He was unhappy man.
You can see a sort of Welsh darkness in the characters of his beloved Dylan Thomas, another prone to drink, self dramatisation and melancholia.
Best when he underplayed, which wasn't often.
RIP Richard Jenkins.
Burton was clearly tormented by his *major* mistakes in marriage, relationships, and celebrity-traps. he also hated both stage and screen {in a sort of artistic general sense}. he much preferred to be a thinker and a creative writer. Unfortunately, all the money {and celebrity} was tied-in with making movies and going "on stage". Nevertheless, he lived one of the most magnificent {and fascinating} lives of the 20th Century.
Can anyone tell me the name of the classical piece playing at 04:43?

Too much smoke and drink. :(
Maybe brought on by too much thwarted genius. He knew that a woman had misdirected him. But hey....
The music gets in the way -- its too loud....
Len Hummel, ladies and gentleman.
The film industry is just based on cgi and super hero's there's not much acting talent around anymore which is a shame just filled with gym bunny's and tarts
What's w / the crazy music
I wish Richard Burton had stayed with Sybil and not be so ambitious to move on to the Hollywood merry go round and Elizabeth Taylor and stuck to the stage.
Hooray For You. blink well-to-do !!!
I'm always interested in how people grow up especially when their addicts. I just read about Richard Burton's childhood and I thought why wouldn't he be an addict.
His mother died two years after he was born. His father was an alcoholic who worked in the Welsh mines 6 days a week 12 hours a day. He was sent to live with his sister at 2 years of age and apparently abusive husband. He saw little of his father and had something like 7 or 8 brothers and sisters.
He was adopted by his teacher whose name was Burton and who turned him into a great actor and showed him how to be posh. He went on to get a scholarship and get into acting and the rest is history, however his childhood demons never left him and eventually did him in at only 58. He had a hell of a life and career.
The final thing is his father lived until he was 80 which I find amazing after all those years in the mines and drinking all that booze and told Burton he didn't approve of his career as an actor. Talk about gaul.
So really it all makes sense. What an interesting but tortured life but you show me an addict of any kind and you'll usually find some childhood trauma and or parental neglect.
god love him and any child that suffers a traumatic childhood.
Shame he chose to be buried where he did and not his welsh hometown of Pontrhydyfen.Maybe he thought he'd already given enough to his welsh family and friends.
Taylor eroded his genius, too funny
What did Burton die from?
Brain aneurysm.
@@Missditabomb and abuse of body & soul via drink & cigarettes. possibly some prescription drugs as well.

His childhood is where it went wrong however without the screwed up childhood and him eventually moving in with his teacher who became his mentor we never would've heard of Richard Burton. Good luck bad luck whose to say.
Ridiculous way of listening to Vivaldi. Unbearable to watch. Poor Moonlight Sonata. Pity.
