  • Steve Luff describes how to improvise on the Chromatic Harmonica (C) in the key of F# minor and A major. Lesson 4 of 12.
What to learn to play the Chromatic Harmonica in every key? Why not try starting with the minor pentatonic scales. Minor pentatonic scales are a fantastic place to start, particularly for players who want to play Jazz & Blues.
I like to think of the minor pentatonic scale as the backbone of my improvisation with offshoots of other scales & modes to accompany it. Quite simply tho it can be used as a standalone scale. Ask any blues guitarist & they will more than likely tell you just how much this scale is used.
…AND REMBER that each minor pentatonic scale has a relative major scale that you can also play along to e.g the A minor pentatonic scale can also be played over the key of C major etc. I recommend taking a look at the Circle of Fifths if you are unfamiliar with this concept.
Learn to play the Chromatic Harmonica:
Unlike its diatonic counterpart the Chromatic Harmonica enables the player to perform in all 12 keys. This is incredibly advantageous to Chromatic Harmonica players as they are able to switch musical keys in an instant. Chromatic Harmonicas can be found in all genre’s of music but are often associated strongly with Classical and Jazz music. Whilst simple to achieve a great sound and perform in the key of C major and A minor. This instrument can be challenging when first venturing into exploring all 12 keys.
This video is aimed at introducing beginners to take their first steps playing and understanding the Chromatic Harmonica in all 12 keys. It is also aimed at players who have not yet ventured into improvising on the instrument. The practical approach introduced by myself (Steve Luff) in this video involves utilising the minor pentatonic scales. Minor pentatonic scales are only comprised of five notes and offer players a great flexible approach to improvising on the instrument.
The use of the slide on the Chromatic Harmonica can be daunting. This tutorial not only provides clear examples of when to activate the slide but also offers examples on how it can be used to add musical flavour to your playing technique. Providing you with a rich Jazzy and Bluesy tone.

Hi Steve - opening piece was really nice. I’m not a harp player myself but the opening piece really reminded me of Larry Adler who I got to see just before he passed. You did a good job. I’ll have to try and catch you playing locally sometime

Cheers Marc. That’s very kind of you to comment. That’s amazing that you got to see Larry Adler. I’m very jealous. That would be amazing if you are able to make it to a gig sometime. I will check out your channel this week, looks great 👍.

I really enjoy your simple and straight forward lessons Steve. Shown with tabs and played with smooth and gentle backing tracks makes these lessons probably the best I have seen yet. Thank you very, very much. I will be eagerly awaiting your next video. I see you are going around the circle of fifths but can you please do 12th position next? I think it is the most gorgeous sounding and very useful position. It is F major and D minor. This one will take the player to a lot of places musically. Thanks again!!!

F Major & D minor are due to make an appearance in lesson 7 Bruce. Apologies that I can not get to it sooner as I have already started preparing the videos in between.
I will make sure to do a longer well thought out tutorial on that key though as I agree with your comment that it is a very useful & practically used key on the Chromatic harp. Many Thanks.

Hi Michelle. Thank you for the kind comment. I will most certainly be back to finishing the series off. I have had to have a fair bit of time off - due to an issue with my throat! Long story short my tonsils have been removed but I'm pretty much back to full strength now. Pleased you are enjoying them. Will hope to get one produced asap.

@@SteveLuff Oh dear... that must’ve been horrible I know getting tonsils removed as an adult can be a very unpleasant thing, glad to hear you’re feeling better and are doing well. 😊 I look forward to more in this series. Would you also consider doing a basic series on all 12 major scales on the chromatic? Thanks Steve!
