- Whilst attending the Severn Valley Railway Spring Gala it was a must to pop over to the Lickey incline in Worcestershire, and film the spectacle of 'Lizzie' attacking the mighty 1 in 37 of this bank with assistance of two Pannier tanks 7752 and 9600. on the return working of a Special from Solihull to Bristol. I have never seen so many people in attendance, with droves arriving every minute, making filming very difficult. The result is short, but full of action, and I hope you enjoy the results of spending several hours in a field with temperatures running into the twenties
Thanks Wayne, it was worth the standing in the hot sun for hours....Bob
Thanks Keith it was a sight I shall never forget...Bob
That was great, loved seeing those two little chuffers on the rear, looked a bit like two little kids hanging off dads coat tails... ha ha - so many people there too! amazing. Great catch though Bob, beautifully done as always, and such a lovely day for it. :)
Thanks Kristian, you were in the best location, but unfortunately I didn't have the time to search it out.....Your video from there is superb.....Bob
Thanks as always Walter...it was a great event...Bob
Just nine, and thanks for the praise......Bob
Really great to see and hear. With a large crowd to watch
That's the second time we've both been on the bank and not met. The good news this time is that I was on the train!! Great shot of the Princess. It is a scandal that more people weren't on the train, Vintage Trains carn't run these tours without support, I carn't see them running one again. Lucky we have some good shots from this one. Cheers.
Thanks Justin, you should have seen the cars along this narrow lane...unbelievable...Bob
Thanks again for your support...Bob
Leon, I am deeply flattered by such praise, and it is greatly appreciated. It was a wonderful day and one I shall never forget......Regards...Bob
Fantastic video Bob,an experience to remember & all the people that were there. It was a great sound . (C&A)
That is worrying Keith, not only for future Charters, but for the future of these operators who have a difficult time of things at the best of the time........Bob
Excellent shots Bob, I think the further back shot worked well and it looked like everyman and his dog was out !. Steve
Good one Bob. Like how you kept the camera rolling at the end even though we couldn't see them to keep the sound going. Will be remembered for quite a while I should think. All the best...Tim.
Thanks Chris, a collection was made around the field towards a local Hospice, and most contributed willingly....Bob
A fantastic film Rob. Lizzie well in control and the firemen working hard on both the 57xx'. A like from me. Barry
Fantastic shot Rob. I know what you mean about the heat and waiting around. I were stood up at Pikes Pool waiting for 3 hrs in the sun to video until it came up the bank! Certainly worth it though as I'm sure you'll agree. Excellent angle and great that you took a wide angle panning shot as the people in the foreground adds to the shot a bit rather than detract from it. Very enjoyable viewing and thanks for uploading - Hayden.
While it's nice to avoid having lots of people in a video, it does show that something special and different is happening that so many people turn out to see it. I was there 2 years ago and it was just the same. Keith
Well caught Rob, and well worth waiting for. Summer comes early in that part of the world I guess!! Great video with lots of chattering steam.
Thanks very much for your kind comments and I whole heartily agree...Bob
Steam on the Lickey is always special Bob and you got a nice shot from that location. I see what you mean about the crowds, a lot weren't photographing but just came to see the spectacle.
Thanks for your comments Ken, in steam days the bankers up this incline were not coupled and simply drew back at the summit before returning to Bromsgrove. In this instance, I imagine they are coupled on and holding on for grim death....Bob
Thank you very much for those encouraging comments Hayden, I found I had to move six times to get this spot, but the whole experience of seeing this train was unforgettable....Bob
Great sight and sound Bob. You did well amongst the crowd
Mike
Thanks Mike, I had to move several times to ensure a clear view.....Bob
Thanks Paul, we were up for the SVR Spring Gala, and popped over to get this whilst we were there....it was an amazing sight, and one I'll never forget....Those two locos at the rear did indeed look as though they were being dragged up the 1 in 37 gradient...Bob
I've been waiting to see this for some time, and I'll remember it forever.....truly magnificent experience for all the senses...Thank you once again both....Bob
Thanks Jeff, I've only been here once before, but I've never seen so many people turn out to see a special......Bob
absolutely superb...thank you very much!
It was indeed Stu, an amazing compilation of sights and sounds never to be forgotten. A young man and his dog did do the rounds, and collected money from the crowds in the field for a local Hospice...so everyone was happy....Bob
Thought you might be tempted, along with the milling throng. The sunshine certainly brought the crowds out. Tanks looked impressive; nice to see them out on the mainline and, together, with a greater tractive effort than Lizzie! Looked like they were doing the majority of the work as well!!
I think you captured them better than most, although there are an excellent crop of videos following this excursion.
Mike
Fantastic stuff Rob, simply excellent.
I know Mike, we were up at the SVR Gala, and after missing Lizzie's run up last year, I was determined not to miss it this year, and with the proposed electrification of the line...these opportunities will become rarer. Those panniers were hanging on for grim death, you should have seen them over the top of the summit, you couldn't see the con rods :o).....Bob
That thumbnail... gosh! Great capture of a marvellous loco!
Thanks Benji, it was a wonderful sight, and I've never seen so many people at that location.
Thanks Ervan, this incline is one of the most famous in the UK, and to see a steam locomotive work up it in such style, is a real treat....Bob
Thanks Tim, this is hallowed ground for me, and to experience these runs up it sends shivers up the spine...and creates unforgettable memories...Bob
It was a special sight Rich, as this is one of the steepest incline on any main line in the UK...as more and more people arrived to see the spectacle, I had to move further and further away from the line to the top of the field, but the results were quite good in the end....Thanks again.....Bob
Thanks Dave, my apologies for not replying earlier, but I'd missed your comment....I have seen your excellent footage...great work....Bob
Having watched your clip I hadn't realised that this was such a crowd puller - I must make the effort and take a look one day in the future. Well captured as usual and very enjoyable.
Wow,that was good, what a crowd to,it's a wonder the farmer never charged to watch from his field.
Thanks Craig, that's very kind of you to say so, and great to hear from you again....Bob
It was my plan to find it John, but lack of local knowledge got me involved here.....despite arriving two and a half hours before the train...I must get directions from you if I ever get up there again.....Regards....Bob
Excellent Bob, a huge gathering as you say.
Thanks Rob, it's been a wonderful couple of weekends full of steam, and a real tonic after such a drab Winter...Hope all is well with you.....Bob
They ran 4 TSO's two of which were completely empty :-( They ran the two empties to make the train look better. Vintage Trains have had to pull another tour over Copy Pit due to lack of bookings. We need people to pull together and support these runs. Especially, The Shakespeare Express as it's a regular run during the summer. Cheers Bob.
This is what I have to put up with when filming main line steam Steve, see how lucky you are up there. I moved six times as the crowds got bigger to end up where I was....but I loved every minute of it....Bob
thought I'd seen them all, but your attention to the event, the atmosphere, and never to close when not appropriate, was as usual spot on, a clear picture of the panniers slowing for the signal check, and then their rods flailing as they puffed their little hearts out, was a marvelous sight, the sound also to match , glad you let it run as the headed away, lovely, cheers.
Bob the sound alone was just amazing loved it thanks great video
I'm glad you're able to appreciate it Keith, It was two years ago when 70013 and the Black 5 tackled the climb that I was there last...a truly magical place...Bob
Amazing piece of video Bob, thumbs up & fav'd. Amazing how many people this brought out, and not all just railways enthusiasts, think the weather certainly helped =) I was up on the field at Pikes Pool Lane, I'd never seen so many people out for mainline steam before!
Absolute power and Music to ones ears,
Thanks Dave, she's always been a magnificent loco.
It was an unforgettable experience Adam....Thanks as always...Bob
Thank you Ernest, they made an unforgettable sight as they climbed the Lickey, and I haven't seen so many spectators in many a year....Bob
Thanks Ger, wouldn't have missed it for the world...saw you at Kidderminster on the bridge later in the day....Bob
What a fantastic video Bob. Great sight and sound. Great to see such a large crowd at what looks like a superb vantage point. Regards, Jeff.
Thanks Dave, a weekend at the SVR with a dash over to film this ...fantastic sight....Bob
I think Lizzie handled that bank pretty well,it looked a great sight as well, lovely locomotive.
I am getting a little behind with the video's at the moment, was going to the NYMR Saturday, but i cannot,i have to be at the seafront as we are saying farewell to a friend of mine who died a few weeks ago,we are taking his ashes out to sea,i do not know why i told you this, bit never mind..............John
Thanks Phil, if I'd had ice cream, then I'm afraid in that heat I'd have scoffed the lot!....I've never seen anything like it, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world....Bob
Thanks John, you don't have to explain, I fully understand, we've had two family bereavements recently, and it puts this on hold at times....Bob
Thank you, and I am delighted you have enjoyed it...Bob
So THAT was why you weren't grinding coal? What a lot of people! But it's great to be part of it, eh? Cracking good shot as usual - SVR to follow? . . . . Alan
Cracking video Bob. Well done.
Hi Bob, just watched this as I had no idea you had visited the incline. I don't go because of the inevitable crowds but I did film them near Birmingham that day. Ray Churchill was on one of the panniers. Best wishes, Brian.
This was the second time I'd visited this location on the Bank Brian, I've never seen so many people there, I had to move several times to get away from the ever growing crowds....But it was worth it in the end, and to think this was 8 years ago!!....Best wishes....Bob
Thanks Greg, if it hadn't been for your excellent instructions, I'd have never found it in 2010....Hallowed ground for sure...Bob
Nicely captured Bob: featuring the crowds gives a very good overall impression of the atmosphere on the day. Apparently some were already in position at the best spots when I was filming at Corston at 10:15 i.e. a 7 hour wait! Alan
Thanks Hayden, I wanted to find your location, but failed....it was an occasion that I will never forget for many reasons....Bob
Absolutely superb camera work there Bob, and what a show it was! One of the best videos I've seen of this, that's for sure!
That was definitely worth the time that you spent in that field, Bob. Great view of the bankers going down the incline, and then assisting Lizzie on the way up. It is good to see 9600 looking so smart- the last time I saw her in action was in 1967 (on my vid Steam & Trams) at Merthyr Vale Colliery....Mervyn
Great video Bob. What a wonderful sight that made but it was all over so quickly. Can even see me in the next field!
I missed Lizzie last year Austin, and determined to get it this year, as I had my family with me, it wasn't easy finding alternative locations. I had to move around this location several times as people constantly came between me and the line.....But to see the train passing was an unforgettable sight.....Bob
I had already booked the SVR before I knew about Lizzie, so that was a superb opportunity to get steam on the Lickey before it's electrified. SVR being uploaded as we speak, and will be available later today...Bob
Thanks Mervyn, I must have moved half a dozen times, as people kept standing in my field of view, so resorted to the stand away from the crowds option, which worked reasonable well....I have some images of 9600 at Merthyr Vale Colliery in the 60's in my collection.....Send me your EMail privately, and I will send them to you......Bob
Bob
excellent video Bob :-)
Thank you Jamie, much appreciated...Bob
I fully understand Wayne, dealing with so many messages and trying to watch and comment on videos can get to be hard work....Thanks for watching....it's greatly appreciated...Bob
"Du grand spectacle" (great show) as they say in France. Thank you Bob.
Philippe
Thank you for those kind and much appreciated comments Phil.....Bob
Ha ha Ryan, in fact I arrived before the crowds, then they all decided to join me in their hundreds.....Having said that the atmosphere was electric as the train approached....Bob
Thanks very much, it was unusually warm for this time of the year in the UK, and I'm sure those panniers had little if any affect on the trains movement...Bob
Thanks John, just watched yours excellent upload...Bob
Ha ha, I'm sure you're right Bob. Lizzie was certainly thrashing at the bank! Ken
I sure did! Thank You Dave. . .
Superb video Bob!! Well worth the wait, a lovely sight and sound. Well done to the crew involved with the charter and locos.
Thanks for Sharing!!
P.S. The farmer could of made a fair bit of money with the crowds in the field!
Lucky you Keith, I thought this train was fully booked, although I was surprised to see it only had nine on. I agree that we must support these runs, otherwise they will disappear especially in this current climate....Bob
Thanks for your kind and appreciated comments Barry, I have fallen hopelessly behind with RUclips, so I expect to catch up with your videos soon....Bob
So you decided to join the crowds of hundreds to see this fine 'concert'? Like you say I too was amazed at how many had turned up for this despite my third visit to the Lickey in two years. Its so little wonder why the main road nearby was gridlocked, but looking at this just shows how popular the Lickey Incline gets it's name
It was an amazing sight for all that attended...Thanks for watching...Bob
Great video Bob and I like how you include people and scenery in it as it adds a realism to it [as if it needed any more!]. All locos in great form and I liked the sight of the two bankers drifting down the incline as in days of old so to speak! Do you know if they are coupled up when they are banking or do they have some kind of slip coupling to allow to train engine to proceed without stopping? I thought I heard right at the end of the vid, the bankers exhaust stopping. Thanks. Ken
Excellent capture Bob, it's always really awkward at the Lickey for steam, but that's twice now you've got decent shots of something you thought you'd never see :) Greg
It isn't the easiest of places to film I must say, especially with this sort of event. I must have moved half a dozen times to get a clearer view of the line. It was a wonderful spectacle to witness, and one I will remember for many years to come...Many thanks for your kind comments....Bob
You must try and get there Nigel, it's one of those iconic locations from Steam Days....Bob
Thanks Alan, as well as finding it almost impossible to get a good location, parking the car was utterly impossible unless you were there hours before....Bob
Now,that's a fun video to watch. With an interesting combination of power for sure! You semmed to be standing on a bit of a hill for a great location. As alway's well done bud! Rich
You're welcome, and thank you for your kind comments...Bob
Thanks for watching, the train had been shortened due to lack of support, and neither Lizzie or the Panniers were slipping, the beat of the panniers was fast trying to keep up with Lizzie....Bob
great video bob i was at virgo bridge filmed on two cameras john uhm121
Superb, as always. How many did she have on?
Lizzie looked great, but so did her bankers, great to see,
