Thanks for the tip on the Electric Clutch seizure. All good answers Taryl.
I fixed many a small engine with your tips ,my favorite was the drilling of the main jet to get the engine to not surge worked like a charm ,Thanks guys
I just bought a mower with a seized engine. And yep ,,the electric clutch bearing was wasted. Changed it and it runs great!!

Hey taryl.......glad you mention that you can go from horizontal to vertical motor and viseaversa I done it with my old Vermeer 186 stump grinder here in NJ people want to much for an old opposed twin so I had to do it, now I have a spare to rebuild.
A pest on a quest😆 enjoyed that, thanks guys👍
Midweek snack!!! Thanks dudes!!!👍🍺

Dirty cooling fins on a B&S V-Twin will cause the valve guides on the exhaust circuit to seize and bend push rods.
But when cooled off an the fins cleaned and new push rod, I've had them to start and run just fine.
You always make me smile
Thanks Taryl for the great info 👍
Gosh... I have saved myself so much money listening to and watch this channel. Would you guys be open to suggestions for future repairs?
Your videos are great! I fixed my mower from watching. Keep them coming!
How do you keep your mower from watching?
@@hcox1111 lol
@@mistysellers8099 I keep my mower in the garage that way it can't watch.
@@hcox1111 normally I just cover it with a sheet...kind of like a parakeet. Lol
Manny thanks to Slippers for this question! Also thanks to Taryl and Mr. Cameraman, great vid!
Love them Q&As excellent video
YAY
You explained that Gas Hydro-lock very well. That happened to me on two different occasions...A real hazard to happen to a guy. I purposely installed fuel isolation valves inline and upstream of the fuel filters because of it. The problem with the shut off valve is if you forget a lot, you can be pulling the rope starter like a fool before you realize you had installed a fuel shut off on that equipment, so label that equipment ("Fuel Valve; ON to start, OFF to store). Before starting any mower check the oil level and smell the oil for Gasoline like Tarly says. He should be a trade school teacher of some sort. He can teach!
That is why I like some models of the Tecumseh engines, the intake is uphill from the carburetor and will never fill the cylinder with gasoline. Not all models but some.Same on the updraft Briggs.
back in the 50s one neighbor had a hand start 1938 john deere A that he had a snow bucket on for clearing the driveway etc. he filled the gas tank with 15 gallons of gas. parked it in the shed. when he came to use it. it started up but soon quit. ALL fifteen gallons of gas were in the crankcase. he forgot to turn off the fuel valve when he parked it and the needle/seat in the carb leaked just enough to run over into the engine. it was all gravity feed. did not hurt the tractor. just drained out the crankcase. new oil and refill gas tank.
Your the best
I've learnt a lot from you. And your entertaining.
Love the videos.. Y'all silly.. But very informative.. Keep up the good work..
Thank you grass rats garage and there's your dinner love your videos
Thank you Taryl.
👍”...ya weirdo” 😂😂
I’d like to see all the characters each son plays.
Ronnie J. Is my fav. -You Guys are talented👍
Instagram? Is that when Grandma shows up suddenly? Bam! Insta-Gram! I look for information on small engine repairs and after I am entertained with your antics I have learned what I am looking for. You get the camera shots and break it down Barney style so there is no question on what has to be done. Thank you for doing all you do. I work on my mower mostly and mini bikes, go karts and stuff like that to get running again. I bet your shop is well known locally for the quality work.
Great video Taryl
A very common type of hydrolock for the homeowner who uses a walk behind mower is oil leaking past the rings if the thing is tipped up to change the blade and the oil leaks past the rings into the combustion chamber. I try to only leave it up on its side very briefly. Pulling the plug and rinsing the cylinder with a tiny bit of gas will get you going again; after you yank the string a few times with the plug out. Not good for dinner though.
Thanks
These two are hilarious together, i like the teryl on his chopper over to slippers house to hang with him and see what slippers made or is doing.
Taryl, I very much enjoy and appreciate the informative and entertaining videos. Kudos to the whole crew. I'm going to work on a Tecumseh LEV 80 with a date of manufactured of 9159 for a charity thrift shop. At a glance, the primer bulb was as hard as a carp. Have you done a video on removing and installing the primer bulb on that type of engine? If so, I've missed it (and I've seen a lot of your videos). If you could point out such a video, that would be great. If not, do you have any pointers, so that I don't inadvertently damage the assembly? Thanks. --- Ted
Whooooo Whooooooooo Whooo
How come some motors require the push rod clearance to be adjusted after a certain amount of run time?
Good tip on the electric clutch bearing. I wonder how many engines have been condemned unnecessarily only to find out the clutch bearing was seized? Thanks for the mid-week snack and keep up the great work.
Jaryl Jack Derriere when are y coming out with a video?
@@haroldanderson2781 Howdy Harold, I have been working on getting my shop ready for video production but it has taken me way longer than I expected. I have more than a few pokers in the fire right now and since grass cutting season busted wide open I'm swamped with work so my attention is somewhat divided. I don't want to go into this halfcocked and if I'm going to do something I am going to do it with excellence to the best of my ability. I appreciate your patience but I will be producing videos asap. It's good to hear from you and just give me a little more time and I'll be up and running. Junior said he will help me all along the way and I've been in contact with him lately. Take care, JJD
LOL, had to watch a 5 minute ad just to get into my favorite channel, then into the Q&A another 5 minute commercial @ :14
use ad block, haven't seen a commercial on YT in years. It's blocked 26 ads in the last half hour.
Had many small engine powered pieces of equipment over the past 45 years and the single best thing for long engine life would be to use a quality synthetic oil 10-30 or 20-50Wt. and change it at least once a year for the average user. It's cheap insurance compared to a new engine. Have several 30+ year old engines still running fine on snow blowers and mowers.
When sharping and balance a blade? Do you still have to balance the blade after you sharping it. If you have two bolts holding the blade on instead of only one bolt. Where you need to balance the blade for only one bolt hole
I see the man is back!!! Slip man ,👍😁👍😁
Thank you for some great tips!!! Grass Rats Rule!!!!
When my Scrub cadet 27hp was new the engine would stop at a point where the starter wouldn't budge it. I had to open the hood and turn the engine a little by turning the fan on top with my hands. (Compression stroke? ) Finally I replaced the starter and haven't had a similar problem since. The new starters are much stronger.
Hello. Speaking of opposed cylinder engines; Which of the newer Kohler engines most resemble the old Kohler KT-17 Series 1 & 2?.
You misted one, when it comes to engines locking up or seizing, the fly wheel magnets can come loose and lock up the engine.
I really hoping that someone put a thumbs down on accident...who can’t love anything that Taryl and the Crew does???
Anthony Cox, well some people are just jerks.
Thumb downs probably wanted to know HOW to convert from vertcal to horizontal; Hell, that's all over youtube.
Some, ya just can't help..
Thumbs down are coming from all the E-Z works reps.
I actually hated the first video I saw because I was having a rotten day working on an engine and needed a quick answer due to time constraints. Then I saw another video and can't stop watching them. I work on engines often and Taryl either does something that I do or I learn from him. He always has the answer and is very funny!!!
When I was a kid we had a self propelled mower that was both horizontal and vertical shaft. The vertical shaft ran the blade and the horizontal went to a chain connected to a propulsion system. The system was a frame that had an axle and two cogged plastic gears on the ends. When you pulled the engagement handle, the cogs would lower until they touched the front wheels. The cogs and the front wheels had a matching pattern which fit together and caused the wheels to turn.
I'd like Slippers to ask if Taryl has done much work on the I/C petrol briggs air compressors - particularly the auto idle system on them. About to restore one and probably the engine will be the easiest bit to sort out... Cheers for the fun fellas from Oz - binge watched much of your content over the last two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it all.
Good questions and answers am still learning with no lawn mower
the newer honda 5.5hp engines don't seem to have a fuel filter the main jet plugs and a new carburetor is same cost as a carb kit. these engines are everywhere at the dairy farm i work and my pressure washer. it's the same problem over & over & over
I Had a Kohler 25 hp lock up. it wouldn't move an inch either direction. Thought it seized on the crank.. It tuned out to be that the starter shaft bent. It seized the whole engine. replaced the starter and all was fine.
Please more Q&A
I used Tractor Supply Kevlar belts and they only lasted for a couple of years at best, even one for a drive belt for the tractor fell apart. I went to the lawnmower shop thinking these guys should really know belts and the belt they sold me was worse that the TSC belts. Lately i have been using NAPA power equipment belts and they last and last and don't fall apart like the TSC belts. I bought new blades and belts for my deck from Stens. The new blades are on and I'm waiting to try the Stens belts. My Craftsman lawn tractor is over 30 years old so this has been going on for a while.
Hey Taryl. I need some of those face coverings. There was an add pop up but went to Taryl’s Apparel and didn’t see anything. I need some now. Gimme some dinner!
I’ve seen mowers where mice will build up a big nest under the flywheel shroud over winter, then when the owner goes to run it in the spring, the engine will overheat and seize. Got one given to me a couple of years ago that had that happen. Put a bit of oil in the cylinders, grabbed onto the pulley with a pipe wrench and it freed right up. Cleaned the mouse nest out and it’s been running fine ever since.
I wish I knew about moving the spark plug wire away from the spark plug opening when turning my engine over after it had Hydro locked with gas. That was one hell of a scary fireball! Luckily it burned itself out pretty quickly.
I’ve set my mower on fire like that once. ONCE. That got my attention.
Keep it real
In trying times .... it's nice to to have a little dry humor ..... (sound effects are a bonus) ... and of course get decades of experience and tips .... also loved the other video on how you started your repair business
Why do valve clearances in engines need adjustment? Why do some loosen and some tighten over time?
Taryl Fixes All IS THE GREATEST
I have a question Tayrl.
Can you still buy the Krohler V-twin engine blocks to built yourself a engine with??.
I found something I don't thing you ever talked about. My predator 301 cc wasn't getting gas, so I cleaned the carb and still had the same problem (with choke it stalls). I pulled the hose off the carb and saw that there was little to no gas coming out. So I cleaned tank, still same problem. There is a pet-cock on the tank, removed it and saw a 1/4" filter attached. It was clacked, so I cut it off opened the hole, and put it back together. worked great. added an in-line filter to replace it. Will this damage anything? Something you could show to your viewers in one of your builds/repairs. Keep up the great work.
I reckon as long as you have a filter it doesn't matter if it's in the tank or in the line - it ain't stupid if it works.
At 9:46 Slippers thinks he is Joe Biden, but he forgot 1 thing, he has to sniff the hair too.
LOL I was thinking hydrolock and then you said it. Great minds. keep it up. :>)
Loved the Pope-slap @9:49
What is your opinion on engines that you don't need to change the oil in
Slippers can you ask Taryl, what would cause a 2 cycle echo to soak the air filter with fuel when it's on a level shelf and to sometimes have an empty primer bulb. Models are Srm 230 and hedge trimmer HC152. Thanks. Great video as always.
Taryl ... what do you think of the Toro self propel mower? How do you diagnose and fix a push start on one
Trayl question, I have a Ferris z1500is engine starts right up, after running for 10 minutes the engine will not start, just cranks over no start, have spark, have gas flow have to wait a hour to two for the engine to start again....thanks
Have you done a video on fuel for small engines ? Mowers , weed eaters , chainsaws etc; I’m using 93 octane non ethanol in all mine , & I put a small amount of marine formula sta-bil in each tank full of fuel , is this a good combination or would some other type of additive be better or should I not use any additives & is ethanol fuel ok to use ? Thankyou for all your videos they have been very helpful to me & May God Bless
Michael j Canter Check out our monthly fuel additive experiment videos currently going on now. And there’s your dinner!!
What are your thoughts on "gator blades" for the toro super recycler push mowers? (Are the blades better the OEM?)
Taryl, why would my generator's vented fuel cap keep leaking out of the vent hole? I've replaced the fuel cap, but still the same problem, and it's not hot outside
I have a zeroturn mower with kohler courage 17 engine. Its locked up. What would be closes engine to replace it that i wouldnt have to do alot of re wirer??
How effective is the charging system of a riding lawn mower. And some Cub Cadets leave the headlights on all the time. Does seem like a drain on the battery.
Hey Taryl, does a compression release effect a compression test?
TARYL I LOVE YOU OK I LOVE U IM UR #1 FAN IM 17 AND I WORK ON SMALL ENGINES, I KNOW A GOOD AMOUNT OF STUFF RELATING TO SMALL ENGINES BUT UR VIDS HAVE LITERALLY HELPED ME LEARN MUCH MORE I LOVE YOU SO MUCH U INSPIRE ME. (p.s.) I love your spark plug necklace, is there a way I can get one of those I would wear it everyday
Check out this online store, William! Nice stuff!
Yes you can William. The online store has the spark plug necklace(aka "Sparky").
Not only that, but if you got money, you can even git you a Taryl bobblehead.
William, I started as a real young guy too. I went looking for all the old factory service manuals and repair books I could find. We didn't have youtube or internet then, but now, with books and vids, you will be well covered on these engines and machines.
I like libraries and used bookstores and yard sales, etc., that periodicalky get rid of manuals that don't sell well.
Hey Trayldactl, love your show. What do you think of the predator engines by harbor freight? Thinking of buying a chipper. Thanks in advance.
I've had an engine that felt seized it wouldn't turn at all it was the belt rusted to the pulley . I see that alot .
Like too see a tecumseh SSI conversion video ...😇
Great video! so why does my craftsman LT1000 run excellent till it blows a fuse and then immediately replace the fuse and continues to run excellent till the process repeats? Can't find any bare wires anyplace. Thanks
Use engine parts for props it'll help us visualize
What side do you turn a push mower over onto to clean underneath it
JD GT235 new Carb, new Fuel Pump, was running slow would not run high RPM's I got a new Air filter and now starts good and fast but once warmed up runs good do I need to do anything else are just keep running like it is?????
Do you ever work on older lawn boy mowers? If so, what are your opinions on them?
Hello Taryl. Are you planning on making more Q &A ?
cub cadet, 20hp courage engine....top of power pulley under the engine is full of oil, is there a oil seal on the crank at the bottom of the engine?
Don't touch my hair you weirdo 😂
Run into a good one that has me stumped. I have a 12.5 B&S flathead. That 4 min after the 1st startup it smokes so bad that you don't have to worry about the mosquito population for a week. But 1 minutes later it runs perfect the rest of the day. Even after you shut it off for an hour. But next day same thing all over again. It is blowing oil out the breather tube for 1 min after a 4 min warmup like clockwork. I have changed the head gasket and valve cover gasket. And even checked the valve clearance and guides. If it was a bad ring would it not quit smoking? This is the 1st Briggs that has got me stumped in over 30 years.
I had the charging magnets come apart under the flywheel and seize the engine on a 14.5 briggs
Taryl , I have a kohler 20 magnum that sucks oil into the combustion chamber when it's tilted to the right . Runs normal except when tilted right . It's on a Gravley Pro Master 300 , late 90"s vintage . I'm stumped . Compression is within 10 lb . What you think , thanks .
TARYL, I just bought a 04 LT1024 with a 24HP V-twin Briggs and the guy I bought it from changed the oil, belts, and filters religiously... The oil looks as clear as water... the mower sounds great and drives and cuts awesome, however after she heats up I can smell Wiffs of freshly burning oil.... at first I thought it was from transport after bouncing around on the trailer for about 75 miles but now I’m not so sure... I can’t seem to find any leaking oil anywhere, however under the valves on the exhaust manifold bolts I can see burnt-on oil on both sides... should I replace the valve cover gaskets? or maybe the head gasket? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated....I’m a new subscriber and your videos are awesome! 👏 👍🏼 😎
Question on a vanguard horizontal and a Kawasaki horizontal. same issue. How can gas be getting into the crankcase. needles and seats are clean--no doubt, vanguard on a golf cart engine swap and Kawasaki on a gator? Both have pulse fuel pumps and are not gravity fed carbetraitors.
