Another excellent video, even though the night didn't go the best way....however, always with a positive mindset, we always bring a good “fish “ to home.
Those shower caps are known troublemakers. You are right to blame it for the failed time-lapse. Great images, though, from the Sony! Excellent teaching moment for all of us.
Hi Richard. Really enjoyed this. Can really relate to your frustration and disappointment! I’ve been playing with pan and tilt and the nightsky so really get it. Persistence against all odds! I haven’t found a solution to the shower cap thing… commercial solutions are very expensive and don’t really cater for pan and tilt apparatus. Good luck! Once again your videos keep motivating me to keep going against the odds. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Cheers.
I guess we learned few things from this video. 1. Hard work always pays off 2. Always put blame on a shower cap 3. Don't forget to bring spoon when traveling 4. Make a check list for timelapse Great shots Mr. Richard!!!
Because of you, Richard, coming to Australia to photograph the night skies is my ultimate dream! This video was a great success as usual. Thank you and keep doing these stunning videos!
I can only imagine the expletives after waiting patiently for 4 hours to realise it hadn’t worked as planned but as you say you wouldn’t have been there otherwise. Great that you put out a rare failure to show us the pitfalls that can happen even with the best planning but you rescued it with some beautiful stills that you wouldn’t have got otherwise. Respect 👌
Another good vid Richard. We win some and occasionally we loose some. A lesson not learned, is knowledge not gained. Sometimes what we set out too do, doesn't work out but the little surprises that can change the night makes up for the frustration of things not going to plan.
Great video. I like that you are showing we all make mistakes. There is so much that can go wrong with a time lapse or star trail. It can be hard to remember everything when you are setting up. The waiting can be quite boring and it is really disappointing when you go to end it and realize you missed something. Glad you got the clear skies and stills in the end.
Fantastic video Richard, there is so much to learn from this video! We are always trying to be perfect but the truth is we are sometimes going to make mistakes. But as long as you enjoy the experience, it can't ever be a waste of time. Thanks for sharing!
His joy in communion with the Nature that surrounds him is contagious. The timelapse didn't go well but . . . It ended well with some great photos, it wasn't a wasted night, on the contrary. Thanks Richard for this video .
Thanks for sharing this rare fail Richard as that’s the only way we learn. Your enthusiasm still shone through though even if things didn’t go to plan!
Man I hate that for you! I know the feeling. You still got a killer sunset time lapse I love the color changing on the rocks. Also I felt it when you said "in a bit if a rush...as always" so true lol
As always I really enjoy it very much this channel , lovely landacapes places and awesome tips for timelpses, dont matter if was only 500 photos..it was awesome. Nice adventure out there. Live the rainbow and meteor caprured.
Awesome video Richard. What a great save with the stills after the time lapse incident. That mountain shot with cloud and milky way above is amazing. Thanks for sharing the adventure and glad to see you getting out there 👍🙏
This was a massive effort and I really felt for you when you realised what had gone wrong, but I love your attitude and approach. With such positivity, you managed to get some awesome images out of the night. Plus you walked away with a great experience. I think it's important to share content like this because there's so much others can learn from this. 👍
Thanks heaps Andrew. Yes I must admit that I was wondering if this was all going to be a waste of time when things fell apart along the way .. and I'm sure you know that feeling well when wanting to produce video content of our adventures. Thanks again for your encouragement.
The out of focus gave the video a nice vintage look. All in all, the combination combined made it another great video. Nice work as always. W.C.R.T. San Francisco
That was such a shame about your timelapse, especially after all the effort you put into setting it up. However, as you say it gave you the opportunity to do the stills..which look awesome. Thanks again for another great video.
Really enjoyable video with fantastic images ,easy to forget to do something when shooting complicated timelapses thats how we learn ,thanks for the inspiratoin and passion .
Interesting video Richard, sorry the Timelapse didn’t work out the way you expected it to, still these things happen in photography and even though it was a bit annoying you rescued some super stills from it, nice one! I think just watching you set up and prepare your gear for the Timelapse was a great insight to how much effort you put into your craft, that to me is professionalism ! That is why I enjoy watching your videos, because you put in the effort and you show us how things are done and explain exactly what your doing, I love that. Thanks again for another excellent video 😁👍
Thanks for your perseverance Richard, absolutely inspiring video even allowing for the auto ISO "shower cap" problem. I look forward to your next episode. Cheers from Adelaide.
Richard, absolutely marvelous video! Even with the “fail”, it’s still exhilarating to be out in nature, but then to have the opportunity to turn it into a huge positive, man The Lord & life are good! Thank you sincerely for the share. Cheers & please keep shooting & sharing.
Seems like that changing to auto ISO is what gets ya every time you forget a setting. Easy one to forget too, considering we always need to manual set that. Like someone else suggested below, a checklist is in order it appears for timelaspes. Just make sure the checklist gets a good safe home in the bag and or with the right gear, laminated and zip tied to it, so it too cannot be forgotten haha. Great memories and beats sitting around just watching tv and living a dull life anyway. You win either way, plus you got some cool shots.
Yes one small setting upset the whole night .. but there was so much cloud it wouldn't have been spectacular anyway. I agree about the checklist. It is a great spot to just sit and watch the world from above ...!!!
That did make me laugh, but it is actually very motivating to hear that the Master makes mistakes......even though he manages to pull gold out of the situation. Those stills were amazing!!!
I can't beleive that a man of your experience forgot the Golden Rule of photography, never work with kids, animals or Showercaps lol. Great trip out Richard, really glad you got some fantastic shots on the night.
Its hard Richard you are telling us the settings while on the other your brain is on the something else and you dont change to the auto ISO. I think we have all done this more then once Iam afraid. Great views Cheers
The Grampians never fail to deliver all sorts of weather, usually the opposite to what you desire. Regardless, you managed to salvage some images from your challenging nights adventure. 😁
Feel for you Richard but at least you got a result in the long run. As you said, with that level of complexity it's easy to miss things. From my flying background, I use checklists now to make sure I cover everything. I know it sounds over the top, but a well thought out checklist can save losing 4hrs of effort. For simple stuff, memory serves but at that level, I've learnt to make sure. Great video as always. Thanks.
Thanks for your insights Levin. Yes a checklist is the obvious answer . .but to be honest the cloud cover would have ruined the timelapse anyway for the most part .. It's a good reason to get back there at some stage for another try ..!!!
Another gem Richard! We’ve all been there with mistakes setting up & it proves that it can happen to anyone! Still turned out a great night with great results! 👍😀p.s.you need an affiliate link to the Zeapon pan & tilt because I’m saving up to get one! 🙏
Something about best laid plans 😂. I've had a few of these recently, it is most certainly a shared experience of any landscape astrophotographer (especially with time lapse). Great pivot to make lemonade from lemons. Sometimes I feel this is as an important a skill as anything with landscape photography.
Yes I think you're right Dominic. But I was very fortunate on this occasion as the clouds were very thick until the very end when I just happened to be at the top of the mountain.
Beautiful capture’s! A polarfleece beanie would be beneficial to carry with you. Also place a few plastic spoons in your car and put one in all your camera bags. I even carry one in my jacket pocket so I always have a spoon just Incase you forget your spoon.
Nice job Richard, Always a Positive Silver side to a dark situation. 🤩 love the shower cap hack in rainy weather 😄. Would your Timelapes plus Intervalometer if used would’ve made a difference or that’s out the equation due to Zeapon controller ?
Hey Richard, great video and great lesson learnt. Re thinking on your feet and actually making that "Purse out of a Sows Ear", to reverse a old saying.
Great vid Richard. Love the fact that you just show it how it is. Just like when you see a pro sports person make a mess of things, it shows the rest of us that even the best don't get it right all the time and that is ok. Thanks for being real in an era where fake and falseness abounds. Cheers
Hi Richard we learn as much or more from our mistakes. Quick question what are the tripod collars you mentioned at the start of your video that you placed the rock on?
Thanks for watching Ray. Well I have a video coming out soon which will describe them in detail. It's something I've made to suit the purpose and stop the tripod from moving.
Sorry Your Time lapse didn't workout as you hoped Richard but we all make mistakes we end up Kicking ourselves for later! Some Questions for You , # Can you set the Zeapon PONS pan and tilt device to a continuous movement like you can with the Genie Mini's? As that is how I normally do mine when just doing a pan time lapse and then I just use my View+ to control the camera and set the Interval ! #Also how did the Zeapon PONS pan and tilt device go with the wind was there any bumps in the footage because of the Wind?
Thanks for watching John. Yes you set it to crawl very slowly over a few hours no problem. That's something the Edelkrone can't do reliably. The wind is always a worry but I haven't had too many problems with this setup.
Following the footsteps of my mentor, I was thinking of you last night up on the cool mountain top free of Mosquitoes that were utterly crazy here last night. I can see why you picked this location as the terrain is just breathtaking. Love the concept of the automated pano head - very cool results. Just to confirm, does the Z6 not have the same intervalometer capabilities as the Z6ii?
Thanks a lot for watching Rob. Yes the original Z6 has most of the same features of the Z6ii except the ability to power via usb and also the ability to shoot a 4k video of the timelapse at the same time as shooting the raw images. With the Z6 you can only do one or the other.
I often ask myself if I do nighttime time-lapse for the photography or the chance to sit under a tree, under the stars, in complete silence with a flask of soup, flask of tea and, whatever else I could grab before leaving. Tastes better out there somehow and the sense of serenity is unmatched. (We have wild boar here so, a tree I can shin up quickly is indispensable) Any new equipment (a rare thing) makes me nervous. Have I set it up right? Will it work? Have I forgotten anything? Then again, if the sky decides to misbehave, the results will be below par anyway. Just keep trying.
Another great video Richard. I have to ask, what temps were you getting atop that mountain? I know you're having your Winter at the mo, but here I am with temps hovering around the low 40ºC and watching you climb a mountain in a puffer jacket and gloves....!! Love that 1st still and the vertical one.
Thanks heaps for watching Phil. It was around 5 - 6 degrees C up there, probably with added wind chill factor .. but not too bad. Don't worry, we get heaps of 40 degree weather in the summer here. . I hibernate during those days.
And welcome to the wonderful world of timelapse problems and fuck ups 🤣 Shit I can’t even count how many of these problems I’ve hit on my timelapse work over the years. Battery, triggers, firmware, weather, motion control. But in the end it all clicks and you get that magic. Well done Richard 🤙
Haha, yes all very true Josh. I guess we have to hold onto all of this stuff lightly and have a good laugh at the end .. but I still loved my time on the mountain.
Great vid Richard. Again a lovely location. o you leave all your gear unatended up on the hill ? I am very trusting, but not that reusting, I don't think I could do that, certainly not here in europe. What wasn't clear in the vid, do you use an external power supply for the z6ii ? I am also not sure I would want to hike up that mountainpath in the dark! I must try out the z6iis interval timer, up until now I have used dlsrdashboard to do the setup but unfortunately, due to Apple's weird rules, the app nolnger works! A real shame as it was a) cheap and b) worked very well.
He's in the parking lot so he knows if it's empty, no one is up there. Just like you, very few will go up in the dark and who else would it be anyway? Fellow photographers who are far less likely to steel someone else's gear anyway. right? It far more risky, that someone bust into his car while up the hill than anyone to go up and take anything from up there.
Thanks again for watching David. This location really only has one access point and I'd know if anyone else was there. Australia isn't like Europe or the USA or UK . it's a quiet place with plenty of space. I didn't use an external power supply for this night, that's why the battery was nearly dead at the end. But I do often use a usb-c power bank.
Lol, thanks for showing us that even God makes mistakes, and that after making said mistakes, goes on to make some beautiful art, just like when he made me! lol :/
Well I have the Genie system as well Kris. Haven't used it much lately .. I must get it out again. But the Syrp app can be a problem sometimes I reckon.
Hello Richard! I received the motorized pan head, and I noticed that both intelligent timelapse and customized timelapse features are not working in the Zeapon Lab app. It tells me, "At least two key points should be set", and both feature pages are not displaying. I just want to know if these features can be used with pan head only because if not, I will have to return it back. Thank you very much.
Hello Mohammad. So I'm assuming you want to do a pan from one point to the next. So you have to set at least 2 keyframes in the first main screen to give the device the parameters necessary to do the movement. Yes you can use a single pan head only. This video goes through the app settings, although it was released before some of the features were available. ruclips.net/video/VKq289nhAKA/видео.html You can also see from this video how to use the app at about 2:33. ruclips.net/video/7MO4KHqnoYs/видео.html
YES I figured it out and it is AMAZING! Thank you wholeheartedly Richard for the information. Please allow me to suggest you do a video on how to take an astro-timelapse from A-Z using the Zeapon heads. It will definitely be a tremendous one!
@@nightscapeimages.richard only kidding mate. I got to say, that epic fail got me going a little. I haven't been behind the camera for a very long time and I am starting to lose the ability to operate the buttons...... I think I have to book a tour with you soon to get me back in the saddle and get back in it....
From lemons to lemonade Richard another
great video and images of the night sky.
Thanks as always Steve
Good afternoon Richard. Thanks for reminding me how wonderful your counties RV parks are. We have visited a bunch in Qld...
Thanks as always for watching Paul.
Always enjoy your videos Richard and you been doing them so long now you just so comfortable in front of camera.
Yes it does get a bit easier over time.
Brilliant photos Richard. Your enthusiasm knows no bounds.
Thanks so much for watching Tony.
Another excellent video, even though the night didn't go the best way....however, always with a positive mindset, we always bring a good “fish “ to home.
Thanks for watching Rui. Yes there is always an adventure to be enjoyed.
So beautiful ! Great shots and wonderful place to be ❤
Yes it sure was Carole, thank you.
Great shots in the end. I say to a mate that we go regardless of weather because you never know what might happen.
That's very good advice Mark. Thanks for watching.
Those shower caps are known troublemakers. You are right to blame it for the failed time-lapse.
Great images, though, from the Sony! Excellent teaching moment for all of us.
Thanks as always Derek. Yes I'm looking at solutions to the shower cap dilemma.
Richard, those are beautiful with the clouds in them. I LOVE them. The sky is a beautiful bluish purple with the misty cloud. Good save.
Yes I really enjoyed those shots at the end. Thanks Russell.
Hi Richard. Really enjoyed this. Can really relate to your frustration and disappointment! I’ve been playing with pan and tilt and the nightsky so really get it. Persistence against all odds! Hollow Mountain, Great location for easy rock climbing or hiking. I was up to the hill top last year.
Yes it's a wonderful location for sure.
Great shots Richard Like they say when you have lemons make lemonade out of it.
Very good advice as always Jeff, thanks my friend.
It shows you're actually human! Great pictures in the end!
Oh I'm very human indeed Cory ..!!! Thanks for watching.
Lol as usual Richard you are funny when things don't work out for you the upside is you can always go do it again at a later date 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
Yes I'll be back there for sure.
Love the positivity Richard, and you're sharing that even the experts have 'shower cap' nights! Cheers
The shower cap is a must have Paul ... !!! I'll be back at this spot to complete my mission at some stage. Thanks for watching.
As I always say….not mistakes but learning opportunities. Thanks!!!!!!!!
Wise words as always Guy, thanks for watching.
Silver linings 😃. Great job recovering some epic shots, great lesson for us all, thanks for sharing
Many thanks indeed Jeff
great adventure video with drama, sticks and shower caps
and like in Hollywood always a happy end.
thanks 4 the video Richard
I love it

1. Hard work always pays off

4. Make a check list for timelapse
Great shots Mr. Richard!!!
Thanks for watching Milorad. I think that check list idea is a good one ..!!!!

We all have failures Garry. It was always a possibility considering the weather. . but the equipment mishap . .well human error . .what can I say.
Great video...I always learn from you! This time about having the tenacity to find the pearls hidden in the mud.🥰 Beauty!!!
Thanks so much for your kind comments Theresa, I really appreciate it.
Always was and always will be big fan of your work

Thanks a lot for watching Rob. Yes the original Z6 has most of the same features of the Z6ii except the ability to power via usb and also the ability to shoot a 4k video of the timelapse at the same time as shooting the raw images. With the Z6 you can only do one or the other.
I often ask myself if I do nighttime time-lapse for the photography or the chance to sit under a tree, under the stars, in complete silence with a flask of soup, flask of tea and, whatever else I could grab before leaving. Tastes better out there somehow and the sense of serenity is unmatched.
(We have wild boar here so, a tree I can shin up quickly is indispensable)
Any new equipment (a rare thing) makes me nervous. Have I set it up right? Will it work? Have I forgotten anything? Then again, if the sky decides to misbehave, the results will be below par anyway. Just keep trying.
All very good thoughts Philip. I agree that it's good to take the time to enjoy the view whatever the result ..!!!
Hallo Richard 👍
Thanks for watching my friend
Another great video Richard. I have to ask, what temps were you getting atop that mountain? I know you're having your Winter at the mo, but here I am with temps hovering around the low 40ºC and watching you climb a mountain in a puffer jacket and gloves....!! Love that 1st still and the vertical one.
Thanks heaps for watching Phil. It was around 5 - 6 degrees C up there, probably with added wind chill factor .. but not too bad. Don't worry, we get heaps of 40 degree weather in the summer here. . I hibernate during those days.
And welcome to the wonderful world of timelapse problems and fuck ups 🤣
Shit I can’t even count how many of these problems I’ve hit on my timelapse work over the years.
@@nightscapeimages.richard oh absolutely, seeing that end product is pure awe at times and makes all the fails that much more sweeter ae
@@joshmorgan3750 Couldn't agree more mate.
Lol, thanks for showing us that even God makes mistakes, and that after making said mistakes, goes on to make some beautiful art, just like when he made me! lol :/
Appreciate you watching Roy
Hi Richard. Just wanting to know how this new system of yours stacks up against Syrp Genie?
This video goes through the app settings, although it was released before some of the features were available. ruclips.net/video/VKq289nhAKA/видео.html
You can also see from this video how to use the app at about 2:33. ruclips.net/video/7MO4KHqnoYs/видео.html
YES I figured it out and it is AMAZING! Thank you wholeheartedly Richard for the information. Please allow me to suggest you do a video on how to take an astro-timelapse from A-Z using the Zeapon heads. It will definitely be a tremendous one!
@@mohammad_yazbek Yes I do intend to do that in the coming weeks for sure.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Omg, I will patiently wait for it!
Out of focus footage, wrong camera settings, cold, windy and an annoying shower cap, all the ingredients for a great video. 👍
Haha, yes I didn't do too well with the 1%ers did I on this one ..!!!!
Is this video sponsored by Subaru??? 😂😂🤣🤣
Haha. Should be. No sponsorships for me.
@@nightscapeimages.richard only kidding mate. I got to say, that epic fail got me going a little. I haven't been behind the camera for a very long time and I am starting to lose the ability to operate the buttons...... I think I have to book a tour with you soon to get me back in the saddle and get back in it....
