- In this video, I go over Mercedes-AMG engines over the years and rank them on a tier list. I rank all of the engines that I have covered in previous videos such as the m113k, m156, m157, and m177 just to name a few.

Note: at 8:13 - Since making this video the M159 is no longer the most powerful N/A V8 since it was surpassed by the 2023 Corvette Z06.
It's still the most powerful with a cross plane crank.
The fact that it kept that record for almost a decade still makes it S tier imo
hey id1ot you dont know anything about engines!!!M113 and M113k are the best engines from Mercedes and more!
Haha I was about to say....
M113K should be in the S tier for the reliability and tuning possibles
Agreed, one of the best supercharged V8s of all time.
Took the words out of my mouth, but I'm happy to agree with AMGmeister due to his knowledge on the model
The reason it’s not is because other people would claim he’s biased
I’d say A tier is fair and the reason why is because the SLR variant… it’s just that little bit better.
You forgot about m113k model for e, SL class, the one that has double oil plug and rubber o ring in oil system. That rubber becomes stone and later - engine becomes unreliable. Too much work to get to this 1 dollar o ring. If I interesting - look for m113k o ring videos.
I think it's unfair to rate the motors MOSTLY for their power. I think the M119, M156 and M113k are like one of the most iconic amg engines ever. Also for their reliability.
m156 is probably amgs most iconic engines but unfortunately it has many issues such as the headbolts, which were revised. But the oiling issues, valve buckets and camshaft wear were one of the reasons I wouldn't say that it's reliable at all.
He did the same with corvette engines, seemed to gloss over serious issues like how he glossed over the M156 headbolts. That is not a minor issue with that engine. Sure it was solved after 2012, but there are 5 years of the engine with a serious flaw.
@stfu7308 if you change the oil every 3 months, regardless of miles, and keep it well fed with nice gas and treat it nicely, you won't have any problems.
@@patricksmith1550 meh, relatively minor being that its a one-time and never again fix.
M156 ? Reliability ? Huh ??
M113 the most reliable engine Mercedes has made deserves better..
it is 1 of the greatest v8 engines ever made this tier list is meaningless
Are the non performance M113 motors (4.3, 5.0) as reliable as the 55 and K?
@@carsmusicandclothing7066 i would say there more reliable less to go wrong
@@JohnDoe-pf3ue then I wonder why the W220 S Classes (the S430 and 500 cars to be exact) were such notorious nightmares to own. I guess it was all electric gremlins
@@carsmusicandclothing7066 i can think of way worse cars w220 s class with m113 was a solid car apart from abc suspension issues.
M157 is way underrated. It should be A tier without batting and eye. The amount of tq this motor produces and the fact people are reaching well beyond 200k miles. . With just a tune and some bolt on this motor is capable 950bhp and over 1000 crank tq. wear like coolant lines getting brittle is a past the 100k mark. Which is an easy replacement. If someone is saying that this job is hard they shouldn’t be fixing engine. This engines produces gooobbbbsss of tq like no motor I’ve seen.
There’s a reason GAD uses this engine for insane power. It’s by far the strongest v8 made by Amg, very underrated indeed and incredible sound
@@r35spectgt-r84 strongest engine would be the M177 in the 2018+ E63s as it’s fully forged engine compared to the M157. M157 bent rods after 800wtq amazing engine though especially the bark when they were catless. I had a 2015 CLS63 and now a 2019 E63. The cls had 620whp on pump fuel my E63 “M177” has 730 whp both same fuel and same stage 2 catless downpipes and intakes. Goes to show the hot V style turbos is a better setup in the 4.0 compared to the 5.5 in the M157 there was more turbo lag for sure.
NM or LB torque?
Yeah man the video is so bad
Like I agreed at first but M275 is iconic yet doesn't deserve A tirr, then M177 better than M157 get outta here
I have this engine and he rated it way too low it’s S or at the least A. I fixed a coolant leak and coils it’s a great engine with some much capability. He has a great voice but he is wrong m156 has had real issues 😂 he put that above the M157
M157 is a Masterpiece, maybe the best they have ever build.
Fr
Cylinder coating wears so NO
But not for its rialibility… I have a M157 and I‘m sometimes a bit scared from what could coming…
The countless bent rods, open deck, issues even with something as simple as spark plugs. There are numerous issues with these.
The M157 MUST be moved up to the A tier lol. I feel like it was kind of either forgotten or overlooked by its predecessor and by its successor the M156 and M177/78. I do not own a car with the M157, but I've driven the old W212 E63 and I just love the powerband, the torque is amazing, and its just an effortless experience and much sharper than the 4.7l TT variant. Sounds amazing too, better than the more rev happy M177/78 4.0
Love mine.
Yepp the sound from the 5.5l is much nicer over the 4.0l
Agree. I own the ML63 AMG with the 5.5L BiTurbo M157 engine and the power and torque is amazing and the sound especially if you have modded it with a resonator delete sounds demonic! Much better than the later 4.0L version which sounds restrained in comparison. The M157 should be at least an A tier engine.
@@mhortop1 do the down pipes & an option to open valves you'll be amazed. Done this on my M278 GL500 the M157 is based OFF the M278 btw
@@iceManSwag thanks yeah I am definitely considering doing this! 👍
M157 engine deserves A tier. I own CLS63 AMG and sound way better than M177 or M156 sounds like lion roar. So much reliability and one single ECU tune puts out up to 700 hp.
Longtime fan, almost everything you’ve said in this video I agree with. I feel like the M157 should get a little more credit for being a completely savage engine but other than that I’m 100% with you,
Solved reliability of the M156 too
M157 “A” tier imo
Also M139 deserves to be “A” tier imo on hp per liter alone, one of the highest in production.
The newer model ones also have minimal lag turbos with electric spooling motor so that innovative tech alone makes it a breakthrough engine for Mercedes
M157 is in someof mercedes fastest cars like the e63 and my favourite mercedes the 2014 cls63 s amg an absolute beast and in my opinion the best looking amg
Fully agree the tech in that engine is next level
Nah for the garbage M139 reliability, it deserves to stay in C tier, same thing about the M156 major issues, but he's too fanboyish to admit that he put it next to M113K lmao
Subjective sure… but I think the general consensus is that M157 should be a tier above. It was an engine that put MB in another level of performance tier not to mention great reliability. It does look a bit funkier and not as appealing as previous generation engines or the new.
Totally agree with M157, amazing engine
Another "totally agree". I love my M157. Amazing motor.
Way off on the M157 placement. That engine was good enough to replace ALL M156 cars (except C63, they didn't want to outsell the E-class like they did with the NA w212 E63) however this motor is the flagship V8 that came with the best transmission AMG made, 4matic, eco start/stop, got below gas guzzler tax, and tune only puts out the same power as the 65 V12s tuned. It's an incredible motor and probably the best performance bargain as many M157 cars are still very close in performance to AMGs current M177 powered lineup. All in all I think it deserves S tier consideration.
But it sounds like shit.
@@SteveSUX2BUget a proper exhaust
I would put the M157 in A tier but maybe I’m just biased because I have it in my estate E63s 😄👌🏻
Agreed with literally every single placement, except for the M157 should still be in A. Yes it was not as "special" as the previous M156 & M113k but the tuning potential with a simple ECU tune at the time was crazy. You would need a Weistec supercharger on a M156 to make the same power as a M157 with nothing but a ECU tune. Modded stage 2 M177s today are still just putting down the same power as a tuned M157. It has its own issues yes, but is still more reliable than the M156. Its the last "deep rumbling" V8's AMG produced before the 4.0 M177-M178. Ethanol tunes finally came out for the M157 last year & along with a TCU tune, people have been running 10's in the 1/4 mile, trapping over 130mph+ in stock block, stock turbo M157's...its quite a feat
I fully agree with u. Especially in the cls63 s amg my favourite amg personally. That thing is a mf rocketship stock. I also think its the best looking mercedes.
Absolutely agree. I have this engine vehicle and stock 577hp. For 2k I can make my stock from 577hp add 166hp plus 561TQ add 246TQ just Weistec ECU tuning and nothing else. Insane. Can't wait, because 577hp now is a monster.
The 2012 ML63 has the m157 correct ? I’m looking to purchase one in a month or so. How much will it push w the ECU tune ? I’m curious.
@@microtechTeslaY Are you talking about the 2012 cls63’s ?
@@erico6117 Yep that has the M157. You'll be around 580WHP with nothing but a ECU tune...stock cats & everything. If you look at my recent video, I ran a 11.5 @ 127mph spinning a bit on 1st gear with nothing but a tune at the time
Great video, I would definitely swap the m156 with the m157 on the chart.
Performance the m156 was in marginal step down from the m113k, reliability the m156 was one of the most unreliable Angie motors. And not just little things, catastrophic failures with head bolts among the other things you're familiar with.
The m157 has been a proven platform for a long time, much better on gas. Yes, we are familiar with Taos 's video, but bent rods is a rare issue only with truly maxed-out engines.
I have owned many m113k and m157 and the 157 is better in every way!
It’s true the mountain of torque from the M157 should move it up, having had one for a few months now it is impressive 😁
Don‘t agree with your compartion M156 and M157. M156 has a lot issures more than the M157. M157 has the most potential of increase of power and torque. And chain problems already fixed up from 2013. And it is the last engine with high engine volume of 5,4 liter. Don‘t forget it was the first engine with biturbo, 4matic which was built in mercedes cars. And compare to M156 it was a complete different engine construction with high fuel efficency.
M112k 3.2 V6 twin-screw supercharged V6 should be moved up 1 tier up above and away from a tier with the 4 cylinder AMG turbo engine the M139 even though the M112k makes less power. The M112k is a pretty stout V6 and loves more boost if you can find one.
Here here! Absolutely agree. And it sounds good
I love my m112k deletef resonator sounds like a lambo in tunnels and with slight mods makes 390+hp :))
M157 is a BEAST at least an A...
im a E55 AMG guy love the M113K motors
M157 must be in A
Happy M156 engine owner, for 13 years this engine never let me down. Raw power and incredible sound!
Did you have to replace the horrible head bolts?? And im pretty sure it had problems with timing chains. Did u encounters these??
@@khaledjarrah9103 I've got one too, but mine is a later one (2012) with the upgraded head bolts from factory. i have had issues with the timing chain. the timing jumped at 42k miles, and a valve hit a piston. car has full service history, cost £9k to fix at MB main dealer. car is now on 46k miles.
Recently ive noticed a knocking noise when sat at idle in gear, it can also be felt through the brake pedal. im just praying its not something serious again.
@@khaledjarrah9103 The problem is is that imo the original headbolts weren’t 100% a design flaw. Owners just didn’t keep up short oil change intervals. Short trips leads to water in the oil. Oil becomes acidic and corrodes the bolts = problems.
I’ve never had a problem with the timing chain on my M156 nor have I heard anything about it.
@@tomredman Ah that sucks man. Very rare to hear chain issues. Knocking noise coming from top end or under the car?
@@hoveylu7231 sounds like it's coming from Under the car
M156 is the true successor to the m119, true race bred engine, dohc, light weight materials, naturally aspirated, such great engines.
Thank you for your great videos. I fully agree with your ranking. Would not have done better.
Ta chaîne aussi est incroyable 🙏🏻
I think the M113 should be higher..what it may lack in power , it makes up for in bullet proof reliability , ease of service and much better fuel economy.
It literally has no major problems ,,unlike the M156 for example.
He dropped it to a lower tier for its sound?! Lol this freakin engine is what STARTED the whole “burble tune” epidemic that has taken over the car scene bruh… 🤦🏻♂️
Great job and I agree that it’s as much about the ‘experience’ of driving with these engines. I love my M113/C55. Thanks
I love the m157
M157 doesn't deserve to be B tier. Very underrated engine.
Fair. A tier then?
The M157 is nearly as powerful as the M275
For example in the S class w221
The V12 m275:
630 Hp/ 1000 Nm
The V8 m157:
571 Hp/900 Nm
Wich is nearly the same...
Not a reliable engine by any means
@@freakyaright15 The 157/278 needs every plastic peice in that cooling system upgraded with metal and then it'll be a better engine. People make shit loads of power with them, the cooling system is really the downfall. I believe there's plenty of aftermarket support for them. But the non amg version is weaker
@@AMGmeister I would have said A tier, but appreciate this is your list!! For me, the M157 is also one of the classiest sounding AMG engines too.
OM612 is great engine, shame that amg wouldn’t tune OM629, that would be something. M113k, M155, M156, M159, M275 those are mine heroes.
Om606 is million times better all tho it isnt amg
648 too
M157 maybe should be in A section💪🏾
I have 09 sl63 m156, the 04 sl55 m113k, my wife’s car, we swap. If I need to go on the highway it’s the 55, if I. Want to drive for fun and visceral experience, it’s the sl63 m156, the tranny makes the sl63 stand out. At the gas station, 3 of 10 ask questions with the sl55, 6 out of 10 ask about the sl63. The 63 sounds like nothing else. If you had both, you would probably feel the same, I won’t sell either. Both cars are equal in speed, and the mechanical issues of the m156, are just on the Internet, I have never had any problems with either cars motors. I had the sl600, it was fast but didn’t feel like an AMG, the 63 m156, is the last motor of its kind, the rpms go from 2k to 7k in a second. I have 94,000 miles on the m156, nothing broken except parts attached, motor never opened, but the motor snaps back when you downshift, it’s a gun going off, only the Z06 slowly passes me by, not the 911, expect Turbo. But the quality is so strong on the sL R230.
Reliable M113, influential M113k, and widely used M156 all feel underrated in this list. Would love another video like this that goes more in depth on each engine and grades on a set of criteria (ex. popularity, reliability, application).
Great video!, I agree with most of his opinions on these motors with the exception of putting the M156 in the same tier with 4 other motors that are practically bulletproof and and share massively impressive attributes. I give serious kudos to AMG for what they accomplished going fully independent and incorporating racing technology in the creation of the M156; not to mention that it sounds AMAZING more so than the other motors in that tier. However, with cooling, headbolt, and cam adjuster issues, causing, in some cases, catastrophic failures, I don't feel that it deserves A tier status. B tier appears to be more like its rightful place. Just my 2 cents✌🏽
M113k of course.
Glad you understand this well! we want sound, volume and power! otherwise we can just buy a Toyota. I hope AMG wakes up and keeps making the brutal V8's and V12's !
M113K FTW
The M113 naturally aspirated engine is basically bulletproof more reliable than the M113Kompressor model but you rate the M113 lower? Sure dude sure
Everything spot on but I think m157 deserves more credit
Considering the improvements that were later made on the M156, I would recommend it be placed at S-level. This is the engine that took AMG away from petrol head anoraks into popular consciousness. Its the engine most people know AMG for. It also delivered stonking performance worthy of its rivals. Other than this, I agree with the list.
Agree a 100%
Disagree. Even with updated headbolts, there are still the issues of camshaft, lift and cam adjuster locking plate wear as well as intake manifold corrosion that keeps the most special AMG engine imo from being in S tier. A+ tier definitely.
You need to own one to really know the pros and cons (I do).
Go watch Tasos Machatos, heaps of AMG engine content to keep you informed and interested.
I Totally agree.
Bro intake manifold pipe made with such material doesnt resist high temperatures so its doomed to fail apparently
This list will be my AMG Bible
His channel is the AMG bible
OM612 maybe wasn't as AMG planned but, sure it's impressive.
I wish I had a w203 T model with the 612
As far as diesels goes the om629 takes the cake. More torque than an Aventador back in 2006.
@@jSUIIII ever heard of the om606 superturbo? thats another type of monster
Maybe its the era i grew up in but i think the M156 is one of the best V8’s ever made. Best sound, smooth but strong power delivery. Perfect NA V8. S tier imo
The M133 is a turbocharged inline-four engine produced by Mercedes-Benz. Since its debut in 2013, it has been awarded International Engine of the Year three times in the "Best New Engine" and "1.8-litre to 2-litre" categories. D Tier... ok, I had a 2017 A45 for 5 years and that had a crazy good sounding exhaust, it was much louder than the previous iteration.
Hardcore AMG fans don't like 4cyls. The M133 even today is pretty cutting edge, but it is supercedes by the even better M139.
Even AMG built 2.0L turbos are best of their kind.
M157 is a most underrated engine in history of AMG.
I think because it has same architecture as M278 and early built m278 had some problems. But M157 is not the same as M278. This engine specialty after 2012- good and reliable. I would put it on A
Very good overview. I think this list and ranking is pretty much spot on, with maybe the exception of the M133. Yes it is a 4-banger, but it's output for a 2.0 was among the best across any manufacturer, and I think it's easily the best sounding inline 4-cylinder engine, even more so than the M139. C tier seems more approriate.
complètement d'accord !!!
Yes, I agree. The use of a 4-cylinder by AMG was looked down upon, but people forget that the CLA is a very small car and is on the lower end of the Mercedes lineup. Even with the 4 banger in there, it's a tight fit inside the engine bay, so it would be impossible to fit an 8 or even 6-cylinder in there. Putting that engine in a 63 AMG isn't acceptable, but in a 45, it's perfect. As for power, sub 400hp from a factory turbo 4-cylinder is pretty good. It also sounds better than most other 4 cylinders.
So much of an AMG's character is defined by its emgine - thanks for this videp... An excellent reference work!!
Will be great to see same engines ranked, with only criteria being reliability!
Guess m275 will not be S tier...
Thank you for your videos.
you'd be surprised. There's a 300k+ original mile m275 still on the road... don't ask me how I know ;) Fluid maintenance is key
I have an M275 with 180000km on it - its a very reliable car i just have an oil leak i need to fix on it now but otherwise its been fantastic.
@@thatmatty231guy It's barely broken in then haha. The one I'm speaking about literally has 550,000km and it runs like a top
@@poisonouspython1410 Wow 550k? Holy shit thats nuts haha. Yea mines brand new then lol. But yea they're truly fundamentally solid - and they're still pretty basic just a massive SOHC 3 valve V12 with a couple turbos bolted on.
@@thatmatty231guy Yes, you've got a long while left on the clock with your engine haha. I'm a car longevity snob with vehicles so both of mine have over 550,000km but you would never know it from the way they look or drive. And yes, the lack of variable valve timing is important, but most important to me when selecting an engine platform to hypermile is PORT INJECTION. I literally have original injectors in both my engines with over half a million km and the valves are clean as a whistle.
He’s done it again, always love to see your new releases. Thanks for the school on all AMG engines. You did not mentioned the Ls1 and Ls2 AMG variant.
M157 goes in A
As always, a great video. I was hopeful in seeing the M279 6.0L Biturbo V12. The successor to the M275. But regardless it was a good video, this kind of video is something many other's including myself had been looking out for as AMG Enthusiasts. I knew of all people in the world that you would be the one to make it 👍👍👍.
I've had all the A tier engines apart from the 178 - and my favourite would have to be the 113k and just behind it the 275. The 156 is lovely sounding but not as thrilling as the 113k's torque. I think the 157 is probably fair enough in B tier - its still a monster motor but its a lot more 'electrically limited' feeling - in saying that though, the 177 feels that way too! Even with ESP off my C63s used to feel still somewhat delinked from the accellerator pedal.
It’s transmission torque limits and bov vales. I got an ecu tune, down pipes & tcu tunes plus bov vales from zac and carbon intake. The engine really comes alive! Throttle response so much better. I know what you’re saying by the m177 feeling electronically limited, that’s because it is. The ecu and tcu tune really fixes that feeling
Dark Soul ranking system. Thumbs up
I think the reliability issues of M156 are overstated, yes they can be costly but they are known. Catastrophic failures are rare, even the head bolts issue, and plenty of cars are pushing 200k miles without any head work.
I respect the M113k, but I don’t think the reliability and ability to mod is what makes an AMG engine special. The same can be said for a lot of Japanese and American engines. The M156 is the pinnacle of what it means to be an AMG engine: superb German engineering and a sublime sound.
Great job with this list. I absolutely love my M156. It kicks ass!😂
I'm glad you put the M159 in the S-tier!
M139 definitely needs to be A tier IMO, it’s literally one of the best highest output production 4 bangers in the world and it’s C tier? C’mon! So much tech and engineering going into it to reliability produce 421 hp in the S variant. I know it’s no v8 but what other 4 banger sounds better? The twin scroll attached to it makes it really responsive, super impressive.
I didn't realise AMG had so many engines! Thanks for this video!
The na 156 6.2L was not good. The 5.5L 157 TT that replaced it was a masterpiece. The 4.0L TT 177 not so much. The 5.4 m113 and 113k were also masterpieces, best after their first few years of production. 2012-13 157 had more issues in its first few yrs as did the 113k. The 113k should be in S tier. Outside of its weak cooling and weak transmission which can’t handle anything above 750 lb-ft tq at crank/660 tq at wheels safely, is a let down without a built trans. And the ABC suspension system which is well over $7000 to fix. The coil over swap makes these cars handle badly and to the point of being dangerous in higher speed corners.
The M133 (2.0 I4 T) and the M177 (4.0 V8 TT) are actually close relatives from a technical standpoint. As the per liter output of the 4 cylinder M133 is higher you can estimate what potential the V8 version has, even with emissions accessories (keeping in mind increased thermal losses in larger engines).
The next possible step for AMG would be to make a replacement for the M177 / M178 based on the new M139 2.0 I4 T engine. But sadly as internal combustion engine development is coming to a halt in Germany we might never see such replacement. Instead the M139 - possibly the large scale last internal combustion engine of AMG - will creep upwards through the Mercedes lineup (new C63 hybrid).
The old AMG engines are the beast
I don't care if this video is not scientific at all, I had a good time watching it. thanks
The stance of that black E55 is PERFECT 👍 😘
I have an M112K and it's very reliable. Really good V6 that you can mod easily to get up to 400hp and feel no negative effects.
M104 needs to be atleast B tier. People a making over 1000hp with it. On stock internals it's good for up to 400hp. The M119 very underrated solid A tier, The Kangaroos Team made 717hp and 771nm on stock internals with twin turbo setup.
PS: Like many said M113K is S tier, with some tuning (stock internals) it gets 750-800hp so quite well built.
I wish AMG did OM606 turbo as their diesel option. It makes crazy hp (over 600hp) only with a big turbo and more fuel. That's the diesel 2JZ lol
My first MB was a C43 AMG estate with M113 100% reliability over the 12 years and 70,000 miles. Sounds great and v fast. Last Year I sold it and bought a C63s Estate with M177 which is another story...+200 more horses and monsterously quick
M157 should be A tier of course
I prefer M177 it's really reliable engine.
It’s a tank, you can push 1,000 hp with stock internals no problem
Bulletproof, hence why they put it in the G63 amg 2019
m156 is definitely S category as it produces the best exhaust note in the world
M112K is the best-sounding V6 for any production car IMO.
Top two AMG of all time for sound;
1. 5.4L V8 supercharged as per SL55.
2. 5.5L V8 turbocharged as per E63.
In that order.
M119 Should be in S tier as it was featured in the Sauber c8/c9/c11/CLK GTR , and if you could afford it the CLK GTR was a road legal race homologated car. Lets not even talk about how it was capable of 720hp in twin turbo charged race trim for the C9 (back in 1989).
M178 in the GTR it’s epic 👍🔥 all lovely engines though.
This whole tier list favors V8’s ☹️
The M139 needs justice for being a closed deck engine the highest HP i4 engine. Tuning capabilities are mind blowing too
Mercedes makes the best Engines
BMW makes really good transmission
Audi has really cool headlight technology
haha that comment made my day, but I must give audi credit for the inline 5pot and the v6 supercharged engine. Both great engines with a lot of tuning potentional.
You got that list all wrong. Bmw don't make transmissions.
Mercedes - best autos
Bmw - reliable engines
Audi - money black hole

The m113 deserves some respect it’s the NA equivalent to the m113k should be in same tier, m133 D tier that’s wrong 😑
M156 - bolts, horrific finish of cam shafts. Why is is ok?
Cuz it just takes Torque and Horsepower for breakfast
You know the head bolts and cams are a simple fix that Indy mechanic shop can do. Either is the death of the engine. A shop will do the head bolts and cam lobes for $1500 to $2500. I own 3 m156 and head bolts and lobes are fine on all 3. Not every m156 has those issues.
@@talkditingsdem5799 unless you have some ~100kmiles on it, or age.. than - you need help. How can you torque bolts to same specs if the head gasket is already squeezed. What torque should you use to replace each bolt with the old gasket? The torque is not about this engine, m113k was much more.
Speaking from M177 owner, M133 should be at least C Tier along with M139, if not higher (for both) due to V8 "favoritism", also I think M178 particularly the LS2 on AMG GT Black Series & Aston Martin Valhalla definitely deserves the S Tier, great list though, thank you for putting them together.
I think the M139 should be B tier and M178 should be S tier, just for the simple fact it has a flat plane crank in the Black Series. The M113K could also be argued up a spot in my opinion.
For me, reliability and overall stoutness has been the deciding factor
Yep. M156 might make good noises, but if someone asked me, “what’s the best Mercedes-Benz gas motor?” I would say M113 NA for its efficiency, broad power band, and reliability.
@@curtislovrak5390 100% agree, exactly what I was thinking
M275 deserved S imo. So much went into that engine
Anyone that thinks the O-Ring on the oil pump in the M113k is the problem. Really it's due to colder climates. The O-Ring goes through very drastic heat cycles and basically kills it very quickly. So if you live where it gets below freezing for many months in a row, I would worry.
M256, you should do more research. this is the first mass produced engine with the built in 48V Alternator/generator. It has no auxiliary belts as well. I would say it is revolutionary in an ever so dull engine world.
Your a true amg fan. Love the videos
I didn't know that AMG made a diesel engine. The M119 engine is definitely my favorite because of the sound and the sheer reliability.
The M113K is bomb proof. As someone who crashed their Mercedes I can say that the engine is indestructible.
unless your a mercedes technician who has been working on these engines the last 20 odd years and seen all the ins and outs this tier list is pointless. some engines you rated high are a rather poor engine and engines you rated low the quality is much greater then those you rated high. the early M156 were absolute garbage we saw so many problems with it the M113 and M113k was the greatest engine by far later V12’s once they fixed the issues with the ignition packs were prety solid aswell older v12’s definitely not a higher tier.
I wish you would have given the M113 a little more credit. Yes the M113”K” has a little more power, thanks to the Kompressor…
My ML55 still rocks and she has 160.000 miles, not kilometers. She was hand built and doesn’t carry a tag with some guys name on it.
Let me know , I really love your videos.
M133 is definitely an A tier. I’ve got it with factory optional AMG performance exhaust upgrade in ‘15 GLA45 and it sounds glorious. And it’s a solid engine.
Coming from a E55 lover M113k instant S
M112K should stick in the A tier, as it was every bit as powerful as the bigger v8 M113 n/a, but you could wedge it into an SLK lol, legendary.
The M177 sounds surprisingly good, but it won’t ever be the M113.
I love my m157 in my g63 amg. But, I have to say seals and plastics are all complete crap. At 50k I'm doing oil pan, valve cover gaskets and even turbo seals.
Beautiful sounding engine. Unique torque figures. Just really crappy German plastics.
I've had to replace both of the fabric tape ram air ducts, as they fell apart on my W212 E63S, but no leaks on mine. Sounds fab, drives beautifully, goes like stink when required, an indicated 31mpg on my last 300 mile trip. Should be a tier above.
Thank you so much for this simple video 4 my favorite manufacturer's performance division 👍👍👍
the m256 is an underrated engine
M119 at B? Crazy in 1990 it had 400HP and over 420 lb feet of torque that was more power than some super cars way underrated
Great information as always, if possible, I would consider the M119 short/ and closed deck as fitted to the W124 should be in the B grade. AMG did a lot of work to make this engine possible and the high valve of the E60 cars means this should at least be a B plus. It’s also worth noting these particular Engine are extremely reliable, with zero common faults. Don’t forget, this engine was responsible for the 1989 Sauber Mercedes Win at LevMans
This video aged well. Discovering how much of an A Tier status the M275 engine truly is. Producing 604hp and 738/lbs-ft of TQ, it's capable of 25mpg in the aerodynamic R230 SL65 Roadster on cruise control [which was a deep whole car efficiency program rather than just a throttle controller]. Only one other V12 was awarded Performance Engine of the Year ever -the Ferrari 812's N/A V12.
Awesome video bro!!
The M152 engine really deserves to be on the B tier. Although not the most powerful, the engine was available until 2016, making it the ACTUAL last naturally aspirated V8 engine from AMG.
I think the reason why the M152 is in C tier is because there is are barely any engines out in the wild because it was only offered in the SLK55. So we can’t really comment on the engine in terms of reliability and tune ability etc.
Do you own one Keith?
@@hoveylu7231 Thinking if I should get a M157/M152 before a M177. Already own a M156 and M113k
