All I can say is Bill Walton is really a great person and I'm going to miss him what a great wonderful human being
Watching Walton play in his prime was one of the most sublime experiences of my life! If he stayed healthy, he wins 4-5 more titles!
He was the most fundamentally sound athlete I've ever seen!
Yes, I'm old enough to totally agree.
@@waltercoffey5939 me, too. I watched a few of his UCLA games on TV in the early 70s'. Great, great player.
Bill Walton One of my favorite men & basketball players Love the man
Listening to Bill Walton talk is ALWAYS a pleasure.
Conceited
@@kevinwatkins6615 Bill Walton?
Yep. Still Bill
@@kevinwatkins6615 I don't think Walton acts conceited at all.
I only love Hubbie Brown he is better than PC. Dude is archive library history
God bless Bill Walton!
When healthy Bill Walton was an absolutely fantastic player
Walton clearly one of the three greatest college b ball plates only Russ and Oscar in the equation not even kareem
So was Maurice Stokes
@@kevinwatkins6615 You are absolutely correct. Maurice Stokes was such a great player. It was such a tragedy when he got hurt and became handicapped. His friendship with Jack Twyman is such an amazing story.
@@johnwhite2576 Kareem was better than Walton in college. Not by a lot, but he was better. Also, you left out Maravich and Bird.
@@johnwhite2576 Sorry, but no one will ever top Pistol Pete Maravich!👍 He was the best college player ever- a magician with the ball in his hands!
In his prime, before he was injured Walton was the greatest basketball player I ever saw! His hitting 21 out of
22 shots in the NCAA finals was the greatest collage game ever played. He was like Jokic with better defense.
He was as tough as they come. He backed down to no one.
I saw a 6 foot 4 man block his shot
@@kevinwatkins6615 It is true David Thompson was incredible. I saw it to. So What? It's
basketball, things happen. Thompson could jump to the moon and back.
College (collage is also a word).
@@kevinwatkins6615yap, David Thompson could leap vertically to touch the top of the basketball board
Better on offense too. He could rebound and make an outlet pass in one motion. Also more pleasing to watch.
One of the most profoundly true comments I have ever heard was made by Bill Walton as he called an NBA playoff game for the television audience. From the court: one player made a pass wide of the target; another player made a great effort, diving for the ball and throwing it back inbounds. Bill's co-announcer proclaimed "...what hustle! what a great play..." Adroitly, Bill said (this is a paraphrase) "Don't mistake effort for achievement. If he was where he was supposed to be all that wouldn't have been necessary...." You get the point. Bill Walton had a great mind. Respectfully, Rest in Peace, Bill..
Wooden knew that he was a great teacher. He commented once that there were many coaches that knew as much as him about basketball but he taught it better. He spent hours planning each training session. I still can't imagine spending that much time on planning a practice but he could.
“ Why go low when you can go high” Bill Walton!! Very said Bill died but so much physical pain. He was unique and a hippie’s voice!
Bill Walton was an incredible basketball player, as technically sound as the best big men ever. And then he blossomed as a TV personality -- for he said what he thought at all times. My favorite moment came in the Pac10 broadcasts, when he proudly repeatedly reminded us of "The Conference of Champions !". I shall miss him ...
I think the demise of his beloved Pac-12 is what did him in.
It’s crazy the turn of events this was a week ago and next week he’s dead. RIP BILL
ya its scary how quickly things can change in life,,,
What an intelligent, story teller Big Bill was. He will truly be missed. RIP BIG GUY!! 😢
Way to go Bill! Wonderful comments on Coach John Wooden
Great information and interview. Thank you
My two favorite Wooden maxims: "Be quick, but don't hurry;" "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail." I love that he believed that while his teams might not always win, they always were the best prepared...
Also, Wooden was a heck of a pro player in his day. He often played for the Indianapolis Kautskys, who could easily sell 7,000 seats at the downtown armory during the Depression.
Rip bill
Rip bill
Way back in High School, I checked out a Bill Walton Big Man VHS tape from the library and perfected my sky hook. It was unstoppable.
Saw Bill "walking" thru The St Louis Airport in the early '90s. He literally "hobbled", but he still had a tremendous presence!
I am in awe of him and Coach.
Great video!
I was at a Blazer game years ago, Bill was signing a few autographs for the fans, as he walked away I called out to him for signature he returned to sign for me and he was a little annoyed but he still came back to sign. I, stupidly, was a little put off by this,..... I had no idea he had this much pain constantly running through his body,... I am sorry for your pain,.. I should have known better,... RIP
Not a lot of people know the early story of John Wooden as a player. Great video!
i only knew that because friend who i played h.s. ball with his grandfather was his teammate at purdue photo in house mid 30s
Rest in peace, Bill Walton. A beautiful human and an entirely unique and sublime basketball artist.
Great human being!!
To bad injuries stopped his career. The short period Walton was healthy the trailblazers won the the championship and the next season they got off to a fantastic start then he got hurt again.
If Bill Russell had lived
One of the best white centers
Purdue grad here. Long time ago. Not in Wooden's time but in Lew and Bill's time. Great story about Wooden. 1970 UCLA v Jacksonville (the first twin towers - Gilmore and Burrows). Gilmore dunks on Wicks twice. Wooden walks over, takes him out and says to him "Sydney, it doesn't seem like you want to play today. You let me know when you change your mind."
Wicks sat for a few minutes, came back in and the rest as they say is history.
ST,Bona wins it all if Bob Big cat Lanier didn't blow his knee against Villanova, game before sad
Ah. Bullshit. No dunking during that time
@@Torre71 IF .... IF ..... IF... If your aunt had testicles and a penis, she would be your uncle
@@Torre71 St Bonaventure was the #1 team - until Big Bob went down against the Villanova Team with Howard Porter. Wicks would have been a lunch meal for Lanier. Gilmore was too inexpierence at that point in his career
my hs teammate best friend his granddad was the big lefty with the hookshot played witj john photo in house but cant think of his moms maiden name my late dsd was friends with purdue football coach 60s 70s csnt recall name as kids we went to his cottage the boilermaker at va.beach but also cant recall name he was famous in lore purdue
Walton was my little brother's favorite player and later on mine to RIP Bill also RIP my little brother rick😢
Coach Wooden - The Wizard of Westwood.
RIP. The greatest. He will always be remembered
One of those crazy talents like Sandy Koufax who were taken away from us by injury way too early. Who knows what else they might have accomplished.

My favorite player ever. Going to miss you Man. The world is less with you not in it.
Jamaal Wilkes wrote in his autobiography that the greatest passer was John Wooden, because when Coach Wooden would pass him the ball during shooting drills, it felt different and almost magical.
He was the best player of all time. Unfortunately it was for only a season and a half 😂
beautifully said, jadmac. thank you.
While Kareem could be moody, Bill Walton, Bill Russell and Wilt shared an incredible intellect and great minds that make them captivating to listen to. Bill Walton did suffer for much of his life, it is good he is out of pain, but we are diminished not to have him here any longer.
And with all of that, two Rings. Great!
My head just exploded when Bill said John Wooden never made more than 32,500 dollars in a year at UCLA.Athletes make way more than that for one game😮
Even back then, it was a paltry salary. After he retired, UCLA continued to pay him the same salary with COL increases for the rest of his life, and when he was too old to take care of himself hired a trainer to live with him so he never had to leave his Encino condo. He made more money from his camps and books.
BS BS BS. Sam Gilbert
Some of that was a generational thing of the WW 2 generation. Former football coach of ohio state woody hayes, was the same way when it came to salary, his last yr coaching in 1978 he made 43,000 a yr. They literally had to beg him to take more money. He was philosophical much like wooden, the only difference hayes was a hothead. There was a reason they were called the greatest generation.

More $ in one quarter.
In 1972, I was at UCLA and we occupied the administration building in protest against the Vietnam War and Bill Walton was there.
Would you describe your protests as peaceful compared to what we watched on recent campus protests ?
Wilt.
"And I love being alive", said Bill Walton.
May Allah Bless Bless Both of There Souls! 👏🏾💯
Hi--When was this interview. Looks to be within the past 4 months--thank you
Lay it down, big man.
"Stoicism is not my deal. That's Kareem's deal." 😂
Probably, the first great modern-style player was Bob Pettit. His game held up into the 1960s. Then Bill Russell. Then Elgin Baylor. Then Wilt Chamberlain. Then Oscar Robertson and Jerry West. Then many. George Mikan's career came too early. He was any era guy, though.
George Mikan?
Man this was in my recommended videos the DAY before he died. Just weird.
Bill always walked and ran a bit strangely from the 1st time I ever saw him play at ucla
Wooden also turned a blind eye when his assistants cheated the system to recruit players. Nobody is perfect.
You are tring to tell all the other schools where not doing the same thing or even more
Do not kid yourself it has been going on since the 1940s.
Bobby Knight didn't like John Wooden. Maybe jealous. Nobody will ever do what John did.
Under rated as a person, overrated as a basketball player. I love the guy, but you just can't say "injuries" because they are part of the game. Kind of like saying "great but couldn't shoot". Or "great but could get down the court" It's all part of the game, part of the sum of the player, and part of life.
By your measure then, Kareem is the goat.
You miss the point. It wasn't simply injuries, his feet were genetically messed up.
@@MichaelGibbons-uk2mc
You miss the point. His career was not even the caliber of an HOF.
If your or mine genetics would have been different, we would both be in Springfield, but we're not. It is what it is, and also what it isn't.
Too bad teriperitide hasn’t been invented in his prime. Could have regrown new bone all over his body.
Can I check your height, jerry at soldier field, didn't mean to bother you just before you went onstage, grab weirs hand, also hope S.D. is cleaned up now.
UCLA are cheap skates for paying so little
Protein is Good for the Body . Did Bill eat enough Protein throughout his youth ???????
Do Magic Mushrooms 🍄 count? He was a Dead Head. Lol!
@@joehawk9839 a dead head with weal Bones. Red Meat and some Carbs would have Helped - But he was a GREAT GREAT PLAYER
The GOAT is and always will be John Stockton.
Thanks for making me laugh😅
John or magic how could you lose
He definitely is the greatest point guard of all time. But he is no Michael Jordan or LeBron James. I would certainly take him over Magic Johnson as I do think Magic Johnson is overrated. I think Clyde Drexler and Larry Bird are both underrated.
@@thepianist7084 your funny! Pick any category? Let's start with championships - Magic 4 Stockton 0! Stockton leads in assists - Magic in points and rebounds. Only a true homer is so unrealistic!
Larry Bird. I rest my case
