Lovely American version of Child ballad Twa Sisters. I haven’t heard an American version before. Must be Appalachian as they made versions of Child ballads frequently.
The Two Sister's Lyrics- There was an old woman left on the sea shore bow and balance to me there was an old woman left on the sea shore her number of daughters 1234 and I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me There was a young man come courting them bow and balance to me there was a young man come courting them the oldest one got struck on him and I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me he bought the youngest a beaver hat bow and balance to me he bought the youngest a beaver hat the oldest one got mad at that and I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me Sister, oh sister, lets walk the sea shore bow and balance to me sister, oh sister, lets walk the sea shore see the ships as they sail ore and ill be true to my love if my love will be true to me while those two sisters was walking the shore bow and balance to me while those two sisters was walking the shore the eldest pushed the youngest over I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me Sister, oh sister, please lend me your hand bow and balance to me sister oh sister please lend me your hand and you may have Willy and all his land and I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me I never, I never will lend you my hand bow and balance to me I never I never will lend you my hand but I'll have Willy and all his land and I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me Sometimes she sank and sometimes she swam bow and balance to me sometimes she sank and sometimes she swam until she came to the old mill dam I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me The miller he got his fishing hook bow and balance to me the miller he got his fishing hook he fished that maiden out of the brook and I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me Oh miller oh miller here's five gold rings bow and balance miller oh miller here's five gold rings to push my sister in again I'll be true to my love, if my love will be true to me The miller received those five gold rings bow and balance to me The miller received those five gold rings and pushed the maiden in again I'll be true to my love, if my love The sister was hung on the gallows high bow and balance to me the sister was hung on the gallows high the miller was burned on the stake nearby I'll be true to my love, if my love will be true to me ~~~~~~~~
Morgan. Her versions of the old ballads that tell a story like this one are my favorites. This song is on the 1958 Kapp album "Folk-Song Saturday Night" which includes songs by Seeger, Alan Lomax, Guy Carawan, and John Cole. The audio is from that vinyl album. She sings six songs - one is "The Two Sisters." I'm thinking of making a Seeger compilation video that includes these songs and others from similar albums that include songs by her and other singers. I did a full album video of her 1962 album "A Song For You And Me" and should soon post full album videos of her two early 1960s albums "The Three Sisters" and "The Best of Peggy Seeger." Take care.
Both this version and the Waits version leave out the part where the sister's body floats ashore, her flesh rots away and her bones are turned into a fiddle that sings of her fate, leading to the cruel sister's suicide / arrest and subsequent execution.
@@edible0pig Well the Waits one makes it sound like the miller got the blame and doesn't mention a suicide at all. I think I prefer the song without the supernatural element you mentioned.
@@edible0pigthat ending is in a song about the same story called “The Wicked Sister” by the Irish singer Meav, who was formerly in the band Celtic Woman.
No words are good enough to express my appreciation for this precious piece of humanity.
Thank god for Alan Lomax!
"The sister was hung on the gallows high
The miller was burned at the stake nearby"
That had no right to rhyme so damned well.
I love it!
Poor miller always did get the short end of the stick.
Wonderful! I love the Pentangle version of this song; this is my first time hearing Seeger's. Absolutely beautiful.

It's pretty standard in Appalachian folk music, although more often in that context I see it as "The Wind and Rain"
As a folksinger i am happy tesrs in my eyes that atill lives in the hearts of men.
The Two Sister's Lyrics-
There was an old woman left on the sea shore
bow and balance to me
there was an old woman left on the sea shore
her number of daughters 1234
and I'll be true to my love
if my love will be true to me
There was a young man come courting them
bow and balance to me
there was a young man come courting them
the oldest one got struck on him
and I'll be true to my love
if my love will be true to me
he bought the youngest a beaver hat
bow and balance to me
he bought the youngest a beaver hat
the oldest one got mad at that
and I'll be true to my love
if my love will be true to me
Sister, oh sister, lets walk the sea shore
bow and balance to me
sister, oh sister, lets walk the sea shore
see the ships as they sail ore
and ill be true to my love if my love will be true to me
while those two sisters was walking the shore
bow and balance to me
while those two sisters was walking the shore
the eldest pushed the youngest over
I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me
Sister, oh sister, please lend me your hand
bow and balance to me
sister oh sister please lend me your hand
and you may have Willy and all his land
and I'll be true to my love
if my love will be true to me
I never, I never will lend you my hand
bow and balance to me
I never I never will lend you my hand
but I'll have Willy and all his land
and I'll be true to my love if my love will be true to me
Sometimes she sank and sometimes she swam
bow and balance to me
sometimes she sank and sometimes she swam
until she came to the old mill dam
I'll be true to my love
if my love will be true to me
The miller he got his fishing hook
bow and balance to me
the miller he got his fishing hook
he fished that maiden out of the brook
and I'll be true to my love
if my love will be true to me
Oh miller oh miller here's five gold rings
bow and balance
miller oh miller here's five gold rings
to push my sister in again
I'll be true to my love, if my love will be true to me
The miller received those five gold rings
bow and balance to me
The miller received those five gold rings
and pushed the maiden in again
I'll be true to my love, if my love
The sister was hung on the gallows high
bow and balance to me
the sister was hung on the gallows high
the miller was burned on the stake nearby
I'll be true to my love, if my love will be true to me ~~~~~~~~
I've been trying to learn the Banjo. Does anyone have any idea what roll she's doing? It sounds like she strums for the chorus, but I can't tell.
Where did this audio come from? This is one of my favorites

I'm partial to the Tom Waits version but this is good as well.

I'm with ya, pal. Tom puts the grit in a gritty story.
