Feinberg drew a distinction between formal mastery and unconscious musical impulse. His revered teacher Goldenweiser stressed the former; another great Russian teacher -of Gilels and Richter - Harry Neuhaus the latter. (The third member of that teaching triumvirate, Igumnov, was poetic beyond belief.) Feinberg said he learned enormously from Goldenweiser but temperamentally was drawn more to Neuhaus. I hear this in his Schumann. Expression of ideas outstrips discipline. One suspects it did for Robert (not Clara) Schumann too. Feinberg was a towering, unique pianist, and I believe a much underrated composer. Thanks for sharing.
An unique performance! He is playing ideas, not notes. So rare, unfortunately, especially with this work. Thank you so much for making Feinberg's interpretation available. I wish every young pianist heard this.
Perhaps a pianist should be a good composer him(her)self to understand Schumann so profoundly. I would put this masterpiece of piano playing on the same level as Rachmaninoff's "Carnival" and Kempff's "Phantasy".
I really like Schumann, When i listen to each of his piece, his inner world is permeated into the piece. Although unfortunate, he is an excellent composer.
Marvelous! Absolutely the best interpretation of this piece. Feinberg is not only an extraordinary virtuoso. He is a poet, a genius!
And an inexplicably overlooked composer.

What an extraordinary musician and pianist.
This performance rivals that of Richter as the best. Amazing voicing. So clean yet so emotionally rich.
