Hi there, thanks for your comment. As we enter a space, the space enters us, and the experience is essentially an exchange and fusion of the object and the subject. Robert Pogue Harrison, an American literary scholar, states poetically:In the fusion of place and soul, the soul is as much of a container of place as place is a container of soul, both are susceptible to the same forces of destruction. Atmosphere is similarly an exchange between material or existent properties of the place and the immaterial realm of human perception and imagination. Yet, they are not physical ‘things’ or facts, as they are human experiential ‘creations’. - Extract from SPACE, PLACE AND ATMOSPHERE. EMOTION AND PERIPHERAL PERCEPTION IN ARCHITECTURAL EXPERIENCE, Pallasma
Subtle variation in light, air and atmosphere makes us aware of that total embodied human experience in a space. Light has that ability to touch or move us, create a space of silence, sorrow or happiness. As one enters a space, one can sense emotional qualities of that space- whether it is sad, happy, joyous etc. Light in Architecture has that unique ability to induce moods in a space where one can have varied experiences from it. It has a physical presence and an incredible power to evoke the human experience where human body becomes that space. It just revolves around that light. It has that power to make a space within us and have a dialogue with oneself. Few architectural marvels show that space-light dialogue where embodied space is a sacred human experience. What Kahn talks about- “From light to silence, and silence to light” Places of worship has that quality where human experience is heightened.
Light is an element and space is an enclosure. They complement and converse with each other. Without the presence of either, the other one is not discovered or experienced. In south Indian temples, experiencing light is stretched through sequencing of spaces, variation in quality of light and enclosures. Light and space complement each other to create that enclosure and sequence of movement. Whereas for example in churches, the encounter and experience with light is direct. We need to direct, reflect, refract, float the right amount of light entering through proportioned openings to create that space for human experience.
