It always freaks me out when they just look sideways every so often while in the middle of a cobra fight. Fantastic creatures. Plus, it's absolutely hair raising to think you could be laying there reading the paper or taking a nap while a cobra is crawling around you.
This cobra was actually very wise and clearly very experienced in defending against mongooses. It knew to keep the hind part of its body away from the mongoose so he couldn't get those cheap shots in against him which would have otherwise caused him to eventually become weakened and vulnerable to the point of being killed by the mongoose. @@statinskill cobra had advantage because of that furniture otgerwise mangoose would have killed him.. In open ground cobra knew he cannot do anything so he ran
it's crazy to think that the mongoose doesn't only relying on its reflexes, but the ability to predict and calculate every steps. notice the striking distance, the taunt, hit spot and closed space. it even observes its surrounding first before entering the fight with a plan.
this is also the magician's trick a slide of the eye and the flick of the wrist. Cobras only strike downward, as to some vipers can literally flatten their scales and push themselves up in the air a couple of feet and strike. Like the Malayan pit viper or the fer de lance, while they are from different continents they are nicknamed bouncing betties after the terrible mine from WW11. And Cobras mock strike a lot to gain distance. This was a great video as I love cape cobras for how beautiful they are. And the mongoose are cool they are so fast.
That is a very smart mongoose with a finely developed sense of strategy. It is more efficient to kill snakes when they are out in the open, so it feigned a retreat to get the snake out of the corner so it could more easily be attacked.
If you research mongooses' behaviour thoroughly (literally hundreds of videos available of mongoose attacking cobras) it is never a mongoose's tactic to lure its prey anywhere. Mongooses always use the direct tactic which is rapid attacks and eventual bite to the snake's head. Its mongooses' SOP. And thats what happened in this video and in many of other videos. The Cobra knew it was about to lose so it made a run for it.
As far as snakes go, the cobra has a very slow strike. It’s fairly easy for an animal like a mongoose to avoid taking a bite. Even if it does get bitten it’s immune system counteracts venom.
I found myself pulling for the Mongoose as though it was my favorite football team. It looked like it was going to be a tie game until that Mongoose went batsh*t crazy and dove down into that hole. If I had to hunt for my food like that I would be dead in a week. Next time I think I’m having a tough day I am going to watch this again from my recliner.
The craziest part to me is the animal with only his mouth for protection is damn near the most dangerous animal on the planet. Nature is something else.

Cobra had an advantage with the location set up. With all the furniture around, mongoose didn’t have much space to counteract and breach cobra’s defense. Had it been in the open ground, mongoose could have killed the cobra in no time.
@@CH-zp2rh I was thinking that. It looks like a resort. They probs have a fence somewhere but snakes can probs get in and like the cool flooring next to the chairs. They probs keep that mongoose on the site for that exact reason

Mongooses are immune to snake venom which is why it felt so comfortable going after the cobra. I think the snake connected a couple times also which is why the snake retreated when it realized its venom had no affect on the mongoose.
@@hotice8885 This is the first I've ever heard of them being resistant and not immune. I'm not saying that's not true. I'm just saying that it's not what I was taught. I just looked it up on Google very cursory and saw several posts stating that the mongoose is immune and a few saying that the mongoose is tolerant/resistant. Take that to mean whatever you'd like. I will say that if they are indeed immune as in the way I was taught, I'd say that the mongoose is dodging the snake's strikes because even though the venom would not harm him those are still bites from the snake which still hurt the mongoose. The venom is delivered through holes in the snake's fangs so the snake still has to bite you in order to deliver its venom. The mongoose knows the venom won’t do anything but he still doesn’t want the snake’s teeth sinking down into his flesh.
@Stuart Beatty and since we’re quoting internet articles, this is from the New York Times, “The toxins in many snake venoms, including that of cobras, bind to the acetylcholine receptors of their victims, blocking nerve-muscle communications. Molecular biologist Sara Fuchs and her colleagues found that the acetylcholine receptor in mongooses--like that in the snakes themselves--is slightly mutated so that the venom simply bounces off the muscle cells, causing them no harm.” But why is this a thing? I kept saying things like “if” and “This is the first I have heard of this” and “I’m not saying that is wrong.” You seem to feel attacked. As I said before the mongoose being resistant rather than immune is against what I was taught but if you are right then I am comfortable in my own skin to admit it but I have to know you are right rather than it being conjecture. The way I worded my response would not have bothered me if the roles were reversed because I left room for you to be right but since i didn’t not flat out admit that I was wrong you have a problem. Sir or ma’am, if you are right I will say so…better?
The mongoose is known for its ability to fight and kill venomous snakes, especially cobras. Their specialised acetylcholine receptors render them immune to venom.

it's crazy to think that the mongoose doesn't only relying on its reflexes, but the ability to predict and calculate every steps. notice the striking distance, the taunt, hit spot and closed space. it even observes its surrounding first before entering the fight with a plan.
this is also the magician's trick a slide of the eye and the flick of the wrist.

Also helps the mongoose is immune to venom

It really amazed me how Mongoose dodges those high-speed attacks of a cobra.
Mongooses are natural predators for snakes thats why mongooses have quick reflexes
I was impressed myself it doge 30 to 40 strikes like nothing even was turning his head away like he just knew he was faster
True information about Mongoose: ruclips.net/video/ppdhG0TiLiw/видео.html
As far as snakes go, the cobra has a very slow strike. It’s fairly easy for an animal like a mongoose to avoid taking a bite. Even if it does get bitten it’s immune system counteracts venom.
@@Youre_Right really? thats so cool.

Cobra had an advantage with the location set up. With all the furniture around, mongoose didn’t have much space to counteract and breach cobra’s defense. Had it been in the open ground, mongoose could have killed the cobra in no time.

That mongoose turned around like he nothing to worry about lol 😂
Mongooses are immune to snake venom which is why it felt so comfortable going after the cobra. I think the snake connected a couple times also which is why the snake retreated when it realized its venom had no affect on the mongoose.
Whatsoever
I was just about to raise the question of why the mongoose would bother to dodge the strikes, if it were _completely_ immune. "Resistant" makes sense.
Molecular biologist Sara Fuchs and her colleagues found that the acetylcholine receptor in mongooses--like that in the snakes themselves--is slightly mutated so that the venom simply bounces off the muscle cells, causing them no harm.”
But why is this a thing?
