this is something that bothers me about film criticism nowadays, especially when critics feel the need to tear down a film without much else to say or without also considering how the film may have appealed to it’s target audience. I am so tired of having conversations with film fans who may have a differing opinion to me but rather than choose to discuss it in a fun and constructive way, they immediately decide that they are right and I am wrong. coming into this industry there is so much pressure to feel a certain way about certain films in order to seem knowledgeable but the more I write and the more movies I watch I am no longer so insecure about enjoying something that may not be popular or vice versa, and being able to provide reasons as to why something just didn’t work for me. film criticism needs more honesty, more personality and more constructive subjectivity, I have just had enough of the negativity to tear down certain audiences or for the sake of appeal.
You’re right. The whole point of artistic criticism is to be subjective, not objective. You can (and should) be as fair as you can, and you can (and should) discuss the artistic skill of the creators in a relatively objective manner. But at the end of the day, you’re giving your individual impression of a piece of art, and that is, by its very nature, subjective. (Mad Max 2 should be on your bro list. 😂😂)
