Watched this game in 1979 on Grandstand. Seem to remember the post lunchtime session was not shown live as there was usually racing on so we missed Collis King taking the bowlers apart.
@@rahulranjan7899 I saw the morning session live up til lunch. Missed Collis King take the England bowlers apart. Switched back on when Brearley and Boycott were crawling along and then switched off again when Gooch was out. I am 49. Terrific match yesterday by the way.
I remember this game very well and I've been looking for that catch of Brearley's for ages (one of my favourite catches ever). Thanks so much for uploading.
I should admit that it was Collins King who impressed by scoring 56 brisk runs against Pakistan. Now again he was superb by adding 86 in 66 balls with 3 six and seven fours.
@ David Phillips, he certainly did! Struggled to get in the Test team and eventually went on the rebel tour to South Africa in 1982 which wrecked his international career! Played for Glamorgan and all around the UK as a much loved pro!
one thing I always remember about this game - commentator Richie Benaud saying the WI scorecard had "a funny look about it" after they batted first (their last five players - 5, 0, 0, 0, 0) - but then England batted next (and their last five players - 0, 5, 0, 0, 0). I seem to remember last man Mike Hendrick managing to run to the other end when facing Joel Garner on a hat-trick (?) but that must have been a leg-bye then. I do remember him just scrambling the ball away somehow and scampering up the wicket.
Interesting to watch this - I watched the final that day but as a young lad I didn't perhaps realise to what extent England paid the price of not having a recognised fifth bowler. Relying on the likes of Gooch and Boycott to bowl at Richards was madness. I suppose Brearley was gambling that we might have a bit of luck and get him out early, which didn't happen.
I believe that fast bowler bob willis planned to play but became injured on the day and for some reason no replacement could be found in time or was allowed - I do hear lots say that is a big `what if?' in this game
Remember watching this final - England just didn't have a match winner. Boycott and Brearley like snails but Viv Richards and Collis King were awesome. Best West Indian side ever.
@@ivyphillps7155 We had a chance on a somewhat helpful wicket with a bit of cloud cover but in the end we would have been outclassed in all departments, even if we had played 5 bowlers imo!

The fact that Collis King had been swigging brandy prior to batting made his innings all the more incredible!
