If so, then that would also mean that, if the same situation I mentioned previously were to happen, and the pass is caught PAST the line of scrimmage, instead of behind as in my first question, then offensive linemen can and most likely will be called for ineligible man downfield??? I always wondered why offensive linemen were allowed to freely run downfield on a play that involves a screen pass and never seen a flag being thrown for ineligible receiver downfield, unless the receiver, on the screen play, were to creep to far down the field before being thrown the ball. I’ve been watching college and pro football for a very long time, but there’s all kinds of different rules, with college and pro being vastly different on some rules and the same on others, and it’s hard to keep up with and remember all of them, plus they are constantly changing and/or tweaking different rules every year. @@jongoin4404 IIRC linemen aren't considered eligible by default unless they specifically signal to the refs they want to be eligible for receiving that down, and at the very least that's a rule in the NFL though I'm not sure about college. I know this fairly well because IP made a vid about it due to the Lions being super petty with it one game.

The guy who made the tackle made a great play and really hustled over there. I think he was the return man based on his speed and the lateral angle he had on the ball carrier. You’re probably right that had he cut back upfield he would have scored, but tbf he was going full blast up the sideline which typically *should* be a TD. Great play by the tackler.
I feel like it wasn't too bad because firstly, he's not throwing too far and you can throw a football pretty accurately like ten yards even if you throw it with both hands like a basketball and secondly it's a faster transition from how he was holding it to punt, making the fake less obvious than if he'd gotten the ball up to throw it properly
Two good reasons: 1 He probably faked the actual punt motion to prevent someone catching on too early. Very awkward stance for a conventional pass. 2 Several unblocked big guys in yellow helmets with unfriendly intentions were coming fasts so he had to lob the ball to be sure it would not be blocked.

@@stevevernon1978 yes the nfl doesn’t really distinguish forward passes behind and in front of the line like college does. Also I believe in NFL there is even illegal downfield on a punt, so the central 5 linemen have to stay home before the ball is kicked.
I had to look it up. College rules let the linemen go downfield to block IF the ball is caught at or behind the line of scrimmage. Ball was snapped from the UNLV 39, #5 caught the ball at the 37.

Number 2 on the punting team was tracking the defender. If the defender stayed with the gunner then #2 would have put a body in his way and the play still would have gotten good yardage.

@@thebenc1537 The NFL rule is a little different. If any ineligible receiver is downfield on any forward pass, regardless of whether it is caught beyond the line of scrimmage or not - it's an illegal man down field.

Go watch the highlights from the 2016 ACCCG. James Shibest (now at UNLV) was the ST coordinator for VT in that game and pulled off the same exact fake against Clemson, worked then too!

This isn't a new design, I remember seeing Virginia Tech run this against Clemson in the 2016 ACC Championship game. The gunner who caught the pass was Chicago Bears MLB Tremaine Edmunds

Completed behind the line of scrimmage is legal in college. If the wr catches on the other side of the neutral zone it would be ineligible downfield. Would be a penalty in nfl either way.

About the only thing they did wrong was not getting the touchdown. Six blockers against three defenders should go all the way.
