    - The salon is NALU Hair Salon in Omotesando and yes, they have employees who speak English!
I did Japanese permanent hair straightening, aka thermal reconditioning, in mid-September. How it works is:
Your hair shaft has two types of bonds that contribute to its shape. Hydrogen bonds, and disulphide bonds. Hydrogen bonds change your hair shape temporarily and can be affected by moisture and heat, hence frizzy hair on humid days and curling or straightening with flat irons. Disulphide bonds are very strong and maintain a permanent shape, unless you break them apart with chemicals.
Japanese permanent hair straightening uses a chemical to break apart those bonds. The stylist then straightens the hair with an iron, setting the shape you what your hair to maintain, and then reseals the bonds with another chemical, permanently locking your hair into that new shape.
This salon in particular also adds a treatment to the hair before resealing it to keep it as moisturized, soft, and silky as possible.
You're not supposed to do it if your hair has been dyed a lot since it can damage the hair, so not everyone is able to get this type of straight perm. Before this I had only ever done one salon treatment, never colored my hair, and very rarely even straightened or blow dried it. But my frizz was crazy! I've had exactly zero issues with frizz in the two months since getting the straight perm.
You can also choose levels of how straight you want your hair to be. Since I have bangs I wanted those to look more natural rather than be perfectly straight, so they didn't apply the full strength treatment there.
I am still able to do some temporary hair curling (via those hydrogen bonds), although it really doesn't stay for any significant length of time at all. If I let me hair dry in a braid it will still come out a bit wavy, but not as wavy as before, and it doesn't last as long. And since I do tuck my hair behind my ears almost all the time, the little wispy hair there now retains that behind-the-ear curl shape.
If you're curious about the chemistry behind how this works, here are some links explaining it more in depth!

*Japanese permanent straightening (aka rebonding) vs Brazilian keratin treatments vs relaxers*
There are a crazy number of comments and quite a bit of confusion about the different methods of hair straightening, so I did a bunch of research to compare the main methods people are mentioning! Hopefully this should answer like 90% of the questions here!! haha
*Japanese permanent straightening aka rebonding aka thermal reconditioning*
-Created in Japan by Yuko Yamashita, patented in 1995
-Permanent (new growth is not affected)
-Uses chemicals to break disulphide bonds in hair, a flat iron to straight the hair (setting it into place), and then chemicals again to re-set the bonds
-New hair that grows out will be natural, so if you don't get that treated as well you can have a strange divide between straight and curly hair
-Can't generally be used on already treated hair (hair that has been dyed a lot, etc)
*Brazilian keratin treatment aka Brazilian blowout*
-Created in Brazil by Mauricio Ribeiro, brought to US in 2007
-Said to last 3 months on average (eventually washes out)
-Coats hair strands in keratin treatment to reduce frizz, not generally strong enough to perfectly straighten curly hair
-This is the treatment that uses formaldehyde (some types don't, but those supposedly wear off much quicker since the formaldehyde is what's used to bond the keratin to the hair)
-Can be used on dyed hair
    *Relaxers*
-Created in USA, 1905 by Garrett Morgan
-Said to last 6 - 8 weeks (oops! I was informed this timeframe is for the time you can last before needing to touch up new hair growth, and that the actual relaxer is permanent)
-There are several types, but they use chemicals of a higher pH than Japanese straightening to break down the disulphide bonds, relaxing tight curls. The bonds are not rebonded afterward like they are in Japanese straightening.
-Some types have strong chemicals that can burn the scalp

It's interesting what you said because all the characteristics given of the japanese treatment matches with the most popular one here in Brazil. And our regulatory agency ANVISA tested all those permanent types around 2010 (including the ones that wear off and the ones that don't and including imported ones too) and ALL of them had or produced an amount of formaldehyde (is this how it's written in english?) beyond healthy. I don't know how it is nowadays, but at that time a chemical engineer was asked to coment and she said that it was impossible (yes, she used these words) to reach permanent straightening without chemicals like these and without a certain amount of it (usually not healthy). At that time I made a lot of research and then chose mine, that I use since then with no problems. But even using it for all these years I always warn people about it to be extra careful.

Rachel & Jun Totally right on all of those. Japanese permanent hair straightening should generally never be used on bleached hair and as you said, for regular coloring, ask your hairstylist. Your hairstylist should recommend a take home strengthening treatment or conditioner if you do this method and color your hair.
For Brazilian keratin treatments, these are ideal for colored hair as they don't break down the disulfide bonds your stylist was talking about. There are a few of them that are highly customizable, so if you want to keep curls but lose the frizz or if you want to stretch out the curl as much as possible, you can do that. With these in particular, using a sulfate free shampoo is important. Also, color should always be done before this treatment.

This is super cool! Also thank you for posting the difference between the Brazilian method and the Japanese method, from my understanding as a stylist, the japanese method is most similar to the perms most people know (where I live in north America/canada) that our grandmothers get, except perm rods are not used to reform a shape, the hair is kept straight instead. And the mix is a thicker consistency than used on curlers (quite similar to what many african Americans do to their hair actually, if we are being honest here). I love seeing hair treatments from around the world and think we could all learn a lot from one another, thank you for sharing your experience!

i live in NYC and i did the permanent hair straigtening at a salon on 32nd street in a Korean hair salon and it is LITERALLY the best $250 i've ever spent. i have super curly hair that gets so frizzy if a drop of water touches it.
I can shower and just let it air dry and it's pin straight. bad weather humidity is literally nothign to me. sweating at the gym? dont have to worry about it anymore. so glad i spent the money. well worth it.

My hair is naturally so pin straight. Personally I never liked it because I feel like it has no volume, but I suppose I should appreciate it more lol. In high school girls would ask me all the time if I straightened my hair. A lot of girls spend so much time trying to get their hair straight. And I'm over here trying to get mine to have some sort of poof or crimp or curly lol >.

One of the main reason I want my hair straight is that I have a slightly big head and cheeks since birth, and my wavy hair makes my head even More Bigger that I really cant stand it anymore. In my country, permanent straight isn't really popular and even if there's one it doesn't really last long like 1 month and I got my puffy hair back... So I am trully happy and excited to see you posted this video! I was hoping to get my Master degree in Japan, and hopefully once I admitted I will go to the salon you went in this video..! Thank you so much for sharing 😊😊

I changed from Hair Relaxer to the Japanese Hair Straightener, and although it takes much longer to do, I much prefer it over Hair Relaxers now. I do it myself at home & the brand of Japanese Hair Straightener I use is called: Shiseido Crystallizing Straight H1 H2 Neutralizer. While the Brand of Hair Relaxer I use to use is called: Dark and Lovely No-Lye Hair Relaxer.

blk bbw do u feel that it looks the same as hers? I have long wavy hair and I absolutely hate putting heat on my hair. I obviously cannot fly to Japan just for a hair treatment so do you think buying it and doing it on your own is just the same?

    • @blkbbw8295
      @blkbbw8295 7 лет назад +1

It does make the much softer than a relaxer does. I find relaxers make the hair muc more stiff and hard. You definitely don't need to fly to Japan to get it done. Though I would recommend getting your hair dresser to do if you buy the Japanese Straightener & it's your first time trying it. Because it's a little bit of a process to go though, for instants, you mustn't get in on your scalp & you have to use a 180 degree hot hair straightener/iron , etc. I buy my Japanese Hair Straightener H1 & H2 from: www.amazon.com/Shiseido-Crystallizing-Straight-Coarse-Resistant/dp/B00C1NYFKU but also check out: www.eki.com.au/shiseido-professional-products/crystallizing-straight to get the right one for your hair type if you don't have afro-American hair as H1 might be too strong for your hair?

    • @blkbbw8295

Ah! Then definitely don't get H1 & H2. For your hair type you will need Shiseido Crystallizing Straight N1 & N2 Neutralizer: www.amazon.com/Shiseido-Crystallizing-Straight-Tinted-piece/dp/B00C1NST7U And that's ok, you're very welcome! :-3

Natsukashiii. Memories of Japan rushing back. I taught at a university in Kanazawa. My absolutely lovely stylist back in Ishikawa explained on the 3rd treatment that it was stripping my hair color (I think he tried to warn me earlier but after 3 years I finally understood the Japanese at the end). I was light auburn until I lived in Japan in my 20's. I also think the heat of the sento got to it; however, just a warning to be careful with that glorious red Rachel! It can get addictive and it may also be much stronger for thinner hair types I was told by my Asian stylist in Canada. I don't regret it, but I probably would only have done it once or twice.

UPDATE: I wanted to tell you about my experience. I am back from vacation and I think about Japan every single day♡ We stayed 14 days in January and we went everywhere from Koga up to Kyoto. He sure showed me around (everywhere touristy with my fav being Puroland)! Anyway, we plan on going back next winter. I simply cannot get enough!♡

Wow, what a difference! I wish they could do this but then not straighten it afterwards...kinda like keeping away frizz but maintaining a natural wave. I have frizzy hair but it makes me look kinda weird when I straighten it!

What you're looking for is called a "Brazillian blowout" treatment. It just "relaxes" the hair and is meant to reduce frizziness.

    Hey Rachel,
    I loved this video!!
So much so that after watching it I did go to nalu and request the same thing that you received.... however, I did have some issues. As a representative of theirs (formal or informal as a customer, I'm not sure) I wanted to share my experience with you in the hopes that the same thing won't happen to other customers (maybe you could please speak to them next time you're in the salon? :) ).
So I went to the salon, told them I wanted to cut my hair into a lob and that I watched your video on permanent hair straightening and that I wanted the rebonding (then I went onto their website & pointed at "rebonding" in Japanese. I then had my japanese husband make sure we were all on the same page and let them know that I wanted straight hair & I wanted the ends to flick inwards if possible (like the photos I gave them).
However, the hairdresser kept insisting that she would do 'natural straight' even though I kept repeating that I wanted rebonding (my hair is undied, it just gets frizzy and has a very light wave through it - so there should be no problems). but she kept saying no, no, i'll just put some stronger chemical in the 'natural straight'. Eventually we just said ok. Then... you know the part where they straighten your hair with the no-heat... well she was using an iron with heat... So I was like ooo noooo, this doesn't seem right!
Then at the end, she blow dried my hair and the ends of my hair were all flicking out in different directions - on the left side they went inwards, on the right side and back outwards, like my natural hair swirl/flick but super strong! I pointed this out to the girl but she just said that the flicky style is 'very in right now' and if I style it differently with my hairdryer it would change the outcome. So I went home and checked... not the case.
I went back 2 days later to get it fixed, and she said that if she cut a few inches off it should turn out straight and I would be able to style it the way I wanted... So she cut it and tried styling it again with heat, however she couldn't get the ends of my hair to not flick out in weird ways again. I think that she basically made my hair more hard with the pem, and whilst I did achieve the silky results, it also hardened the natural kinks in my hair... So now it's impossible to style without ironing my hair ayer by layer (and even still, it sometimes returns to its kinky ways whilst im out and about). Anyway, after she definitely noticed she couldn't style it the way I'd asked, she just awkwardly (but sweetly) smiled and thanked us, saying that's all she had time for today because they were fully booked.
So yeah, I was just really bummed having spent all that money to have my hair semi-permanently(?) infused with kinks... Whilst I don't blame you at all, I was wondering if you could please speak to the someone working there so that when people ask for the straight perm/rebonding featured in this video they get what they ask for. (Because I know so many girls will be/are going to the salon after watching your video! (: )
On a positive note - even if she just didn't do what I had asked, the hair stylist was super sweet. lol!
^^^^ Hope this comment isn't too much of a bummer!

The amount of flashbacks I got from reading this comment lol. I hate when hairdressers try to insist their own style, it always happens to me. I would cut and style my own hair if I could but I have -16 vision so I have no depth perception :c
For anybody else that reads: Don't let your hairdresser change your mind about what you want. You'll end up disappointed in the end. I know it's hard to argue because it's their profession, but it's *your* hair. (ofc there are those cases where the intended style is impossible because of your type of hair or their skill level, but stay adamant unless that is made clear)

ChasingDreams I'm often a victim of this. Many times I wanted to crop my hair, like tomboy short. So I go to the usual salon and ask for it but the hairdresser always insists, "No! It's such a waste! I'll cut it shoulder length!" or "Your face is chubby! It won't look nice in short hair, NO!"
Because they always insist, I didn't get to cut my hair the way I want it. I love long hair but I'm too lazy to care for it. I get frequent headaches so I dreamed of just cropping my hair short. I even thought of just snipping it off super short myself and going to the salon to have it evened out so the hairdressers can't argue with me.

Mai U. Do it! Or go to another salon. I promise you'll feel so free once you finally get it cut *the way you want* because that's what happened to me all the time too. I don't understand the "It's such a waste" comments. Hair grows out. It made me feel like my long hair was for the pleasure of others and when I finally got it cut I was living for myself.

    • @MissMogitha

i Granot the thing is, most people with curly hair can straighten it, and most people with straight hair can curl theirs (temporarily or more permanent), unless you have thick long hair like i do, where curling irons, curlers and even perms won't do anything.
it would be nice to have more versatile hair but I'm definitely not going to cut mine shorter and thin it out to get curls

its understandable. they have been seeing the same kind of hairstyle every morning when they look on themselves in the mirror.
Another thing is that people with round face suits better with straight or boxy style hair and those faces with sharp angles (non-rounded) usually suits better with curvy, rounded hairstyle. (Opposites attract kind of thing)
Annd she has a rounded face so a straight hair is imo makes her look more attractive.

I've had it done before. When considering it, you need to make sure you deal with a specialist that uses the genuine Japanese products and technics. People have been confusing the Japanese perm with the Brazilian blow out and the smoothing keratin treatments, which do not give that kind of results. My Japanese perm (done in Calgary) cost about $400 and it took about 6 hours. I was not allowed to wash my hair for 3 days afterwards. My hair was absolutely silky and straight for about 4 months. I had hair loss following the treatment - not enough to show but it made me reconsider having the perm done again.

I got this done so many times as a young teen in Vietnam. Even with 3 ladies working on your hair, I hated how long it took. 5 hours was the fastest I was even out of a salon for that treatment. Watching your video made my butt hurt. I remember the pain my butt would be in from sitting in that seat for so long. 🙈

I was wondering if it was useful/necessary on already straight hair, if you saw a difference or something :3 ? (I'm assuming here that you're Asian and that there's a high probability that you thus have straight hair, but I could be wrong) ^-^

    • @kin2naruto
      @kin2naruto 7 лет назад +5

There is a difference between straight and VERY straight. Rachel in the video started out with pretty straight hair to start. (That level of curl doesn't even qualify as wavy) My hair is about that "curly" too - but I wear it up on frizz days so a straitening perm doesn't interest me.

    • @Asia-oq2iz
      @Asia-oq2iz 7 лет назад +1

Jade Gardais my hair is actually very thick and wavy because I am half white. I found after a few treatments of this process regardless if you get an oil treatment that your hair will get damaged. Its such a long process that i much rather straighten my hair every day than sit through such a long and brutal process. My hair is long like Rachels (up to my butt). It is so thick that it takes 30 mins to straighten though.

    • @Asia-oq2iz
      @Asia-oq2iz 7 лет назад +2

Jade Gardais my mom is vietnamese and she has pin straight hair and she gets the treatment done. There is no difference before and after since her hair is so straight. My advice is don't do it if you have pretty straight hair because It will damage it.

I was wondering, as I'm from Vietnamese origin (well, 100% Vietnamese but adopted so 100% French as well ^^) so wondered if it was worth the cost/time.
Aaah to think that in Asia (Eastern-North like China, Korea and Japan but also Thailand and Singapore for instance) they get perms all the time to get wavy/lighter hair ...
Do you have any advice on a natural method to get back darker jet black hair ? Mine's turning browner with the sun and sea and time :
