  • Is a $40 oil change worth it? In this video, we put Walmart oil and a Mazda oil filter to the test to see if a cheap oil change is really worth it.
    If you're looking for a way to save money on oil changes, you may have considered using cheaper options like Walmart oil or a different brand's oil filter for your car. But is it worth the potential risks? Find out in this video as we compare the performance and quality of a budget oil change versus a more expensive one.

    Thanks for the video and the effort put into so many of the previous videos. Informative and entertaining. In these high inflation time it make perfect sense for older n/a engine to do what you do. I have a '99 Forester w/ 150k miles and I use cheaper oil and change it often at around 3k miles each time. I also want to thank you for the video on valve clearance adjustment you did. It was helpful as I am adjusting the valves on my EJ and seems no one but you took the time to show how to actually do it with the engine in the car. Many thanks!

      Thank you for your kind words and support! For sure, especially when you put on as many KM as I do, you go through a lot of oil. I'm glad you found the videos helpful, that's the whole reason I make those videos!

    I've ran Super Tech oil with a Wix filter for 20+ years. Never had a problem.

    I tried super tech in my 2016 crosstrek 1 time. I burned almost 3 quarts of oil in 3k miles, Ive since gone back to using General Motors Dexos and I havent had an oil consumption issue. Maybe I just had a bad batch of super tech but Im not willing to trust it again. Thanks for the tip on the Mazda filter! Ill be using that next oil change

    Hi Chase! Good information. I run the Valvoline Maxlife and a Denso filter. The Walmart oil filters are very good quality; I have used them. I’ve been having trouble with aftermarket fuel pumps only lasting about six months. The last one was the whole hanger off of eBay (6 months then stuck). I just put in the OEM Subaru hanger assembly ($400.00 US). What do you think? Am I safe to travel with this thing? 270K miles on a 2007. Thanks!

    • @Chase_Schrader
      @Chase_Schrader  3 месяца назад

      Nice, I havn't heard alot about Denso filters but if you have had good luck with them that, that is great! Hmmm, did you change the filter on the pump or do you often run the tank low? The most common issue causing fuel pumps to die is cavitation due to a lack of fuel. If its all good there, my next guess would be some thing to do with the wiring, but those are always a pain to figure out. I would think you would be good since the pump assembaly is now OEM and some aftermarket sets are just prone to breaking but you just never know

      @Modeltnick 3 месяца назад +1

      @@Chase_Schrader Thanks for your response! I never let the gas go down below one half but I suspect that this hot climate might cause vapor locking which in turn can starve the pump. The original pump went 150K miles. Oh well, we’ll see what happens next. Thanks again for the feedback!

    There is nothing wrong with using a cheap brand oil BUT it is certainly not the same oil in one bottle as it is another and I would hate for you to make that mistake because someone led you to believe that. 30-40 years ago it was closer to what you're saying but there is oil grading beyond the viscosity. Additives, semi-synthetic replacements and micron filtration all play their role in today's oils.
    I would not run Walmart oil but can see why you do with that much mileage. $40 synthetic oil change is hard to beat.

    • @Chase_Schrader
      @Chase_Schrader  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for sharing! Interesting perspective, from what I have found on Blackstone's reports and many forum posts, as long as you use proper specced (like API Service Categories spec) oil and keep up with maintenance there is little to no difference since there is only a few companies that have the resources to manufacture the base. Sure, some brands might have additional additives on top of the base the might make a margin difference in high-performance applications (hence the STi and Motul Oil) but even at that point we are spitting hairs.
      I would be interested in the data regarding the claims that these additives make any significance difference in wear. What oil do you run in your builds?

    • @HomebrewSubaru
      @HomebrewSubaru 3 месяца назад +2

      @@Chase_Schrader I was led to believe you were buying that specific brand in bulk for use in the STi as well. Very well my own mistake, although that does come down to splitting hairs if you’re using Motul and not the Walmart stuff. To each is their own. There is a reason that manufacturers use what they use and recommend what they use. It’s done from real world testing with decades of data.
      I normally run pennzoil or valvoline in my own but no problem using Napa branded stuff in my friends high mileage taxi. It’s more of a preference or price thing absolutely.

      Nawww, there is a bit more evaporation in the Super Tech stuff and with the high temps from the turbo I rather not risk it on a much more expensive engine haha. Yeah, everyone has a bit of angle, and marketing plays a huge factor in it. At the end of the day they all just want to make the most money aha
      Ah nice, for sure! That why I wanted to make a video on it, I knew there was always going to be some differing opinions

    OK Sonny boy. I started running, Mobil-1. When it was introduced in 1978. I got 400,000 miles out of my, Chevy Van with that. 180,000 miles on my Toyota Corolla. Before I just gave it to a friend. Who used it for years. Then I got another Chevy van. And another Toyota Corolla. And at about, 120,000 miles on the Toyota. At 178,000 miles on the Chevy van. I switched over to, Walmart Pure Synthetic. And within just a couple thousand miles. Both the engine on my Toyota Corollaand my Chevy van had blown. Totally destroyed. Not worth repairing.
    Not only was I unimpressed with the Walmart Synthetic. I shall never go near that product ever again! None of their oil! I mean what the hell? I know how to maintain my vehicles. It was only a couple thousand miles without oil. That both of my engines blew up. I couldn't believe it!? What the hell man? Within just weeks of each other. And I had switched them both over.. At around the same time. This stuff is Dangerous! It's no good! I don't know what they make it with? Ground up metal? Sugar and sand? Maybe it's just colored water? It worked like colored water! How does it blow a Toyota engine? How did it blow a Chevy 350? In such short order time? And I had just taken my Chevy van into my mechanic. To have regular routine work performed. And then it blew up. And so I was now, only driving my Toyota. When that suddenly blew up. What, 2.2 L 4 cylinder Toyota engine blows up at 120,000 miles? It does when you put Walmart Synthetic colored water into your crankcase!
    So little boy. You've got a lot to learn yet. I learned, the hard way. The very extremely hard way. By using that shit. It destroyed both of my vehicles. With low mileage.
    I'm sticking with the Mobil oil product. For the rest of my life! It's worth the few extra cents. Otherwise. You get what you pay for. A blown engine! Two blown engines! And I get high mileage out of my vehicles. This should not have happened. I was not abusing nor pushing my vehicles in any way. Chevy Van blew out at 65 mph cruise control on. The Toyota no different. Right on I-35 between Kyle and Austin, Texas. And cruise control on at 65 mph. All gauges normal. Oil pressure. Temperature. A-OK. And lousy Walmart Synthetic colored water oil. Whatever it is? It sure ain't oil!
    And so you are not an expert. And I'm a Retired Engineer. Though not a mechanical engineer. An engineer nevertheless. A top engineer. At the Network Television Level and at the Big Hit Recording Studios. And you are a Twinkie. Squeeze you hard and white filling comes out. From your nostrils. 2 perfect streams. Not on the Internet. But on your shirt. Go blow your nose Sonny boy. As opposed to your engine with that stuff in it.
    I recommend Walmart Synthetic Oil to, NO ONE! DO NOT GO THERE!

      Ahaha this comment made my day! It's quite a tale you've spun there! But let me get this straight: you're blaming Walmart's synthetic oil for blowing up not just one, but two engines? Interesting theory, Grandpa. Sounds like it was a you issue, buddy. I've been just fine with Walmart Synthetic for the last 100,000km. If you've got any real data to back up your claims, feel free to share. Until then, have fun playing with Twinkies...? (I have no idea what you are on about)
