  • The heathen prophet Bilaam had an ‘evil eye.’ What does it mean to have a ‘good eye?’ The story of Balak and Bilaam teaches us a profound lesson about how G-d views this world, and how we can emulate the Divine by using our vision properly.
    The Torah portion of Balak (Numbers 22 : 2 - 25 : 9) is read in the Land of Israel on Shabbat, Tammuz 10, 5782 - July 9, 2022
    The Torah portion of Chukat (Numbers 19 : 1 - 21 : 35) is read outside the Land of Israel on Shabbat, Tammuz 10, 5782 - July 9, 2022

Very interesting portion. Anger is a hard trait. This plays out time and again. I went to a music festival. It was a very hard walk from car to camping in very soft river rock. Like walking in snow. I get to an open area and try to start setting up camp. I can’t walk any more. The group there starts giving me a hard time. It’s a large open area. So I with their permission move to a place away a distance from them. This was early arrival. You end up camped like sardines but today not everyone there yet. I point this out to them. Later that day a wind came up and destroyed their sun shelter. Broke its spine. It was a great wind. Like a rouge wave. I was a Boy Scout so I had duct tape. I remembered someone helping me with a similar problem. So I offered to make a splint from a stick and duct tape. As a stranger passing through I was so harassed. But became part of the tool that saved them baking in 100 degrees sun all weekend. What struck me was them making a comment about my camp facing theirs. And the tents of the Exodus never facing each other. It was a strange weekend. Great music. Strange neighbors. Anger is right up there with envy as a useless trait. Not benefiting anyone. Especially the angry envious person.

Hi... I am trying to find where the tenach says Balaam was with paro. Do you have a verse for that? Thank you!

Shalom Renee! This is not mentioned explicitly in the Tanach, it is part of the vast and rich knowledge transmitted in the Oral Tradition that explains the Tanach, which goes back to the Sinai Revelation and was handed down by Moses. The source of this is the Talmud, Tractate Sotah, page 11a.
