As someone that's not American but an immigrant to this country I always found it weird and really distasteful that Native American issues seemed to always be ignored even though the original sin of this nation was the genocide of the Native Peoples of this land. It is a very special and beautiful and Sacred Land to my peope , as is ALL of the North American continent . Although i have traveled to all 50 states in the country & other parts of the World , It holds a special place in my heart ! When my Native American Grandmother , Grandfather and father were very young , they were taught not to tell anyone of our 1st. Nation Heritage because back then our people were shipped off to Schools that would force us to be indoctrinated into there way of life & be submissive to there ways & "religion" . It was not till we where much older did they tell us the Truth. I come from a very " well to do " family that had great political & influential power in our home state . Saying that we were Native 1st Nation would have had an impact on my family's hard earned " success ". I am both happy & proud to be 1st. Nation Native American ! But not happy about the way we are treated in OUR OWN LAND !

I visited the two Smithsonian museums and as a foreign visitor I found this experience so jarring. The one was full of colonizers and the other was eerily empty. The few colonizers who were in the Native American museum did not even stop to read the history and just quickly left each exhibition. It made them so uncomfortable. My son and I visited the Crazy Horse Monument at sunrise one October day. A flock of turkeys calmly strolled through the empty parking lot. The museum of Native American artifacts is worth the visit. At the orientation film, the faces of Rushmore were superimposed on Crazy Horse's shoulder. They were dwarfed by the huge scale of the Great Chief. After our visit to the Crazy Horse Monument, we drove past the Rushmore entry, and continued our trip west. I suggest visiting Crazy Horse before Rushmore. You may pass on the lesser monument, also.
I wish they featured Native elders and other leaders to speak about the desecration of the Black Hills. I'm 52 yrs old, Black and Choctaw and I remember when the insanity of the Crazy Horse monument was first kicking up. So many, many voices objected and protested. That monument has never made any sense. Crazy Horse never allowed himself to be photographed...so whose image is it based on? The Black Hills are a sacred place -- period.
As a European-American born and raised in the US, I have NO problem if they blasted those heads off that mountain top. There's no reason for them to be there. We should GIVE THEM THEIR LAND BACK!!!! We had NO right to take it. We were wrong and we need to admit it and make amends by returning it back to those who will take much better care of the Black Hills than the US would.

I have been taught that U. S. Government treaties with specific tribes in the Black Hills (as elsewhere) were broken when gold was found there.

As someone that's not American but an immigrant to this country I always found it weird and really distasteful that Native American issues seemed to always be ignored even though the original sin of this nation was the genocide of the Native Peoples of this land.

The Land is there for us to Steward, as Tribal People have done so, we need to build and thrive on our Actions to Regain our National Heritage without sacrificing the Western Spirit and Nomadic Tribes and Cultures which still hope to continue adherence to their Traditional Lifestyles while being able to have their Sovereign Rights Respected, as the Lakota and other Tribal Bands of these Black Hills. It is in our diversity that we can become stronger and we need to clarify our Responsibilities to Negotiate in Faith where these Obstacles can and will be Overcome with Dignity, Determination, and Time as We redefine Ourselves. I received an excellent High School Education in Yankton, SD., and feel these connections to the Black Hills and the loss of Native Herds. We as a Nation need to continue to forge these Potentials by Broadening our Diversity while Retaining the Ability to Evolve Nationally as We become more Interdependent, where Interdependence is from where we Thrive. Such Discussions hold Promises as Compromises of the Realities and Complexities of Creating a more Interdependent Society that can hold Diverse Cultures both Integrated as Our Country Continues to Evolve. Already we are working for these Experiences to Regain Balance and Integrity to Tribal Peoples, yet we must understand their Rights, Heritage, Cultural Goals and Grow to Integrate Our Evolving Relationships to the Black Hills unifying our Responsibilities and Opportunities with Ongoing Resolve so Their Rights Our Respected. Racial barriers were forced on these Peoples that often greatly conflicted with the Cultural and Traditional Lifestyles and Ongoing Tribal Society as Witnessed in South Dakota where these Tribes Still Suffer from such Treaties: whereby, we should continue to Acknowledge, Respect, Integrate, and Reform these Relationships while integrating all of the human potential that already exists here to expand the Potentials of our Country and the Relationships to the Land and its Inhabitants while we can and are beginning to see the return of Bison bison bison. Our Stands need to replaced with Interaction, underlying Content and Context is longing to be Appropriate and Accepted, Assimilation of these Cultures was extremely difficult for Traditional Families, Ways of Life, and Culturally deemed Inferior to Our Country's Standards forcing crippling obligations to forge large rifts between their Cultures, Tribes, Clans, and other Members to Evolve with their Cultural Traditions. It is a challenge, yet Our Country has many challenges. I do not think the President should Grand Stand though, and hope that the Activities were safely conducted, although I would side with the Protestors where Public Safety should be espoused with Social Distancing, masks on Person for use in Crowds or Rallies as the President seems to disregard this and we do need to be conscious of the Pandemic now taking another rise in our greater Country. We need to protect each other with Common Sense. World Wars are not always effective of Removing Inherent Issues and Negotiations as We Evolve, yet their Peoples have fought and defended this Country's Rights and Responsibilities, also, so the Lakota People should be heard and taken Seriously so We can continue to Evolve Peacefully. I admit I am not one for Fireworks and feel the President is highly Insensitive to Resolving Our Nations Struggles, as Integration of Opportunities offer Solutions to the Lakota People,their Lands and Stewardship/Ownership is Integrated with Longer-term Solutions Securing their Opportunities. Integration on these Principles should be forged with Patience, Sustained Negotiations, Equalizing Opportunities as We become Stronger as a Country creating a Stronger Union. Let us strive to reduce any Violent Conflicts to Engage Underlying Stability in these Negotiations.

It is a very special and beautiful and Sacred Land to my peope , as is ALL of the North American continent .
Although i have traveled to all 50 states in the country & other parts of the World ,
It holds a special place in my heart !
My father took us to the Black Hills often , so that we could learn more about our
1st. Nation Culture when we were young .
When my Native American Grandmother , Grandfather
and father were very young ,
they were taught not to tell anyone of our 1st. Nation
Heritage because back then
our people were shipped off to Schools that would force us to be indoctrinated into
there way of life & be submissive to there ways & "religion" .
It was not till we where much older did they tell us the Truth.
I come from a very " well to do " family that had great
political & influential power
in our home state .
Saying that we were Native
1st Nation would have had an impact on my family's hard earned " success ".

y1521t21b5: if you are not being facetious, the Tribal confederations have some interestingly democratic notions on how to govern without greed , with respect for the the vast wisdom of Nature. What would happen, if “the Land,” was returned? as I understand, the People belong to the earth, not the opposite. what happens if the world cannot be owned by a few? We should think more carefully along those lines. If we want to survive as a healthy nation, where our children can run free, breathe fresh air, drink without fear. Equality. The future can no longer be an us vs them. That’s what we should be teaching.

I visited the two Smithsonian museums and as a foreign visitor I found this experience so jarring. The one was full of colonizers and the other was eerily empty. The few colonizers who were in the Native American museum did not even stop to read the history and just quickly left each exhibition. It made them so uncomfortable. It was the saddest part of my trip
My son and I visited the Crazy Horse Monument at sunrise one October day. A flock of turkeys calmly strolled through the empty parking lot. The museum of Native American artifacts is worth the visit. At the orientation film, the faces of Rushmore were superimposed on Crazy Horse's shoulder. They were dwarfed by the huge scale of the Great Chief. After our visit to the Crazy Horse Monument, we drove past the Rushmore entry, and continued our trip west. I suggest visiting Crazy Horse before Rushmore. You may pass on the lesser monument, also.
I wish they featured Native elders and other leaders to speak about the desecration of the Black Hills. I'm 52 yrs old, Black and Choctaw and I remember when the insanity of the Crazy Horse monument was first kicking up. So many, many voices objected and protested. That monument has never made any sense. Crazy Horse never allowed himself to be photographed...so whose image is it based on? The Black Hills are a sacred place -- period.
