- Step inside HGTV designer Alexandra Hutchison's 640-square-foot main floor, which includes her living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Get her decorating tips for creating a cohesive look from one room to another, adding unexpected pops of colour and designing practical built-in storage.
In this video you'll see before and after shots of her home renovation. In the entryway, Alexandra used bold blue paint to add interest to the space, and applied the same blue paint to the living room ceiling for drama. Using a vintage mid-century modern teak chest in the living room provides ample storage. The warm wood tones continue in the kitchen where teak-look cabinets and wood-panelled walls around the dining area create a sense of luxury. Alexandra created a restaurant-like dining nook with a velvet-upholstered kitchen banquette that doubles as storage. Over in the small principal bedroom, neutral-toned grasscloth wallpaper with a hint of gold creates a cosy vibe. Re-arranging the bathroom layout made the space practical, and it now features porcelain wall tiles and herringbone marble floor tiles.
Love it! Especially the pops of blue everywhere
Wow!!! What a great home. Yes it is a small amount of space ,but it just shows how great planning can make it live big. Absolutely brilliant.
I love beautiful, cozy homes. This is one!
Gorgeous!!!!! The space looks huge, warm, and inviting!
Those blush dining room chairs 😍
Finally, a home with personality! I love the artwork throughout. The Wedgewood blue ceiling is something that sounds tacky to me, but it's actually lovely to look at. Great home!
' The bathroom that we inherited.'? Interesting statement. Fridge and cabinet surround is epic AND goals!
I love everything about this space! It has lots of color for one thing. Well done.
Hi Alexandra
I was a little unclear ... Was your front entrance shared by your tenants? I would also have loved to see the shower as well.
Where your pretty pooch was ... Was that a rear door? Where did your washing machine go??
I thought you made the absolute most of your space and I would need all the storage you put in .... Very creative use of space! The bulkhead in the lounge worked really well.
I loved the colours and how it blended from room to room! I loved that it didn't look like a showroom but your home and you achieved your goal...it is elegant with a luxurious feel!! The paintings are gorgeous!
Currently we are building a new home (Melbourne, Australia). I am getting some wonderful inspiration from videos like yours! I have some pieces of furniture from grandparents etc. that I need to include ... I hope I can make my home look as together as yours is as well as still including my mismatched pieces!!!!
Thank you for sharing! Best wishes and enjoy your home . Debby
Such a lovely space. Warm and inviting throughout.
That is a really beautiful house. Finally, something with some color as well.
+DinNDee Nice use of color
Great job, has a bit of a Parisian flair as well. I also see a bit of American New Orleans flair. Love it!! So well put together. Seems everything has a story, which is what make a home. Perfect!! Xx
I'm American, and this is fantastic.
Gorgeous. Funny how you guys use the saying..."A sight for sore eyes" differently than we do down under. A sight for sore eyes here is a good thing. lol. Love what you did, love the blues and contrasting colours. Thanks for sharing your home. xx
+Bunny Mad I was really surprised to hear her use it in that way. Sore eyes want to see something pleasant to soothe the eyes. So I think she misunderstood the meaning. In the UK we certainly say it to mean a good thing like you guys do.
Same in Canada. She just used it wrong.
You're a good designer. You've obviously had a well thought-out plan.
Just the right balance for me. It is a small space (many RUclips channels tall about small spaces but show examples of large rooms).
There's the greys and whites that I like with colour. There's functional furniture that is not too cluttered.
i really love the entry way wicker pieces on the wall and how you painted living room ceiling. every thing is nice, but those were my favorites. keep up with your passion.
This is so thoughtfully well done..! ❤
This is such a warm beautiful space. I love it! Love all the natural light too.
Loved the entire space!
I absolutely loved the decor and hoe the space was utilized. It appeared so open. My favorite was the dining area!
I absolutely love your home. PERFECTION
Love the bathroom! You did an amazing job in this smaller space! It's beautiful!!
Brilliant! I enjoy her work! What fun!!
I just found this video 3 years later and the space is still current and just beautiful! The choices were not too trendy so the style held up. You did a fabulous job in this house! Thanks for sharing.
I like this very much. Love the art work. And, of course, the cute doggie!
Lovely home. Perfect for a couple.
Love your space, you did an excellent job. My favorite is the blue ceiling. Stunning. The dinning area I feel needs different chairs that won't make that space look so cramped.
this was good use of a small space. I got some ideas for my own small space. I just think that the eating area was just way to cramped and small.
Beautiful! Inspired me for living room layout and banquette seating/storage in the kitchen.
Love it ! Particularly that nook in the kitchen
That entrance way vibe and colours 😍
Great use of space, beautiful design
That entrance way vibe and colours!! :O
There is too much going on in the kitchen and living room, but the bedroom is perfect love how much bigger and light it looks
Exactly! The living room has too much furniture cramped into a small space
I like this room! A lot of personality!
Beautiful work. Your dog blends in with your sofa too. ;)
SO BRILLIANT..........................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice ideas for a small space
Beautiful! Excellent job!
Thank the LORD!!! COLOUR!!! Loved your home, warm, cozy, not WHITE!! Lol 😂
Really nice job
I fell like the living room has too much going on. Maybe taking away those flowers and some of those books would help.
Other than that, REALLY nice job
I like your artwork and the choice of that blue in the hallway and ceiling was brave. I wonder though if it will stand the test of time especially since it must have reduced the sense of height in those rooms having that color in the ceiling.
This is really amazing
Very pretty space and interesting ideas, nice use of colour. But may I correct your use of the phrase 'a sight for sore eyes' which actually means when something is nice to look at, a relief for your sore eyes, if you will. Like a glass of water when you are really thirsty. You have used it as though it means the opposite, as though something is unpleasant to look at.
The designers on this channel do not speak well. C'est domage.
she creates an interesting warm calming sophisticated home.colourful, and knits together.i disagree she is not irritating, she has a speech pattern which is over stretched sometimes.she will know why she does it.she is creative and does better than me on larger budget.i take away from this that i can introduce an interesting chair to a design also something to anchor a space.
Very cozy home.
xtra small but xtra functional 👍👍
Nice Job
Beautiful!!
some cool ideas here!
bathroom was an eyesore not a sight for sore eyes.... from Shillong India
Beautiful home!
Very pretty home!
Beautiful
Lol, a "sight for sore eyes" means that something is beautiful, not ugly.
maybe she was sarcastic about it
kirkwood512 maybe she meant that the sight of it made her eyes sore? Lol
It means that your eyes have been sore looking at all the things that have gone before (in my case, all the white, white spaces) and are relieved to see whatever is being spoken about (like the beautiful colors used in this home).
Maybe she was going for "a sorry sight" or an "eyesore"
Love your decor
I just found your video can you please tell me the color you used on the ceiling and entrance? Absolutely beautiful,I hope you enjoy your home and have great memories built there!
+Yvonne Clark Thank you! I believe it was Hawaiian Sky by Behr
cute pup!
This is beautiful.
Really lovely
absolutely lovely
This is lovely home, beautifully decorated. It seems smaller than 60 square meters though. I have 52 square meters and it looks much bigger. Was there some other room that wasn't shown?
absolutely stunning! but where's the tv? :)
Bellisima!!!!! Adore ur house
Love it
I love it
love the dining area are retro chairs back I've seen that alot as of late & velvet. love it just curious? 💓
Show me some how some tiny houses are decorated
very well done
For some reason when they first showed the seating area in the kitchen, my eyes saw navy blue behind the painting, then I realized it was white with what looks like a deep blue velvet material on the bench, but i got so excited that she painted the wall a navy, i was a bit disappointed it was just white. Id love to see it redone as a navy...i think it would look just stunning.
Love how cohesive the designs are throughout the different spaces. But why are american stoves always so huge and hideous with this part sticking up at the back?
Amazing
Does anybody know who painted the picture in dining area? It is amazing!
That living room is begging for a giant flat screen TV above that perfect long sideboard. No TV where you lounge!? No TV anywhere!? At least she's not afraid of color & pattern and her taste in lamps is impeccable. But TV.
messy and not catchy.. when you said, I had a dialogue with the furnitures...4:47, actually they were screaming..NOOOO..don't buy us...you have a weird taste in decorating a house LOL..its true
where did you get the chair in the living room? Love!
2:04 what is naahshniäll? Ive been wondering for years haha
where does she put her shoes and coats when you walk in?
Why would you remove your shoes at the front door?
How much was the total renovation and decoration cost?
So your formal dining sits 3 people, who have a view of a stove and when you enter the house you put your shoes um. . . where?
+Jordan Chrisstian there is a bench/sofa in the dining room, which sits two people comfortably. Plus the 2 chairs. Depending where they live, they might not need to take their shoes off. We never do, in the state we live in. Wow, man use some of the brain cells god gave you.
hi Alexandra, this a very beautiful design. how can i contact u? i like the way u adapt the condo furnitures into ur new house. however i am downsizing. i have big and sentimental furnitures that i want to bring along when i move out. i really like ur kitchen despite the space. in singapore we have the same kitchen space. how do i get advice from you?
I'd love to know the dimensions of the bathroom.
Beautiful picture in dinning area. Anybody knows who is the painter and title?
+jasna ashour the artist is from Toronto and her name is Dessa Harhay
No television?
I have dialog with a Tiffany necklace, but so far it hasn't come home with me.
One thing I did not like, was the towels above the toilet seat. Such a bad idea. It will absorb all the bacteria and than someone will use it.
I’m no professional interior designer, but I feel like some of the spaces are way too busy for me. Too many patterns for me personally.
2:15 schnauzer alert!
How is this a small space? I'm in a tiny apartment!
Not every sentence is a question. STOP IT.
Miranda sings
I have your "twin" home in PEI, would you come help? lol
The way you end your sentences like they're all questions? Its annoying. couldn't finish the video it was too distracting.
for my taste the house is too busy with all nick nack , to many colours blue ceiling??? just busy i hot headacke to just look at!!
bedroom too clostophobic, i wouldnt sleep there if you pay me!!!!
Anyone else creeped out by the dog?
someone talks too fast.
Too colour messy...
her eyes lol
dont think she understands what a sight for sore eyes means
+KK CC I'm sure she meant to say " an eyesore".
