The only thing that really annoyed me about Alien Isolation that ruined it for being 'scary' was how immensely buggy the AI was. I am not talking the 'wall hacks', more how if you kept being unpredictable that it would break the AI and cause it to start teleporting and clipping through things. As well as killing you in what was intended to be safe zones. It is like one chapter you're supposed to hide in locks, next under desks, then behind objects, then back to lockers. One key element with horror games is that it needs to give the player a reason to carry on with their experience. For example, I loved Resident Evil 7 not only for its story, but also the many methods you had at your disposal to fight back against enemies. However, games like Outlast 2 constantly kept you in a tense position with no hope of safety or defence. Why would you want to continue with a nightmare with no hope of survival when you can just wake up (exit the game)? It’s why I’m honestly sick and tired of horror games where you can’t defend yourself.
