Yeah, I'm not an expert by any stretch but I believe this is being post processed with equipment at the show. Nevertheless, the whole packet is just c'mon... out of this world. The first time I heard this I got ecstatic, really mesmerized. Also, side note, this got 6x more views than Leona Lewis'... Just astounding performance.

i was in college and having a hard time...school, work, family issues, relationship problems and I used to listen to Roberta Flack's version over and over and over, and hearing Matt's version was absolutely sublime...wow...I hope he manages his success well and doesn't fall apart...I know he is super fragile but...he really has a gift to share with the world that should never be denied...smh

I HAVE NEVER EVER HEARD ANYONE DO "THE FIRST TIME" AS GOOD AS THIS GUY MATT CARDLE. Truly off the charts in perfection and creativity. I am speechless.
It is fashionable in some quarters to criticize this performance. But the fact is that it’s really good. There are many professionals who could not equal it, even in a studio after a dozen takes.
the disappointing thing about the x-factor is it becomes judge versus judge, not about the talented acts trying to impress the public. in my opinion the mentors should just be that and have no comments on the night and have totally independent judges ie the public, its to easy to vote off your competition
Eric Watson The most disappointing thing is that it IS exactly that ... a tool for "impressing the public", nothing more. Ultimately, a so-called talent show should take pride in the artists they uncover.
That this isn't the case became painfully clear in how they treated Matt once he struggled free and went back to being indie. Even without their promotional machine he's still charting Top10, No.1 indie even. Yet they have all but _erased_ him from their history. Cause any promo they'd grant him by even acknowledging or mentioning him wouldn't earn them a single cent, now with Matt having 2 more albums out and releasing a 4th one very soon.
A true mentor would feel _so_ proud to have set someone on their own feet. They don't. They're obviously offended.
I appreciate that you enjoy this but to dismiss critiques of the performance as "fashionable" is rude and unjustified. This is a simple song with a simple, clear message. All of these vocal histrionics distract the listener and detract from the song. I understand why the contestants do this to rouse the audience and exhibit their vocal range, but as a performance of this song it's a failure. What is "fashionable" today is inserting as many vocal gymnastics into any song regardless of the situation or the message in the lyrics. Audiences can't seem to get enough. If a person sang this tender love song to someone in this manner it would leave their loved one wondering, "Why are you SCREAMING at me?"

I'd just love to see/hear how this Roberta Flack version should be sung without the vocal gymnastics x factor _supposedly_ introduced to it. So.... link us to a source please, Rick.
Some parts of this sounded like a classical instrumental performance. Just so beautiful.

Hey, I grew up in the Era that this song came out. Matt, NAILED it. sometimes it isn't about if the singer nailed the tone, pitch, music is about, "Did it move your soul? Did the song touch your heart?" And, the answer to this guy singing this is, yes, to both!

Its funny how some people on here say he is flat here or there or off pitch in some places......people, you do realize that this is pure voice without all that filtering crap we listen to today. The human voice isn't perfect and this performance is absolutely amazing. If you think this performance is "a little off" then you are too used to listening to perfect, adjusted human voices that we hear on the radio. Well done Matt Cardle, your voice is just about as good as the raw human voice can get.

8 years and I still remember watching this and thinking....yes...that’s how I feel.
He has got over 25.000.000 views now. It's clear that his voice is outstanding, and that the audience was blown away by this performance. Congrats to Matt and all his fans.
By denying his existence, many of his fans lost sight of him. Not necessary, because he's still alive and kicking and the voice is still great. His next (4th) album will be released soon.

steven tyler and bono go up to G5#, adam lambert goes to F5 the highest i heard, calb johnson, which is all higher. tom chaplin (keane) goes to D#5 in a song i know which is same as cardle in this performance. Also a note, matt sings it in falsetto which does not go into vocal range according to some theories adam lambert sings F5 in full voice so thats alot higher then matt. And these are just from the top of my head and only from the popular music.

AminTheMystic yea i probably missed a lot of singers there =D. Michael had a really squeaky voice that feels more like a whisper so i was never really a fan and dont know his work into details. He does hit the notes and has a very unique tone i think everything he achieved in music speaks volumes about that. I also left out freddie mercury, roy orbinson and well its a really long list most likely xD

Tonight was press night for Memphis, the Musical. There were rave reviews for the entire cast, but especially Matt Cardle. Critics who were ready to carve him up and eat him for breakfast are calling his performance a revelation, praising not only his singing, but his acting as well. A true star!

I started singing at old age (37) and if I would be able to reach 60% of his singing talent I would be satisfied (or less even). This man has an almost perfect technical talent when it comes to singing but maybe more important he really got the feeling. You belive the words he are singing. He just got it. Love it.

Try some of his own songs like "Water" or "Millionaire". Mindblowing what this guy can do with his voice. It's an instrument in its own right. Don't let yourself be fooled tho. Basically Matt is a rocker to boot. A very versatile one. You should be able to find these songs on your itunes region. The album "The Fire" was made available world wide. Otherwise check my playlists :)
Not even close in quality compared to the original.
Flat notes, pitch issues and off key in parts.
But it takes guts to take that song on for a guy, unfortunately it falls well short of flacks masterpiece.
It didn't convey the message as the song requires, it was for me a 6 out of 10.

Orginal was done by Peggy Seeger in '57. Very very very much different from all its modern covers. Not that that's a bad thing tho. But one should be aware of the fact that this song was out and about 15 years before it was chucked at Roberta.
And also keep in mind that all that we have of those later performers are studio versions. Even video recordings of live shows from way-back-when are no guarantee that it was _not_ done to track, simply to prevent the very same ptich/key "mishaps". Rule of thumb: If there's no speakers around pointing at the singer and they are moving, it's probably not "live". They wanted the stage look pretty on TV, not cluttered with boxes and stuff.
This performance, tho, was done live, yet on an open and noisy stage without proper, i.e. sufficient and working, monitoring equipment, resulting in interferences from audience and feedback delays.
In a more iintimate acoustic setting Matt's version is mind blowing.

The greatest ever cover version, unbelievable
Often, I find myself coming back to this video. From the first time I heard it...I was floored. I'm not a singing coach, nor a professional, but I've sung before. Yes, in the beginning of the song, there were signs of nerves, but around the 1:10 mark (to me) his heart, soul, sheer emotion and passion went into the song. Like the judge said..I felt every word he said. VERY FEW singers and songs do that to me. I cannot say enough good things about this performance. Truly gives me goosebumps and will forever be at or near the top of my list of favorite videos to watch and listen to.
