- How To use Auto Hold on VW group vehicle.
So the 2012 onwards model of Golf comes with an AutoHold feature to prevent the car rolling and help with Hill starts. It can be found on almost every other VW group car as well now. Personally I love it but lots of people will be dead against it or find it confusing, So here's a little video to help understand how it works

Just took delivery of my mk7.5 golf and was wondering how this worked. This has been a big help, thanks!
It's a mystery why so many youtubers can't make videos as informative and concise as this.
Thanks Jonathan!
I am not sure why people dislike this system. It is brilliant and I love it on my Golf 7. I have no problem moving uphill. I am also a new driver.
Once I parked a car with auto hold in a very steep downhill position. When I drove again, normally I will hold the brake and release it gently to slowly rolling down without pushing the gas pedal, but the car didn't allow me to do so. I had to press the gas pedal to release the auto brake, which is scary to me. What would you do in such situations?
@@haibuihoang I am not sure how your car is configured but on my golf I would give a bit more gas to be able to move off while pressing the clutch. The car should remain stationary with active auto hold. Then, I would start releasing slowly the clutch and just before the clutch engage, the brake should be released automatically. At this point I use clutch control and give more or less gas to control my speed. I tested that on a fairly steep hill and it worked quite well.
@@turtletrading4207 That's an electric car! When I release the brake and it starts rolling down, then it comes to stop as the auto hill is activated. So that I need to press the gas while going downhill.
@@haibuihoang Wait what? If you have an electric car, then the process should be infinitely easier. You just have to press on the accelerator gently to move off.
@@haibuihoangIf you don’t know how to use auto hold downhill or you are scared that you have to apply the acceleration while starting from downhill, you can always turn off the auto hold and use your car normally without auto hold.
Remember this feature is your personal choice, if you want to use, not use or when you want to use.
For new drivers my first car had this and when I tell you it’s the best thing ever it’s so easy to use and it took me like 10min to get used to it
What was your first car?
@@liban2 7.5 golf R
@@Thenormalguy_real_one bloody hell MK7.5 Golf R as your first car? I'm looking at a standard MK7 Golf as my first car
@@liban2 nah man I’m just joking I got a 1.0 7.5😭😭😭😭
Auto hold is amazing. Never realised how useful it was before I got a Mk7 Golf!
Nothing better than a conventional manual handbrake. The manual one will probably never go wrong, the electronic one could fail several time during the life of the car
Tom Jardine Let me guess robots are going to take over the world too? Lol
Your not wrong and they’re pretty expensive to replace aswell I’m driving golf mk6 I was going to purchase a mk7 but because of the electronic feature it was a no go for me
@@kriskringle6298 irony aside he isn't wrong. The electronics could fail and leave your car stuck in a completely undesireable moment. And they are expensive to fix too. Electronic handbrakes are really not necessary and add potential failure points.
@@pickle24 the electronic handbrake is a necessary thing if you want to have an autonomousand smart car, this was the last thing a car couldn't do itself, with the electronic handbrake, the car is safer and and more autonomous, this is a step that will be integrated in every car just like switching from a manuel to an automatic, this is the future
@@wolfinblouse5286 but i don't want that. Not everyone wants that.
I'm thinking of buying my first VW car, a T Roc with a DSG box and Electronic Parking brake and Auto Hold as has my existing manual Golf. How does the DSG operation integrate into the Auto Hold on steep-ish inclines. Presumably it hold the car stationary without foot on brake but is AH released as soon as the accelerator is pressed and is there then enough revs to pull away?
I simply love the Autohold feature because it holds the car braked at a stop and also automatically activates the parking brake when you park the car and stop the engine
great - and again so much clearer than the VW manual !
One of the best feature on modern cars.
I love the electronic handbrake on my Octavia; can't forget to pull it on or off. Didn't know about the seatbelt thing though.
I always loved golfs. I'm getting the money to go get a MK7 in few months! Expensive used car (around €10k) but worth it!
i just bought an MK7 from 2013 , 138.000 km on it mint condition. For 8500,- stil have to pick it up though. ( waiting on the anual checks and oil change and airco re-fill etc
@@brotherlou-eAhh enjoy it man! That's very decent stats for a car!
@@Kazer_00 Did you get yours already ?
@@brotherlou-e Nopes. Still another 2 months work for the dream to come true hahah. Getting there slowly but surely. Cant wait though. Might map it to 150hp if I have no luck getting a stronger version of it. I was going for GTD or GTI either is cool. But I'll see how the search goes.
Very useful video - informative yet concise and to the point.
lets say im in a kinda steep hill, i have the autohold on, so that means i dont need to hold my foot on the break, i can find the biting point give gas and as soon as i give gas the autohold will disengage? i have a mk 7 tdi 2014 model, and i dont think the feature works, as the LED doesnt turn on when i press the button i think it might be broken. but i just want to know how it works in hills.
Thanks. This is much more helpful than the relevant paragraph in the "german english" manual!
Lesen Sie Deutsch Einweisung)
So basically the vehicle will never move unless the doors are shut and seatbelt is fastened??
does Auto Hold work in conjunction with the auto start/stop system? (engine shutting off at stop light)
I have had this on my Manual Golf Mk7 for 5 years now and it works flawlessly, however, in this video are we talking about a manual or DSG box?
Thanks for video. I noticed that Auto Hold keeps brake lights lit as if your "heavy" foot remains on brake pedal! It's basically holding on the hydraulic pressure. Whereas the "normal" parking brake holds rear wheels "mechanically" without dazzling the car behind you with bright red lights!! That's why I don't use Auto Hold.
I always wondered why people were keeping their foot on the brake and blinding me with their lights, now I know why.
Lmao, why would you go into neutral and apply the parking brake at a light? If thats your intend then just shut the car off and use engine brake. I think its a great idea that it lights up the rear cuz otherwise people may think youre driving off and rear end you
@@michaelfields1113 when people drive an automatic car they have to keep the foot on the break too...
Very useful vid. Can I ask though, is it bad practice to just use ‘auto hold’ rather than putting the car in neutral when waiting at a light etc? Is it bad for the car to keep it in drive whilst stationery with the auto hold on?
idk about "drive" . i never had an automatic. But i never switch to neutral at a light. I shift back to one and keep my foot on the clutch
Just passed my test and my new car is on its way with this feature on .. I’m slightly worried tho as it takes me a little longer than an experienced driver to find the biting point especially on hills etc , it’s a diesel , I’ve basically learnt to always apply gas before lifting the clutch up to avoid stalling so I’m gonna struggle with this 😂
Same how are u getting on
Hi does the auto hold writing illuminate white as the orange light is on mine but the button isn’t white like the others
Thanks, that was very clear and concise!
Thanks Chris!
How long can I use auto-hold? When I stop the car and waiting for something for example 5 minutes, is it good stop on auto hold or give Parking position ?
You can stop for however long you like, the car will eventually automatically turn on the E brake after some time
Did you play Raymond Coliche in Gone in 60 Seconds?
Is this system usefull on the hill? I mean when you stop at hill and you need to start from hill will this automaticly turn on parking break?
If you have Auto Hold turned on and you press on the brake pedal, then yes
You cannot use the parking brake on a hill for a hill start because you have to have your foot on the foot brake in order to release the parking brake (if auto hold is off). This is exactly the reason you use the auto hold.
@@jacintarene_ only if going in reverse. Hand brake releases when you press the accelerator in 1st gear
That's the end of being able to reverse up to a low obstacle while looking backwards with the door open.
Dumb comment !
didn't think about that, I'm about to get a golf with this feature and park every evening using your stated method. I'm still going to try it. curiosity kills the cat i suppose 🤣
When should I use neutral ???
When I use auto hold at the stop, should I still press on the brake pedal?
No need. Auto Hold does just that. After the green light appears on the dashboard, you can release the brake pedal and the car will remain stationary.
Actually if the auto hold is on, and you release the foot brake, you’ll notice if you try to press the foot brake back down you won’t be able too. I couldn’t explain why, but I’ve noticed this. Letting go of the brake to prepare to take off but then changing my mind and being nervous that the auto hold might let go (anxiety lol) then I go to press down the foot brake and it’s locked itself in place hahaha
Would you consider selling this car?
I find these electronic systems dangerous. I have had these disengage, causing rollback on a hill when testing for clutch bite point. Maybe the trick is to hold that little lever up while testing.
Do i keep it on (D) or i should put it on (N) while stopping in traffic light within the auto hold
MOHSEN AQ you can keep it on D, no need for putting it in N, the clutches are not being worn when auto hold works
i hate it already
Auto hold is the reason we're all blinded by brake lights at traffic lights now! I always use the parking brake when stopped to kill the brake lights
Mine releases as soon as I start to release the clutch with no time to attain the bite.
Hi Ian, it shouldn’t release until the clutch is slightly lifted, and also the accelerator is slightly depressed. If you leave the accelerator until the very last moment it should do the job. It’s a bit weird to get used to
@@Luke_G mine is the same as Ian’s, once I start to release the clutch (nowhere near biting point) it disengages auto hold and car can easily roll back. It’s literally the slightest release of the clutch that turns it off…..I only bought a 2016 mk7 a month ago. Do you think it’s a software issue ?
@@Massim2024 I’m having the same issue. Recently bought a MK7 golf 2013 and I started rolling back on a hill when I lifted the clutch to get the biting point
@@poppybaines2931 I went into My local Volkswagen few weeks ago and they told me that it’s normal for auto hold to release with just clutch…I don’t believe them
@@Massim2024 I am going to keep testing mine and bring it my local Volkswagen dealership too. I don't believe them! It is a really dangerous way to pull away from anywhere. Also it goes against everything I know about the routine of setting off after 8 years of driving.
Went to look at a new Golf and didn't proceed purely because of this. Hate it. Give me a manual handbrake every time.
US golfs get manual handbrake
I hated this feature when I first got the car, but now I am familiar with it, I like it! Only tip - if doing slow manouvers on a gradient (like a 3 point turn on a hilly road) I found the "auto hold" essential!!! If you try and use the "manual hold" it is harder to control the car. Also the "auto hold" works well if you are driving in a multi-storey car park.
My golf 6 has a manual handbrake and an auto hold feature ;)
I dont think it light up the braking lights tho i could be wrong about that since i usually sit inside the car haha. Anyways it applies if you press the brake firmly and holds the car for about 5 secs, i think its meant for hill starts since its a manual, idk if autos have it. If you press the brake lightly it doesnt do it and theres no button that im aware of that disables it, thought idk why you would want to disable it
Electronic parking brake is much better.
What is the sound on 1:18?
Is it the Auto Hold button being pressed or is it the handbrake pulled up or down?
It’s the seatbelt being plugged in
How to use AUTO hold 🤔
Clue is in the name.
How does this help with hill starts? It doesn't!👎
My auto hold is not working how can i fix it? please
King Of Dunk go to your local vw
Sell it
Use your manual handbrake instead.
So my auto hold won't turn on my golf 7, It has worked normal untill now but now it just won't light up
