SONOR SQ1 Sonic Bliss - Why I Love the SQ1 Series Drums

- Drum nerd time. I get a lot of questions with regards to my 'preference' when it comes to which Sonor line/series of drums I favour. The common answer I give is "depending on the gig...". Valid question though since I do own and have owned many different series of Sonor Drums. Obsessive levels in fact. German made Prolite, Designer, Vintage, Phonic, HiLite, Teardrop and even the more 'economic' lines such as AQ2, AQ1, AQX, Special Editions, Force etc. - I've nerded on ALL of them.
In the end sound is personal, taste and inspiration obviously comes into play. But the ability to achieve the sound you have in your head with ease and be able to capture that said sound in recordings / live is an advantage to me. And to be able to also change the sound at whim (by tuning or change of drum heads) adds to the versatility factor I always try to achieve; the SQ1 delivers on all this. I hope I am able to reflect the 'sonic bliss' I get recording these drums - even watch out for the low end growl of the 18" floor tom. Maybe I should've controlled it a bit more, but I love it! Thanks for checking it out.
Recorded at Dirty Laundry Studios Brisbane QLD, Australia SEPT 2022

I have a Sonor SQ1 in GT Black..20,10,12,14 floor and 6.5 snare I've played drums for nearly 40 yrs and had just about every make of drum kit ..DW,Ludwig Pearl.Mapex,Tama and Yamaha and I can honestly say Sonor SQ1 and SQ2 are the best for sound and quality...imo
I have the 12,14 & 20. They recorded massive! Great sounds.
That 18” Floor is a beast!! Incredible low end
Gotta love Sonor Birch
I’m now sold on 10,13,16,18 toms 100%, cheers!
I wanted to give myself as much chance in achieving max separation; tuning intervals wise. Then I eventually added a 8", 16" and a 12". I rarely have 2 floor toms in my set-up now but the 16 & 18 is just so monstrous in boom - I think I'll do it more (live and studio). Im glad you're considering going down the same path!
10-13-16 makes THE most sense! Sounding great! BOOOOM!
Man those drums sound fat, wet and full. 💚💚💚👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Great Playing man! Love it 😄Have an Accent Kit. Wish it had better Lugs though;)
I do not know what Sonor drums have that makes them sound so tight and powerful at the same time. Definitely, my dream drum set would include Sonor bass drum and toms. Sadly, I've never owned a Sonor kit bc they're expensive where I am and I've always been able to find decent sets for less.
That aside, I really disliked the sound of the cymbals you're using here. Too trashy and dry. I was enjoying the melodic exploration you did in your fine solo but the cymbals cut the flow and did not help you in creating an atmosphere to deliver your rhythmic discharge, which is what any good cymbal should provide: atmosphere.
I'm also a proud SQ1 owner. :)
I'd like to hear them with some tension on the heads.
Your kit sounds amazing especially the low end is awesome. Sonor makes the best drums in the world!!!
Thank you for the feedback Olli. I definitely love Sonor as well. I'm lucky to play their great drums.
Orchestration intéressante
Oh yes that does sound like something out of a dream! Love that green too.. 🤯🔊
Sonor makes the best drums on planet Earth. No other drums sound as good as the SQ series.
Holy crap, that sounds very, very nice! Nice relaxed playing too! I've gotta get me some sonor drums...amazing! What heads do you have on those bad boys?
This is not thenatural sound. You can clearly hear the toms and kick being heavily processed.
@@Zazquatch1 I fully understand, as I’m a self-taught recording engineer of many years - I can still get a sense the natural sound of those drums is very nice, as I’ve heard several other recordings of Sonor SQ1 in various environments and microphones. Nice drums!
That 18" could create an earthquake during a live gigg.
Really love the 10, 13, 16, 18 with 22 setup. How do they sound with a clear ambassador on top?
I haven't tried them with Clear AMB yet. I have tried the 18" with a Coated AMB though; I actually prefer it over an EMP in terms of lower fundamental note. But needs control / muffling. I currently have Coated EMP on everything else. This 'Soundcheck Video' is worth a check, slightly 'drier' mix ruclips.net/video/AOAUwQZrP4Q/видео.html
Oh....and I am still waiting for stock of an 18" Coated Emp. Hence you won't see it / hear it on the other video.
I saw the soundcheck video, sounds great. I personally dont like the sound of coated heads, but thats a personal taste thing :)
I also checked for 18" heads, but are hard to come by... Maybe experiment with a kickdrumhead...

Sounds great!
Thank you!
Sounds amazing!!!
All I can think when I hear those floor toms is Thomas haake
Wow, what a compliment - funny timing too I finally had the guts to attempt a Meshuggah track. Its on my Instagram though, not on here. Check it out at @b_ry_mac
What heads are you using on them?
Currently I’ve got REMO Colortones (just coloured Emperors really). I’m about to try some REMO Black Suedes on them.
