    I don’t worry if Mac can beat someone 10-12 years his junior.
    But to see a 60 year old man absorbing a serve like that, getting to the net, and still hitting those angles shows that he’s still one of the greatest ever, and probably the greatest senior in the world

      Its because EVERY REASON Mcenroe won all that time at worlds best? Is STILL here in this video. He won with talent touch good volleys and great hands.....he is probably serving HARDER with that racquet than in 84....(BEST TENNIS SEASON EVER BY VEEEEEEERY FAR).........but Petey is the 2nd best server to ever hold a rqcquet....next to Ivanisevic.......and the ONE THING THAT GETS BETTER WHEN RETIRED? A players serve.....ALWAYS GETS BETTER.....number one? because no more 5 hour practice days and your arm is LIVELY.....number two/ Ivariably the tech is better. Pete regrets NOT CHANGING raquets and giving into the tech.....he now serves 14 eeeeeaaaasily.....the Wilson Pro Staff he used? barely better than wood.....with NO POWER AT ALL.......Pete went for the racquets with no power....because he wanted the control - accuracy........as he is the best SPOT SERVER ever....Federer is the second best spot server ever.....Ivanisevic is HISTROY'S BEST PURE SERVER.....and he HAD to be.......the rest of his game was almost as weak as Pat Cash's overall game......my volleys and forehand are better than his....lol But GOD that serve.

    I guess I can still appreciate McEnroe's skills. Yet the game has evolved so much and I've seen John lose so many times that his game seems antiquated. I respect John in the way that one respects history, his place in helping the game develop over and above his skills themselves. How much more is it with the likes of Borg and Laver! Pete's game, however, is still quite impressive - even by today's standards. Notwithstanding a rather shaky start.

    Superbrat was simply outclassed by Sampras who was playing at a leisure pace. But at least McEnroe won in one area...he has more hair then Sampras.

      first time was 9 years ago, and was a big deal to Mac...think he's gotten him since, although Pete hasn't been playing much and has been dealing with some back issues I think...Mac does keep himself in great shape
      CHAMPIONS CUP BOSTON
      The Boston Globe
      McEnroe finally beats Sampras
      Globe Staff / May 3, 2008
      The audience at Agganis Arena got what it expected in the first set of the feature match of the Champions Cup last night: Pete Sampras blew through John McEnroe quickly, his powerful serve-and-volley game putting most points out of McEnroe's reach.
      But the match began to veer off track, steered by the 49-year-old McEnroe's skills. Though he was overwhelmed in the first set, McEnroe hung around. He served and swerved and hit balls that curved to hammer out a win in the second set, then reared back and pounded the ball in the tiebreaker, serving five aces for a 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 victory.
      "That's what you gotta love about sports," said McEnroe, looking dazed. "Anything can happen."
      It was McEnroe's first victory over Sampras (they met three times on the ATP Tour, and have played several times in senior play and exhibitions), and the first loss in the Champions Cup for Sampras, who is playing his fourth tournament on the over-30 tour.
      "The first game, the pace of the ball was so phenomenal, I felt like I tweaked every muscle in my body," McEnroe said. "Not only is it a lot of pace, it's difficult to tell where it's going. So to react to that, can be dangerous, physically."
      McEnroe wasn't kidding. After winning a tough match against Jim Courier Thursday, he was a bit sore, a bit tired, a bit depleted. "I had a little bit of tightness from [beating] Courier," said McEnroe, who got an on-court treatment from the Tour's trainer after the third game of the second set.
      Sampras seemed to have a good grip on the match even as McEnroe tried to work the ball out to the lines and stretch Sampras. But trailing, 4-5, in the set, McEnroe served a love game: rescuing a cross-court shot to hit a forehand volley down the line, and forcing Sampras into two returns that sailed long. McEnroe broke Sampras in the next game, a double fault at game point underscoring Sampras's weakening power, and McEnroe's ability hit the lines.
      Sampras received on-court treatment, too, before the tiebreaker, for a sore back that he said he tweaked a few weeks ago playing basketball. But he couldn't work out the kinks in his game.
      In the tiebreaker, McEnroe fired five aces (Sampras had one), including two in a row for a 5-2 lead. Sampras rallied with a cross-court winner and a service winner to bring it to 5-4, but then McEnroe fired another ace. He looked as stunned as anyone. McEnroe closed the improbable match with a big serve, which Sampras drove long, giving McEnroe the tiebreak at 10-4, and the match.
      "Who would have thought I'd have five aces in the tiebreak, and he'd have one?" said McEnroe. "Now I can tell my kids I beat Pete Sampras once."
      ........
      funny on the insane Mac fan here, that Mac would call nuts...tennis fans

    Age notwithstanding ... Mac never matched well with Sampras. Pete's serve was too big and Pete always found a way to break Mac. End of story.

  • @keithmckeith
    @keithmckeith 8 лет назад +3

    Sampras is 12yrs macs junior here and good enough to be a pro still, and flat out beating Mac ....and To think that some young fanboys consider Mac to be 'not in the same class' given his vintage? Zero doubt, 1984 Mac would defeat Sampras from any phase in his career.

    • @Stratisfied22
      @Stratisfied22 8 лет назад +12

      Both men playing their best tennis Mcenroe has zero chance of winning. Sampras had the best serve of all time, huge forehand, better backhand and was quicker around the court. Sampras would simply over power him like he did everyone else he played in his era which was a much higher level than the early 80's.

      Yet mac has beaten Sampras on the senior tour being 12years older lol. You see, your statement doesn't make sense. The problem with the Sampras legacy is that he defeated complete mediocrity in most...10 or 11 of his slam wins. Sampras won his slams by defeating Cedric Pioline, Todd Martin, Goran Ivanisevic, Michael Chang, Carlos Moyà, Cedric Pioline again, Goran Ivanisivec again, Patric Rafter, Jim Courier. The only players of note that Sampras beat in GS finals were Agassi and Becker who was past his best. Sampras was thrashed in US open finals by second rate players such as Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin. Edberg also hammered Sampras. Don't tell me mac couldn't handle Sampras lol!!! Sampras wins 3-4 slams in Mac's era.

      I can appreciate your love for Mac he was great no doubt. But I'm a teaching pro of over 25 years and know a little about the game. All the above mentioned played at a higher level and were much better athletes. It's just a fact Keith. You're senior tour statement is ridiculous but i will say that Mac for his age is the best in the world currently. Who did Mac beat back then? Connors and Borg? Yes great players but there was not as much depth in the mens game back then. Getting to the finals of a grand slam was a lot easier back then for the top players. Petes record speaks for itself and i'm not even a big fan of his. He blew guys off the court and dominated for many years. Just for the record i'm a bigger Mac fan than Sampras.

      Mac had to beat Borg, Connors and Lendl to win his slams. Unfathomably superior in depth to Cedric pioline and Todd Martin, Michael Chang, Rafter, Moyà etc etc etc. partly due to this weak legacy, Sampras has become something of a forgotten champion in a very short space of time. Not Sampras' fault, but hey, he scored a lot of slams out of an otherwise dull and mediocre period in tennis.

      keithmckeith Pete's first major- Lendle, McEnroe, Agassi. He had thirteen majors, and you forget in those names you Cherry picked: Becker, Agassi, edberg, Ivanisavic, Rafter, to add to all those names, all sharing the same space around the same time, and guess what? He was number 1 six years straight won more wimbledons and Us opens against a thicker field than Mac. Name players not named Borg or Conners or Lendl during his best years. Also Pete was faster, stronger, a far better server, and out strike base liners.
