  • In this video I'll show you how to 'backdate the heat' in your Aircooled Porsche 911. Why should you backdate your heat?
    - Lose weight
    - More room in engine bay, easier to service
    - Looks better, cleans up visually
Originally, all Porsche 911s had heater setups like this, but at some point they decided they needed to add extra hoses and splitters and 12v blowers so that people can have better heat while idling in traffic. Given that most 911s are not sitting in traffic and used in cold/winter conditions anymore, it makes sense to clean up your engine, make more room for easier service, and lose some weight! I'll show you how to do it!

Great mod, I believe you are the only one who has made a walkthrough on this one.

Thanks! Yeah, it's confusing in the forums... seeing it in 3d helps a lot.

Hey someone else with a 5 blade fan!!! Hell ya, that makes us Pcar Eskimo brothers (IMO)!
I need to do this, kinda easy as all my hosing is missing from the previous owner (dad, and thanks dad).

@@ADDvanced Same here as far as being a hobbyist. I just got my first Pcar a few months ago. Mine is just a lowly 912E but same gen and gbody as yours. Although the engines are completely different , guys like you give me the confidence to wrench on my own car. Cheers!

You did a great job showing the issues with these backdates. And you are right - in fact, the heat kinda sucks in these air cooled 911's, no matter what. FWIW, my heat exchangers are gone and replaced with sport headers and a sport exhaust, for the same reason you're doing it - keeps it easier to work in the engine bay, and gives a few horses as a result. Thanks for showing us this - so much easier to visualize as a result. Hope you have a nice holiday season.

Thanks for the kind words! I still wanted heater boxes for defrost and being a targa, it's kind of fun to have the top off and still have heat to balance it out, so I have a B&B system going on with monster primaries.... will probably lose low end but over the years I'm hoping to grow into them. :)

Great videos, really appreciate them. I'm working through a similar project, very helpful to have some examples to follow and see how you solve some of the issues that you run into

Great to hear! I do these videos to inspire others to tackle big projects like this; any huge task is easy if you break it down into small enough steps. Cheers!

I would have modified the oil line for clearance. (Bend and or reshape) instead of beating the tin. Thats just me.....

Good job showing what you’ve done. But wouldn’t it have been better if you would have purchased an 11 bladed cooling fan.?

      Nah. 5 blades are cooler.

Worst idea ever to put silicone to seal the backdate duckt. It will be a pita to remove one day. That said I like your diy methot!! Congrats

It's just on the edge, not under it, so it isn't adhering it to the fan shroud, just preventing air from blowing out the gap. I would prefer to have to do none of this but these ducts fit like crap.

I know it and I approve.. I also have these backdate duct and for the price this is the worst fight ever!

Silicone wont last to vibration, heat, cold, humidity anyway, I see it peel around window a/c's often.
