Eddie is a walking encyclopaedia with a brilliant mind. For a 28 yr old he knows alot of history for his country. Thanks Spanian! Another hectic doco 🙌🏾
Thats actually normal for Greece, i moved to Germany when i was 20 and it was insane to me that the youth knew nothing about their politicians or laws, i guess all the hardships and corruption in Greece, has made the youth a lot more politically active
Sorry, to burst your bubble, but basic facts he was talking about were incorrect: the polytechnic insurrection happened in November '73, not 74. The outcome of which was the collapse of the Papadopoulos regime and its replacement by the more brutal and even crazier Ioannidis regime. The Ioannidis regime decided to support a coup in Cyprus the following year, which gave Turkey the excuse to invade the island. Following the invasion, the military junta collapsed in summer '74. So much for Eddie's brilliant mind...
@@stephanmavrakis6495 So what? He was sharing his own knowledge. He is not a professional historian. The whole point is to give a general idea of the history of the country. The average viewer won't remember the difference between '73 and '74 fo a small country in the Balkans. They will remember the feeling you get once you hear the history
no ... he exaggerate a lot ... In an attempt not to call me fascists ... A) the University strike didnt overthrown the Military Coup ... B) The Tank never step on student C) some urban legends are there... that generation ruined Greece after they took over politics etc ... But yes they were dead ppl ... there is not rapists there and many more to explain
The Serbian in Skopje says there isn't any Greek race and state and we came from Africa 200 years ago to steal "their" heritages? I think that they collaborate with turks easily to bring Islamofascists TERRORISTS I Balkans back...they're dangerous and fascists. Albania takes head and become dangerous for all people in Ainos peninsula with slavs that pretend the Macedonians (!)
Much love and respect from a fellow Albanian. I think about what we could accomplish if our countries cooperated and tried to compete in the wider European community. We are more alike than different. We should be friends and work together to bring freedom, opportunity, success to our people. We are not just neighbours, we are brothers....we just speak different languages. Long live the Balkan peninsula!

I am one of the "old-school" guys in Exarcheia back in the day. That was my rollercoaster trip watching the video: The guide initially gave me bad vibes. It's not uncommon random people showing off to play it cool and saying crap about Exarcheia without any experiences. Initially, some small inaccuracies on information and things he was not too aware were really throwing me off but towards the mid-end I was satisfied more or less that he was genuine. When he said that his grandfather started the special forces I was ready to flip off because my grandfather was the one that initiated the organization and training of the Greek special forces with the British ones. In 10 seconds he drops that he was the grandson of Tsigandes... the commander of my grandfather that worked very closely together in Midas 614 (an important resistance team during the nazi occupation), setting up the special forces, and attempting to democratize the military and the politics before the war. If you switched the conversation on the history of his grandfather (a true hero) it would last 3 hours of unbelievable stories that actually happened. Eddie if you see this, you feel like an old friend and I would love to hang out and check old stories when I come back to Greece. Feel free to pm me if interested.
@@arisv1183with us Greeks it’s not ‘six degrees of separation’ it’s more like two degrees! Every person you meet in Greece will ask you where you’re from and who are your people - guaranteed there’s some connection 😅
Just discovered your channel. Love your work. As soon as you said the guy you were meant to meet ditched you, I said, typical Greece. Then after you said a random guy on the streets recognised you, I said, typical Greece. Gotta love it. Eddy is great!
Exarcheia is a gentrified neighborhood full of expensive cafes, airbnb, etc the last 10 years or so, and so on, plus full of riot police 24/7 stationed there. It used to have a strong anarchist community (kind of antifa-lite types), but this has long came to pass. You can find a couple of squat places where they gather, listen to music, have some events, but that's mostly it.
No where near full knowledge of history. You can tell he is ignorant of history, if you know some yourself. The thing about exarcheia is, that is the remnant of greek "communists" (most arent really but promoting those ideas is a simple way for them to climb the political ladder with the hope in mind that one day they may end up as member of parliament or be handed a high paying job by the left parties) baptised as anarchists by their own communist and socialist parties, so the party itself doesnt get in trouble for vandalising and setting on fire private and state property. Everything you heard about the university rebellion for example is bollocks. What it really is, was that the communists students started a protest with the goal of it getting out of proposions and tragic event taking place, which eventually did happen, so that the coup regime resigns for being unable to manage the situation and prevent any bloodshed. They didnt manage to topple the military coup regime. What did, was the turks invading cyprus and in greece, both the coup regime and the immidient goverment afterwards being absolute incompetent taking preventing action against it, so both got overthrown in the span of months. That's the historical facts, he seemed to withhold cause it may suit his own agenda or simply being unaware of. Not really full of knowledge after all eeyy.
@@Volkswagen_taro-ferrari bro, there are not just communists in exarcheia. There are tons of other movements. I personally visited there often when I was a uni student, just for the Rock, (post)Punk and Metal communities.
@@Neueregel they’re all communists and socialists who live in a capitalist society because they are to gutless to live in a real communist or socialist country 😂 FUCK ANTIFA
@@Volkswagen_taro-ferrari I disagree only that to the point that Polytechnic riot of 1973 started with only communist and socialists. Everyone was tired of the dictatorship. And actually Greek Communist party was against it at the start. Actually it brought a tougher dictatorship of Ioannidis that led to Greek - Cypriot tragedy.
I'm less than half an hour in and posting a clarification to what Eddie said. The student uprising happened in Nov 1973. The dictators suppressed it violently but only outlasted it a few more months into 1974, the uprising effectively ended their legitimacy and reign. I was a pre-teen then living a few hundred meters away, spent my teenage years hanging out at Exarcheia (lots of resistance stories). Hours before the army tanks came my mom saved a college student from certain death by yelling at the cop from our balcony, who turned his gun toward us. Couple of days after it was over we had to clean up human insides splattered against our building's exterior. Listening to the Uni uprising's radio station the night of the 17th crying out at the army, "they are our brothers, they won't hurt us", is one of my saddest and most indelible memories.
The uprising definitely didn't end the regime's legitimacy. Also those "few more months" were almost an entire year, mid November 1973 to late July 1974. If the American backed Ioannides counter-coup hadn't succeeded, and we hadn't been coerced into an ill advised Cypriot conflict by the US there's no telling when the Junta would have ended, and under what circumstances. Pappadopoulos was liberalizing the regime, it would have probably ended with a peaceful transfer of power following national elections, kind of like it did in our timeline, save for the whole pressure following the disaster in Cyprus

29:54 This comment is probably gonna be buried in the sea of comments but Zack (Zackie) Kostopoulos wasn't a trans man but a drag queen. He was killed when a jewelry owner locked him up in his store because he accused him of stealing. He tried to escape by breaking the glass walls of the store but when he made a small hole he was beaten up by the owner & some policemen that came to the scene. He died because of the beating & his lungs rupturing from the glass. The tragic thing was that the bystanders didn't do anything & just watched him get beaten & bleed to death. This happened in 2018 in Omonoia.
that is horrible. RIP Zackie. i am very curious now after this video to know more about the drag and furthermore, the LGBT history of greece and its place in all this mess, especially in an extremely free thinking, artistic district like exarchia
Yet despite this the ideologically brainwashed anarcho terror cells spread around that he was "beaten for being gay" despite no evidence for it existing like how can some middle aged jewelers know a random guy that they found in their store is gay despite the guy not being famous or known in any way? This is just stupid "martyr chasing" ment to justify domestic terrorism that only hurts the common people its also disrespectful to the victim

Wow, I don’t know why this came up on my FYP…but having lived in Greece since 07 to 2018…..watching this just brings back so many memories and even informed me about things I never even knew happened politically. However, I do remember that street with all the drugs usage out in public became super bad with the influx of immigrants with the war in Syria back in ‘14.

I am one of the "old-school" guys in Exarcheia back in the day.
That was my rollercoaster trip watching the video:
The guide initially gave me bad vibes.

Exactly.. Showing a picture that no longer exists seems kind of ridiculous..
This should be the top comment.
They sold him a great story though. 😀
A lot of anarchists are crazy rich
I'm here now and it reminded me a lot of the rich white anarchist back home in America. The real ones know
The guide was unreal. He needs his on channel. Full of knowledge and history. Old and current.
@Volkswagen_taro-ferrari "his agenda".... please mate. 😂
Stop lying to people, this fairy tail never happened you guys are lying because you're lazy and can't accept reallity.
@@Ghost-Of-Hellas Follow your leader

So he FAFO. Noted.
He tried to steal a jewellery store while high and jumped through the glass window to escape
