As a professional diver I have worked under everything from an aircraft carrier to a trawler. We have our own way to secure safety for the diver but there are some amateurs out there who don't. Some of them get killed.
Some marinas bottoms become toxic because of the ablative paint that is released during cleaning. I've heard of marinas halting cleaning for periods of time. I think your point makes sense. I've never cleaned ships like the ones shown but if growth occurred in one part of the globe and then all that growth was deposited in another, I'm sure that couldn't be good.
Us seafarers call this as propeller polishing. This is done to reduce the drag of the ship and thereby save on expensive fuel consumption. Usually the propeller gets fouled if the ship stayed in port for too long or the antifouling unit of the vessel malfunctions or is not working.
@@srcastic8764 as per my experience, the vessel has to do propeller polishing and hull cleaning if both are fouled before sailing to Australia and NZ. Underway in both countries, the vessel will be asked about the condition of the hull and when was the last cleaning. If the hull was found to be heavily fouled at arrival, the vessel will be heavily fined and might not even be allowed to enter port and do cargo operation. The rest of the world don't care that much about invasive species in the hull but they do on the ballast water so we have what is called the balllast water treatment that kills and gets rid of any organism in the ballast water.
@@ndor1429 that’s pretty interesting. I know here in the US we have a big problem in certain fresh water lakes with certain species of invasive freshwater mussels spreading from lake to lake by clinging to boat motors and boat trailers. That’s why I figured scraping off prop growth might spread invasive species to new ports from wherever they had attached from, both plant and animal.
@@srcastic8764 there was a species of crab from China that has invaded the US waters through the ballast water and it demolished some fish species in the US. This case started the laws regarding ballast water exchange and ballast water treatment afterwards. Now, if the vessel goes to the US, samples of ballast water will be taken from the vessel and if they found some invasive organism or harmful bacteria, the vessel will be heavily fined and will not be allowed to discharge their ballast water in preparation for loading. The vessel will be required to leave the port and exchange ballast from a minimum of 200 miles from the US continental shelf.
@@ndor1429 good to know. We have many invasive species problems here in the US. The southeastern coast and now the entire Caribbean Sea is covered with the Lion Fish which is decimating the local reef life. Targeted spear fishing programs are controlling it in some areas, but it’s a true problem. Chinese carp, which escaped from carp farms during floods, not from ships, have taken over whole river and tributary systems, depleting entire areas of native fish. In Florida there are non-native snakes and other reptiles, which are mostly escapees from pet stores that were destroyed in a huge hurricane, that are breeding like crazy and having an impact on local birds and other wildlife. We just have a lot of problems from invasive species. It’s good they’re starting to try and stop some by checking ballast water at least. Thanks for the interesting info!!

That's totally and completely incorrect. Screw is just a nickname for a propeller. Sometimes aircraft propellers are called airscrews. Propellers were invented for ships long before aircraft even existed and the name was invented to refer to ship propellers.
