Video Description:
It's no secret that Jackson, Mississippi carries a reputation, often associated with its countless abandoned structures and alarmingly high crime statistics. When Jackson is brought up, it's rarely for positive reasons. But today, I'm on a different journey. While I've witnessed the ominous facade of Jackson, I'm determined to dig deeper, to engage with its residents, and share the untold stories that lie beneath the surface. So, join me on this exploration as we challenge preconceptions and perhaps uncover a side of Jackson that's often overlooked. Stick around, because there's much to discover, and you just might find yourself seeing this city in a new light.

JackTown Mississippi used to be the city to go to if you was from any rural small town in Mississippi I Love my state but I now live abroad in South Africa the best life choice I've ever made
Hello I am living in Jackson and thinking of retiring in SA in about 12 months. How has your experience been and in what cities do you recommend?
@jackjackson4412 I recommend Johannesburg and my experience has been awesome South Africa has that same vibe us Black folks got back in the southern states hospitality
@@SoUThCReATiOn thanks 💯
I plan on retiring to east Africa myself. I can't wait to get the hell out of America. I'm from Georgia by the way.
@@saonedixon5476 congratulations 🎉. Nairobi Kenya is still on my list of potential retirement places.
Integration is the reason many indigenous American communities went down hill. Funneled all of the money right out of the community, while dismantling the families and family values smh.

By far this is one of your best videos Chris, you highlighted both good and bad , I had a different opinion on Jackson bcuz of you. Thx

I’m born a raised there in Jxn and it saddens me to see Jxn in the condition that it’s in now cause that’s definitely not the place I was raised in 😢
i lived in Jackson i will never go back i don't even visit
Im from Boston Massachusetts but I lived in Jackson for around 4 years. I'm 30 now but I spent ages 23 - 27 there. Lots of stuff to be learned. Feel like every northerner needs to go experience South to learn something especially ones like me that are Mulatto (Mixed Black and white) i got called proper alot 😂. Lots of words that get thrown around lightly up north by people of all races dont fly down there. Lots more words get removed from your vocabulary when you learn their true origins, its truly humbling, and you always refer to someone as Ms. __ Or Mr. __
Feel like your guide did a good job of showing you some areas surrounding JSU. Funny how like massachusetts has harvard/MIT which are both right around the corner from the ghetto, JSU is right around the corner from the HOOD.. I was working a security job in a complex around the corner from JSU and one of the folks pulled a gun out on the complexs police officer that worked there / lived in there. The bus station downtown and the area near the Zoo get wild..
Fondren has some great food but its in close proximity to what some people would consider the "hood" too.
If you wanna see some more of the homeless population, a good area to look was i55 south/frontage road.. they literally live under the bridges and on the side, inside and under buildings! feel like you missed a big part of jackson by not getting on down there near the northside livingston road / lake forest estates aswell .. Woodrow Wilson's near that too... theres a cool rap group over there named the forestboyz haha dunno if they still going but they were the first ones to ever approach and greet me when i moved into lake forest estates with my big homie.
Its not a horrendous place to live in if you mind your business ill never forget my time spent in jackson ill tell you i learned alot. Best food ever.. Got in my first 2 fights in Jackson right on ridgewood road, worked at the hallmark there aswell! 😂 RIP to my big homie Dana Domino though.. i miss jackson ❤
I'm Italian from Medford.and lived in immediate Lowell area, came out as transgender and I went through MS,.Memphis I for sure, got all kinds of crime reminders but saw nothing happen.. went to and into N Mississippi plus a band I like is from Hernando County. It all was an eye opener. In MS I was in more of the white parts, Tupelo also. I didn't think it was too bad overall. Boston area though is definitely my roots. Have cousins in Somerville, Hyde Park too. Went to a lot of the south. In those areas I'm seen as a Weird Al sort of figure to blacks. The 1st thing they come up with is I look like Weird Al. Many black women liked my nails too. Most other places I've gone though like OK, MI, FL, I've had to segregate. Blacks imo have their most prominent culture in these places here. It tends to be worse other places like Atlanta, around Detroit suburbs, South FL etc. I gotta be with whites . SC its blended at least where blacks and whites go to the same stores even if they don't mix. Really depends on location that dictates what happens and who youre with.. OK whites and natives , I couldn't get down with black people over in Tulsa or OKC. Miami area, Cuban areas and white I found myself in. Speaking Spanish and high traffic was the only thing otherwise it be fine. Hialeah is sorta like a cuban Medford.
Now when I went to Los Angeles, Mexican cholas and cholos did try starting with me. There I actually found Compton to be an OK place considering and I was in the LBC I liked it there by SoCal standards. Cops stopped me with a 40 in my hand I for real felt like it was a sublime song. In Garden Grove also is where it happened. Went to LAX. No problems with black people there really, If there was, it was with an individual male who was hitting on me and getting in my space in a huge parking lot. Torrance. Huntington Beach I ran into the teen KKK it turns out and they were asking me all kinds of stupid questions. So yea I can even say I had en encounter with a sheetless faction of the kkk. Just teens in a car hiding their identity with a light. They were there for someone else and I happened to get in their cross hairs. Fun fact. Racism is the worst in The L.A area I am convinced and didn't see any of this in MS or Memphis or even SC. Just on craigslist maybe I was told to leave SC by one .
Now back home, people are racist too but it's different. I had Italians tell me I was Mexican and not one of them.but it turned out they got picked on too and had to pass something onto the new kid but was sorta their mentality too. My last name was called and they were convinced it wasn't Italian at all and it was Mexican no matter how many times I tried to tell em. In my father's friend circles they had nicknames for friends of theirs, one was mike the kike or something . Joe the Jap. Mine was Nacho among students at a tech school I went to but California imo is the worst racism. In the NE what people say to you won't really stop you from advancing . In L.A or parts or California it certainly does.
@Manginaclub I was told Italians are black so get over yourself 😮
@@anonymoustrucker1782get over yourself cause that was far from the truth goofy😵💫
glad u enjoyed your time there
@@Light_144 even the italians agree! Are you like the afro-latinas, who deny their heritage
I like the older guy, not blaming anyone very optimistic if people in Jackson are like him the future is bright
talking optimistic don't build cities. Cities are built with money and legislation. People in Jackson are poor as hell so nothing is 'finna' get built. The state legislators are White and republican so they ain't finna do shit for Jackson.
Wut.. he blamed the wyte man directly, because they chose to not live there anymore, he inadvertently blamed the state government for being a "red" state..
All I seen was a guy who was trying to deflects from reality.....
@@Liimpy If you knew how economics work you would understand what he saying. Most of the abandon homes belong to white people. Couple that with blocking government funds.
How refreshing to have the dude wearing the black "HEAL" T-shirt is very articulate seems intelligent and knows the history of Jackson, Mississippi...hopefully this guy beliefs in his are with numerous dilapidated buildings will improve.
I love my home town Mississippi you show respect you get respect

They are supposed to be spent on us... somehow, we got ourselves in the same situation our forefathers fought against. Back then, we fought against a king.. now we have an unseen elite entity taking our money. The whole system is corrupt.
It hurt me to see Jackson like this, as a youth I use I visited my grandmother in Madison, Ms which at that time it was all country but now Madison, Ms looks like a miniature Beverly Hills. I hung out at Jackson State University, attend Provine and Brinkley High School, I attended Powell Elementary and Hardy Middle school, my cousins lived down by Western Plaza, that for the people that really know Jackson from back in the day. I use to hang out at Jackson Mall then Jackson Mall was closed and converted into something else, the new mall was called Metro Center. Jackson has a lot of history that need to be preserved but change is required in Jackson and not a lot talk. Put up or shut up.. They need big investors to open business, plants that can employ a lot of people. I will ALWAYS have much love for Jackson, Ms.
I grew up in south Jackson and hung out at the Metrocenter and on McDowell Road. It saddens me what’s happened to our city. I live in Gluckstadt now.

To be FAIR and BALANCED! I want to give a BIG SHOUT OUT TO Jackson, Mississippi. Thank you POLO for the tour of Jackson. Im glad to see and know that the young black men and women who live in Jackson, Mississippi are doing POSITIVE, CONSTRUCTIVE and GOOD THINGS. In my opinion! Most people who live in the HOOD or poor low income area‘s are HARD WORKING and DECENT PEOPLE.

What an amazing guy with the heal shirt.
He's so positive and ready to become better
I'd be ashamed to show that city; it's dystopian depressing. It's a travesty run by Democrats. You should see small Ontario towns that will look very similar thanks to Trudeau.
So when integration happened, the black businesses suffered. How ironic? Perhaps segregation wasn't a bad thing? Just asking.
Sounded like a segregationalist to me
Soooo we couldn’t show North Jackson. This disappointed me very bad. You have Fondren, but had to show the “hood” to put the icing on the cake with the tittle of the video. Smh!!!
The fact that the young brother couldn’t explain Freedom Corner and who Medgar Evers was just made me stop and think for a minute
We had just rode past a street where a gun shot went off had to get my thoughts together sir lol

As a Jacksonian, like anywhere in this country, you have your good parts and your not so good parts! I'm not originally from Jackson, MS, I'm a transplant from college Jackson State University, THEE, and I decided to stay here after college. It's sad that you chose to start this video with total foolishness. I've never heard of this guy, seen this guy, Twerk king, what!? We're NOT all living that way here. SMH. 💯🎯‼️
85% ppl of colour...why is Jackson, Mississippi so poor, why not band together be productive build your city stop waiting for the "MAN"
I really really appreciate you & your family for sacrificing your time for us to view thank you 🙏
Chris, growing up around poverty and abandoned buildings can build a lot of character and instill a lot of motivation in a kid also. These conditions can build exceptionally motivated and disciplined people 💯💡
Thank you for video. Haven't been there for years and world should know what it is like now Congratulations on your 250,000 milestone. Next one will arrive real soon I'm quite sure. 😊 👍
It’s been awhile Chris, very important information about Jackson Mississippi.
18:16... He spoke some real words about how outsiders travel to cities just to film its dilapidation, and ignore the clean cut quality, those cities has to offer....
Look at how the government treats its Black citizens and its Black municipalities and you’ll understand why it looks the way it does. Let’s not act like we don’t understand what is happening and why.
2 live crew(uncle Luke) def had a part of twerking
But if you know NO has had bounce for a very long time and wasn’t getting the spotlight it should have like Miami was getting In late 80’s
Nah, I grew up in that era. They were popping back then.

This is not a full representation of Jackson. And they obviously are not from Jackson. He doesn’t know his hoods. I didn’t see all of it, but the areas I saw were not Shady Oaks.
Yes they were hired actors, nothing is real.

They have some annoying auras and attitudes …act just like how it looks out there !
He was not a good person to represent Jackson. He don’t know to much info. He should have kept the other man.
That’s just his point of view, he absolutely not means that his words are sacred. His words are not sacred and he is just a human being.
250 monthly for a house 🏠 thats because their is no business places to work so if they don't lower the rent then Jacksonville will be a Ghost town 😮

I saw Bobby Rush in concert. He's both hilarious and entertaining. He's so interactive with the audience. And a fantastic harmonica player who is still getting it at 90 years old.
Living in Byram, MS and don't believe the news or media. It has its problems but we don't have tents everywhere, panhandling on every corner, zombies walking around, etc.... Community is still alive and well here. People of every color get along here for the most part. Govt is screwing US not the PEOPLE. I ❤ MISSISSIPPI and Jackson will be great again🫶
Chris, you are bringing to light the real issues. You can see similar, lots of abandoned buildings on South Boulevard, and also a lot of areas in the 36108 zipcode, Montgomery Alabama
@35:25 Tony what a beautiful soul and voice ❤💗🖤🤍 amen to your words x
Yes and he was not tempted by the devil. He spoke scriptures and chris didnt want nothin to do with it. Then described him as very religious when he said no im not religious im a Child of God
There are nightclubs but not so many retail businesses in downtown. There are State buildings no fast-food etc. Sears used to be in Jackson. We had two Malls in Jackson. Now they are gone.😢

Girl I work with sees people shooting every night on the corner outside her house. They don’t clean it up, don’t fix the tore up streets, and the water is a mess. Go five minutes away to Brandon, Flowood, etc nd totally different.
When I moved down here and asked people what they have to do to improve, the answer was 100% replace city council and mayor. Plus the police do nothing.
👍. I have been to Jackson! I met some cool O.G.'s! We are a lot of Walmart Chicken! Almost every day.

Growing up i lived in Pearl. Jackson use to be the spot. We use to go every weekend to the baseball game. Jackson Generals. All the white people moved out. North Park had the best mall and shops. Everything moved out
I used to spend summers in Jackson during the 80's. I would go to Callaway high school to lift weights and had much fun. So different now. But so is Meridian (where I was raised) and Chicago too (where I was born). My grandparents lived on 64th St. Lawrence and it was nice in the 70's. As they say, nothing stays the same. I do miss the good ol' days. Go to Meridian and see what's up there.
@23:20 it reminds me of the stories my grandmother told about Mississippi, about north carolina slaves that acted up. They were sent to Mississippi to be hunted like deer! True story. In the mid 20th century, some blacks ran away from a plantation only to find out, they’d been freed 60 years ago… One love.
Have you heard about the Mississippi mud
Beer or Pie? He doesn't drink beer, but the pie seems amazing
I like the fact that you found a few people to give the history and context regarding the city. I appreciate the gentlemen who gave you the Black History of that district that has the marker to prove that it once thrived and was vibrant and all Black. To speak the truth, just about every Black poor community within a state; i can almost assure you that (white)people in power have taken the money and not applied it equally to keep the city operational and properly funded, being that they have always been in office, so what happened to the money? So don't think people of color just want to live this way, because every time we try to live righteously and prosperously SOMEONE or SOME people come in and ....its taken away.
I by chance came across this story and as I figured, we(people in the black communities would be questioned) and we along the Black Belt would be exploited due to the segregated riches of our region. It breaks my heart when people come into our communities and ask all these ignorant(lack of knowledge) questions of how we live or survive. I give you props for wanting to understand our culture-if that is your purpose. If you want to tell a story, tell the true story that we've been taken, disabled and refused since we've been here. Tell the real truth of our origins and how we black people came to be here and the struggle to survive ever since. Then you may understand. But before you come....understand our culture and our ways before you ask questions.
I'm finna...
Very lit...
Wow, I'm really happy 'cause I got it. I mean, I understood almost everything they said. 7 years studying a lot has been paying off. Of course, I still have a long way to go...
