    Video Description:
It's no secret that Jackson, Mississippi carries a reputation, often associated with its countless abandoned structures and alarmingly high crime statistics. When Jackson is brought up, it's rarely for positive reasons. But today, I'm on a different journey. While I've witnessed the ominous facade of Jackson, I'm determined to dig deeper, to engage with its residents, and share the untold stories that lie beneath the surface. So, join me on this exploration as we challenge preconceptions and perhaps uncover a side of Jackson that's often overlooked. Stick around, because there's much to discover, and you just might find yourself seeing this city in a new light.

Im from Boston Massachusetts but I lived in Jackson for around 4 years. I'm 30 now but I spent ages 23 - 27 there. Lots of stuff to be learned. Feel like every northerner needs to go experience South to learn something especially ones like me that are Mulatto (Mixed Black and white) i got called proper alot 😂. Lots of words that get thrown around lightly up north by people of all races dont fly down there. Lots more words get removed from your vocabulary when you learn their true origins, its truly humbling, and you always refer to someone as Ms. __ Or Mr. __
Feel like your guide did a good job of showing you some areas surrounding JSU. Funny how like massachusetts has harvard/MIT which are both right around the corner from the ghetto, JSU is right around the corner from the HOOD.. I was working a security job in a complex around the corner from JSU and one of the folks pulled a gun out on the complexs police officer that worked there / lived in there. The bus station downtown and the area near the Zoo get wild..
Fondren has some great food but its in close proximity to what some people would consider the "hood" too.
If you wanna see some more of the homeless population, a good area to look was i55 south/frontage road.. they literally live under the bridges and on the side, inside and under buildings! feel like you missed a big part of jackson by not getting on down there near the northside livingston road / lake forest estates aswell .. Woodrow Wilson's near that too... theres a cool rap group over there named the forestboyz haha dunno if they still going but they were the first ones to ever approach and greet me when i moved into lake forest estates with my big homie.
Its not a horrendous place to live in if you mind your business ill never forget my time spent in jackson ill tell you i learned alot. Best food ever.. Got in my first 2 fights in Jackson right on ridgewood road, worked at the hallmark there aswell! 😂 RIP to my big homie Dana Domino though.. i miss jackson ❤

I'm Italian from Medford.and lived in immediate Lowell area, came out as transgender and I went through MS,.Memphis I for sure, got all kinds of crime reminders but saw nothing happen.. went to and into N Mississippi plus a band I like is from Hernando County. It all was an eye opener. In MS I was in more of the white parts, Tupelo also. I didn't think it was too bad overall. Boston area though is definitely my roots. Have cousins in Somerville, Hyde Park too. Went to a lot of the south. In those areas I'm seen as a Weird Al sort of figure to blacks. The 1st thing they come up with is I look like Weird Al. Many black women liked my nails too. Most other places I've gone though like OK, MI, FL, I've had to segregate. Blacks imo have their most prominent culture in these places here. It tends to be worse other places like Atlanta, around Detroit suburbs, South FL etc. I gotta be with whites . SC its blended at least where blacks and whites go to the same stores even if they don't mix. Really depends on location that dictates what happens and who youre with.. OK whites and natives , I couldn't get down with black people over in Tulsa or OKC. Miami area, Cuban areas and white I found myself in. Speaking Spanish and high traffic was the only thing otherwise it be fine. Hialeah is sorta like a cuban Medford.
Now when I went to Los Angeles, Mexican cholas and cholos did try starting with me. There I actually found Compton to be an OK place considering and I was in the LBC I liked it there by SoCal standards. Cops stopped me with a 40 in my hand I for real felt like it was a sublime song. In Garden Grove also is where it happened. Went to LAX. No problems with black people there really, If there was, it was with an individual male who was hitting on me and getting in my space in a huge parking lot. Torrance. Huntington Beach I ran into the teen KKK it turns out and they were asking me all kinds of stupid questions. So yea I can even say I had en encounter with a sheetless faction of the kkk. Just teens in a car hiding their identity with a light. They were there for someone else and I happened to get in their cross hairs. Fun fact. Racism is the worst in The L.A area I am convinced and didn't see any of this in MS or Memphis or even SC. Just on craigslist maybe I was told to leave SC by one .
Now back home, people are racist too but it's different. I had Italians tell me I was Mexican and not one of them.but it turned out they got picked on too and had to pass something onto the new kid but was sorta their mentality too. My last name was called and they were convinced it wasn't Italian at all and it was Mexican no matter how many times I tried to tell em. In my father's friend circles they had nicknames for friends of theirs, one was mike the kike or something . Joe the Jap. Mine was Nacho among students at a tech school I went to but California imo is the worst racism. In the NE what people say to you won't really stop you from advancing . In L.A or parts or California it certainly does.

It hurt me to see Jackson like this, as a youth I use I visited my grandmother in Madison, Ms which at that time it was all country but now Madison, Ms looks like a miniature Beverly Hills. I hung out at Jackson State University, attend Provine and Brinkley High School, I attended Powell Elementary and Hardy Middle school, my cousins lived down by Western Plaza, that for the people that really know Jackson from back in the day. I use to hang out at Jackson Mall then Jackson Mall was closed and converted into something else, the new mall was called Metro Center. Jackson has a lot of history that need to be preserved but change is required in Jackson and not a lot talk. Put up or shut up.. They need big investors to open business, plants that can employ a lot of people. I will ALWAYS have much love for Jackson, Ms.

Look at how the government treats its Black citizens and its Black municipalities and you’ll understand why it looks the way it does. Let’s not act like we don’t understand what is happening and why.

Remember when I peddle tomatoes and peaches from the Farmers Market off of Woodrow Wilson Street around 12 or 13 years old. Been to a lot of places while in the military. But JTown will always be home.

Community is still alive and well here. People of every color get along here for the most part. Govt is screwing US not the PEOPLE. I ❤ MISSISSIPPI and Jackson will be great again🫶

Girl I work with sees people shooting every night on the corner outside her house. They don’t clean it up, don’t fix the tore up streets, and the water is a mess. Go five minutes away to Brandon, Flowood, etc nd totally different.
When I moved down here and asked people what they have to do to improve, the answer was 100% replace city council and mayor. Plus the police do nothing.

I used to spend summers in Jackson during the 80's. I would go to Callaway high school to lift weights and had much fun. So different now. But so is Meridian (where I was raised) and Chicago too (where I was born). My grandparents lived on 64th St. Lawrence and it was nice in the 70's. As they say, nothing stays the same. I do miss the good ol' days. Go to Meridian and see what's up there.

@23:20 it reminds me of the stories my grandmother told about Mississippi, about north carolina slaves that acted up. They were sent to Mississippi to be hunted like deer! True story. In the mid 20th century, some blacks ran away from a plantation only to find out, they’d been freed 60 years ago… One love.

I like the fact that you found a few people to give the history and context regarding the city. I appreciate the gentlemen who gave you the Black History of that district that has the marker to prove that it once thrived and was vibrant and all Black. To speak the truth, just about every Black poor community within a state; i can almost assure you that (white)people in power have taken the money and not applied it equally to keep the city operational and properly funded, being that they have always been in office, so what happened to the money? So don't think people of color just want to live this way, because every time we try to live righteously and prosperously SOMEONE or SOME people come in and ....its taken away.
I by chance came across this story and as I figured, we(people in the black communities would be questioned) and we along the Black Belt would be exploited due to the segregated riches of our region. It breaks my heart when people come into our communities and ask all these ignorant(lack of knowledge) questions of how we live or survive. I give you props for wanting to understand our culture-if that is your purpose. If you want to tell a story, tell the true story that we've been taken, disabled and refused since we've been here. Tell the real truth of our origins and how we black people came to be here and the struggle to survive ever since. Then you may understand. But before you come....understand our culture and our ways before you ask questions.
