See the video sub titles for full details but when I first heard the new Duffy track .. Distant Dreamer it reminded me of McAlmont and Butler songs , not quite so strange when her Song Writer , Producer , guitarist and all round musical guru is Bernard Butler .
I wondered what this would have sounded like if it had been written for McAlmont instead who is also an amazing singer who just sounded so right with Butlers "wall of sound" type of production and sixties style of songwriting.
So... I removed the middle mix and dropped it down 3 semitones and a little more , cleaned up the remaining backing track as best as I could then dropped that down the same amount keeping as much as possible without distorting too much the tempo and beat.
I had to add a bit of flanging to keep from getting too scratchy but when I reinserted the altered vocal the results were spooky , it could almost be Mc Almont himself .
Just a bit of fun hope you enjoyed it I had a lot of fun messing with it , its a great song as always from Bernard Butler and Duffy

This song describes my life now. I have passed a lot of things. I diagnosed with ramsey hunt, after that my wife got pregnant and she lost our baby with an spontaneous abortion. That baby now is my distant star when I lost him the part of the song: "I hold on to a distant star" remembers me my baby because he was my force to pass this illness. even if I lost him I will remember him for ever. now he is my baby star. now When I see the sky and look at the stars I know he will be there
To me "Distant Dreamer" is the strongest track on Duffy's album. Why that wasn't released as a single I don't know. It's a sure-fire hit. I love McAlmonts voice.
Thankfully the song got recognized as a hood classic, thanks to Jojo.
Not sure which version is better, but IMHO they are both brilliant. Just enjoy them both Folks..Its a stunning and emotional track with fantastic build up and the sound is amazing.....
Boy I wish this was McAlmont in that I wish he was still singing with Bernard Butler. What a shame they didn't do more work together. 'Yes' is one of the best recordings of the 90's. Thanks so much for posting this.

It is no secret. this was always a McAlmont and Butler song. Now Duffy sings it with Butler. mcalmont is also, yes also involved with duffy.They were good, so is she.

both , it was written by Bernard for and with Duffy probably but may have even been written for McAlmont , I think its clear though that McAlmont has had a big impact on the way Duffy sings too . please dont leave loads of the same message I had to delete 20 of the same message or accept all : )

Its a bit difficult to keep all the quality and song length and temp AND then altering it to the voice of a singer that wasnt even there when it was professionaly recorded LOL , but perhaps I will try it with another song .
This is very good. I love Duffy's song, but I think I prefer your version to hers.
McAlmont is not mentioned in the Distant dreamer track, but has in Rockferry and Serious. I am beginning to believe the conspiracy :) I love this version of a track so much I hope you' re right :)

To others read the info. To catcha What did you use to manipulate the mix. What ever it is you have done a very effective job. Alluding to comments about Alicia Keys being innovative, plllease from the singles I have heard of AK, she is a total plagiarist, think Black Eyed Peas where is the love and you think of her treatment of the same song but under another name, can't think of the name she used for it, but it was piano based, how did she get away with that?

That is actually better than original Duffy song! I love her singing but Distant Dreamer is not within my favorits.
